One of the objectives of any task design is to provide a safe and helpful workplace for the employees. The safety and health module may include means for confronting the design with safety and health regulations and standards as well as tools for obstacles and collisions detection (such as error models and simulators), Virtual Reality is a leading edge technology which has only very recently become available on platforms and at prices accessible to the majority of simulation engineers. The design of an automated manufacturing system is a complicated, multidisciplinary task that requires involvement of several specialists. In this paper, a design procedure that facilitates the safety and ergonomic considerations of an automated manufacturing system are described. The procedure consists of the following major steps. Data collection and analysis of the data, creation of a three-dimensional simulation model of the work environment, simulation for safety analysis and risk assessment, development of safety solutions, selection of the preferred solutions, implementation of the selected solutions, reporting, and training. When improving the safety of an existing system the three-dimensional simulation model helps the designer to perceive the work from operators point of view objectively and safely without the exposure to hazards of the actual system.

High injury and fatality rates remain a serious problem in the construction industry. Many construction injuries and fatalities can be prevented if workers can recognize potential hazards and take actions in time. Many efforts have been devoted in improving workers' ability of hazard recognition through various safety training and education methods. However, a reliable approach for evaluating this ability is missing. Previous studies in the field of human behavior and phycology indicate that the visual focus of attention (VFOA) is a good indicator of worker's actual focus. Towards this direction, this study introduces an automated approach for estimating the VFOA of equipment operators using a head orientation-based VFOA estimation method. The proposed method is validated in a virtual reality scenario using an immersive head mounted display. Results show that the proposed method can effectively estimate the VFOA of test subjects in different test scenarios. The findings in this study broaden the knowledge of detecting the visual focus and distraction of construction workers, and envision the future work in improving work's ability of hazard recognition.
VR (Virtual reality) technologies have given engineers the ability to design, test, and evaluate engineering systems in a virtual environment. The virtual plant is the highlight of the application of the VR technology to plant engineering. Plant design, maintenance, control, management, operation are integrated in the virtual plant. The VR monitoring system including the concept of the virtual plant is developed to replace a current control room that has number of gages and warning lamps in two-dimensional panels which shows the operating status of a plant. The operating status of the plant is displayed in the VR monitoring system through the realistic computer graphics. Sophisticated, realistic and prompt control becomes possible. The VR monitoring system consists of advanced visualization, walk-through simulation and navigation. In the virtual environment, a user can navigate and interact with each component of a plant. In addition, the user can access the information by just clicking interesting component. The VR monitoring system is operated with various modules, such as (1) virtual plant constructed with Graphic Management System (GMS), (2) Touch & Tell System, and (3) Equipment DB System of Part. In order to confirm the usefulness of the VR monitoring system, a pilot gas plant which is currently being used for plant operator training is taken as application. The end of the paper gives an outlook on the future work and a brief conclusion.
Training is one of the representative application fields of virtual reality technology where users can have virtual experience in a training task and working environment. Widely used in the medical and military fields, virtual-reality-based training systems are also useful in industrial fields, such as the aerospace industry, since they show superiority over real training environments in terms of accessibility, safety, and cost. The shipbuilding industry is known as a labor-intensive industry that demands a lot of skilled workers. In particular, painting jobs in the shipbuilding industry require a continuous supplement of human resources since many workers leave due to the poor working environment. In this paper, the authors present a virtual-reality-based training system for spray painting tasks in the shipbuilding industry. The design issues and implementation details of the training system are described, and also its advantages and shortcomings are discussed based on use cases in actual work fields.
With the advancement of virtual reality technology, virtual reality contents and devices are being competitively released. This research deals with an early stage adoption model of a motion-sensing input device which enhances the user experience of these virtual reality contents and devices. In contrast to the previous research on the adoption or resistance of innovative products, this work compares and analyzes the antecedents in MIR(Model of Innovation Resistance) of resistance-perspective as well as those in UTAUT2(Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology) and IDT(Innovation Diffusion Theory) of adoption-perspective, and suggests a resistance-incorporated adoption model from a new viewpoint. The analysis of questionnaire data indicates the following results: Performance expectancy, effort expectancy, price value, hedonic motivation in UTAUT2 and visibility in IDT have a significant negative influence on innovation resistance. Compatibility in IDT and MIR exerts a positive influence on perceived value. Social influence and hedonic motivation in UTAUT2 positively relates to perceived value. Higher innovation resistance results in lower perceived value, with innovation resistance and perceived value negatively and positively affecting intention to use, respectively.
Direct volume rendering (DVR) is a commonly used method to visualize inner structures in 3D volumetric datasets. However, conventional volume rendering on a 2D display lacks depth perception due to dimensionality reduction caused by ray casting. In this work, we investigate how emerging Virtual Reality (VR) can improve the usability of direct volume rendering. We developed real-time high-resolution DVR system in virtual reality, and measures the usefulness of volume rendering with improved depth perception via a user study conducted by 38 participants. The result indicates that virtual reality significantly improves the usability of DVR by allowing better depth perception.

Along with a variety of coding education, physical computing education for controlling various sensors is being actively conducted for elementary, middle, and high school students in line with the era of the fourth industrial revolution. A problem with physical computing education using Arduino is pin connection errors between Arduino and various sensors. Most of the students who come into contact with the Arduino for the first time often do not know the purpose of the Arduino pin and the connection position of the pin. Also, hardware built with incorrect pin connections to the Arduino board often does not work properly. If this case continues, students will lose interest in coding education. Therefore, in this paper, we implemented an augmented reality application that informs the connection process of the Arduino board and the sensor during physical computing coding education using Arduino, and designed and implemented educational content for the Arduino pin position and connection process. First, we explain the role of the Arduino board and the sensor and the location of the pins. After that, the students run the educational augmented reality educational content using their smartphones and check the correct pin connection process between the Arduino and the sensor. In the physical computing education, augmented reality content is used to increase the understanding and immersion of the class. It is expected that the educational effect will also increase by inducing fun and interest in physical computing coding education.

This study examined the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses. The participants of this research were 7 registered nurses who are on the expanding stage of their family life cycle. Data were collected by individual in-depth interviews from June 10 to November 30, 2015 and analyzed using phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi (1978). The results showed that the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses may be categorized into 4 categories, 'the reality of work and parenting', 'external and internal conflicts about the compatibility of work and parenting', 'compromise with reality for solving the difficulty of compatibility', 'growing desire and efforts for compatibility', and may be identified with 12 theme clusters and 29 themes. The worthiness as a professional woman and happiness in child rearing are the driving force of the compatibility of work and family in married nurses. Therefore, the continued support of government policies and family is important for married nurses to maintain work and family balance.

Recently as AR(Augmented Reality) is focus of attention, AR is applied to various fields and is expected its valuable use. In this paper, we suggested the method to combine existing e_Book with augmented reality technology based on mobile equipment. We ascertained that augmented reality contents implemented on PC work well in pITX embedded lines (CPU Intel ATOM Z530) and we implemented augmented reality using marker in e_ Book in pITX embedded lines through these experiments. As the result of it, we could show the contents at the same time which had difficulty to be expressed on e_Book before. Also the existing augmented reality contents could be used as it is. Finally we expected that the user could interact with virtual contents or services directly and intuitively in the real world.

Development of 5th generation mobile telecommunication technology is visualizing ideal hyper-connected social information and communication technology (ICT). In particular, virtual reality (VR) technology is at the starting point for new expansion and leaps. This work defines virtual reality as media in this context and collects and analyzes discourse on its scalability around space and communication theory. We first elaborated the concept, starting with the early discussions of the virtual reality concept in 1990, and discussed the relationship between the physical world and digital information, expression and interaction immersion as a medium, simulation, art creation theory, and finally evolutionary development. In conclusion, beyond the discourse on the technology of virtual reality, academic subjects were required to have theoretical frameworks on cognitive science, neuroscience, social science, and humanities issues (ethics, personality, etc.) for the development and evolution of virtual reality. In other words, it is time for the evolution of virtual reality to be discussed, which can be moved beyond.
