Shift Work and Health: Current Problems and Preventive Actions

  • The paper gives an overview of the problems to be tackled nowadays by occupational health with regards to shift work as well as the main guidelines at organizational and medical levels on how to protect workers' health and well-being. Working time organization is becoming a key factor on account of new technologies, market globalization, economic competition, and extension of social services to general populations, all of which involve more and more people in continuous assistance and control of work processes over the 24 hours in a day. The large increase of epidemiological and clinical studies on this issue document the severity of this risk factor on human health and well being, at both social and psychophysical levels, starting from a disruption of biological circadian rhythms and sleep/wake cycle and ending in several psychosomatic troubles and disorders, likely also including cancer, and extending to impairment of performance efficiency as well as family and social life. Appropriate interventions on the organization of shift schedules according to ergonomic criteria and careful health surveillance and social support for shift workers are important preventive and corrective measures that allow people to keep working without significant health impairment.

  • The work patterns in the organizations performing research and development projects consist of both administrative business with defined processes and knowledge-oriented research and development business with undefined or semidefined processes. This paper describes an enterprise portal model and its services aligned to research and development organization's work patterns. The proposed portal model is focused on constructing personalized workplaces providing knowledge-based services for research and development business, as well as business process management based services for administrative business. The further research will provide more concrete portal model and its applicability to research and development organization's business.

The Relationship Between Perception of the Meaning of Work and Turnover Intention: Moderating Effect of Work-Family Facilitation (일에 대한 의미 인식과 이직의도 간의 관계: 일-가정 촉진의 조절효과)

  • This study demonstrated the relationship between members' perception of meaning of work and turnover intention and analyzed the moderating effect of work-family promotion efforts. To this end, data were obtained through a survey of 143 SME workers in Busan, and the results were used for analysis. As a result of the study, first, it was possible to confirm a negative (-) relationship with turnover intention when members in the organization positively perceived the meaning and value of their work. In addition, it was confirmed that efforts to promote work-family within the organization showed a moderating effect in this process. Based on these results, the following implications were derived. First, SMEs operate somewhat insufficient treatment and welfare systems compared to large companies, so they should pay more attention to the design and operation of various personnel systems so that they can recognize the organization's growth potential and technical advantage and meaning of work. In particular, in the case of rapidly growing SMEs, institutional support for work-family promotion may be insufficient, and the importance of introducing and operating a system to further revitalize it was suggested.

A Study on the labor organization for the Andong-Po(hemp cloth) (안동포 생산에 따른 길쌈노동교환직)

  • This article is concentrated on the organization for labor exchange in producing hemp cloth at Geumso-ri, Imha-myoun, Andong city. The organization is called "Sam-dool-ge", and it is different from the organization for labor exchange in producing rice because it is managed by women mostly. ln harvesting hemp, same amount of labor and expenses are invested. Especially, labor is supplied in equal condition. In spinning hemp cloth, the work is shared on the basis of same tech level. In threading the warp and fastening hemp cloth. the work conducted collaborately under the best engineer's direction. "Sam-dool-ge", a gil-sam labor exchange, also presents cultural creativity which produces and inherits the folkloric tradition, and also has the quality as a rite of passage. Nowadays, producing hem cloth is for pursuiting of profits than for making clothes as it used to be. This tradition will be lasted at least for a while because some young generations are beginning to participate in and old generation is teaching them good.

  • Job and organization analysis of producing institutes is a task that identifies the history of transition and major business functions for various record-producing institutions and must be performed in common within the archives, and many workers must jointly refer to the relevant knowledge. However, in the field, a limited number of people in charge are individually performing by manual work, and the results are not shared. Therefore, this study aims to reduce the work burden of workers through the automation of the job and organization analysis process and build basic resources that can be commonly used by the archives. This study subdivided the task of job and organization analysis into manual, semi-automation, and automation parts by performing FGI with the practitioner of the archive and suggested ways to realize it. In addition, we derive the basic analysis data that can be commonly referenced in the electronic records management process, and by verifying the results through practitioners, efficient use of knowledge resources is suggested. Furthermore, by establishing a standardized work process, we intend to lay the foundation to support consistent and systematic work performance.

Effects of Job Burnout on Organization Commitment and Organizational Citizen Behavior: A Moderating Effect of Family-Supportive Organization Perception (직무 소진이 조직몰입과 조직시민행동에 미치는 영향: 가족친화 조직인식의 조절 효과를 중심으로)

  • Objectives: Work-Family Balance (WFB) is a significant social issue in Korea. We examined the effects of employees' burnout on organizational performances by determining the moderating effect of family-friendly organizational culture in firefighter's organization. Methods: To test the hypothesis, data were collected from firefighters who are working at five fire stations in Deajeon and Chungnam province. Based on quantitative survey from 489 respondents, hierarchical regression analyses were performed. Results: The analysis revealed that job burnout had a negative effect on both organizational commitment (OC) and organizational citizen behavior (OCB). Family-Supportive Organization Perception (FSOP) negatively moderated the relationship between burnout and OCB. On the other hand, there was no significant moderating effect of FSOP on the relationship between burnout and OC. Conclusions: This study raises the importance of creating an organizational culture that gives its members a belief that the organization guarantees and supports the work-family balance system.

  • The article considers current information technologies in the organization of educational work in secondary schools in Great Britain. The forms and types of organization of educational work in secondary schools of Great Britain with the help of modern information technologies are covered. The purposes of education with the help of modern information technologies are singled out. Mental, physical, labor, moral, aesthetic and other types of education, merged in a holistic educational process, provide an opportunity to achieve the main goal - the formation of a comprehensive and harmoniously developed personality. All forms of educational work have their pedagogical significance, and each of them is valuable in the process of education. Democratization and partnership development are the leading principles of education in British schools at the present stage; multiculturalism and student independence. This is the ability to promote the role of different types of education, such as: labor, moral, legal, religious, family, environmental, aesthetic, civic, physical, mental education, which is now possible with the help of current information technology.   • As the supervision in site is integrated into construction management, the organization's work is expanded, and the perspective and goals of the work have changed, so there is a high possibility that the conflict situation within the organization will increase. Organization conflict increase a job stress of workers, so it acts as a negative factor in deriving organizational performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between organization conflict and job stress of construction manager in construction site. As a result of the study, the organization conflict of the construction manager was generally low, and the job stress was also less than that of other area's workers. In addition, correlation analysis revealed that organization conflict and job stress were related. The results of this study may help to improve the organization structure in the construction management site organization.

A Study on the Duration of Expertise of Fire Fighters' Work (소방공무원의 업무숙달기간에 관한 연구)

  • In order to choose work system of fire organization between specialization system and multi- tasking system, fire organization's works should be analyzed. The most important thing of this task is evaluation of speciality of work that can be performed by estimating the duration of expertise of fire fighters' work. In this study I estimated the duration by survey. The duration is 12 years and 5 months which is a year and 9 months after promotion to fire senior sergeant lank in the case of average fire fighter.

Current status of working environment monitoring the designated organization's laboratory and factors affecting reliability of the analysis results (작업환경측정 지정기관의 분석실 현황 및 분석결과의 신뢰성에 영향을 주는 요인)

  • Objectives: This study investigated to the analytical work environment, analyst's expert and status of analytical instrument in the designated organization's laboratory for measuring work environment, and carried out to ensure reliability of analytical results. Methods: This study was conducted by 114 analysts who work in designated organization's laboratory for measuring work environment. Information on the working environment and personal characteristics of the analysts were collected using a self-reported questionnaire and were analyzed using the SPSS program through analysis of frequency and t-test. Results: The speciality of subjects was occupational health(57.0%), environmental health(38.6%) and environmental engineering(4.4%), and they had a higher level of academic ability than workers in other industries. Analysts had to handle a large number of sample analysis and many tasks other than analytical work. The analysts answered that it was difficult to analyze organic substances than inorganic substances, and the difficult parts were the analytical methods setting of new substances(55.3%), instrument analysis(24.6%) and principle of analysis(23.7%). Analytical instruments mainly have legally required instruments. The difficulty of the analysis is solved from the senior analyst in the laboratory and analytical information is mainly exchanged through seminar organized by the Association of Occupational Health Analysts. The analysts who are planning to move or considering the company were 48.2%, and the reasons for moving the company were difficult to work(14.0%), low salary(9.6%), employment type(8.8%) and job stress(7.0%). Conclusions: The conclusions of our study were that it was possible to secure reliability by solving the problems such as implementing professional education to improve expertise of analysts, strengthening analytical instruments through institutional improvement and improving work environment.
