  • This article presents a field evaluation of an IP-based architecture for heterogeneous environments that has been developed under the aegis of the Moby Dick project, covering UMTS-like (universal mobile telecommunications system) TD-CDMA (time division-code division multiple access) wireless access technology, wireless and wired LANs. The architecture treats all transmission capabilities as basic physical and data-link layers, and replaces all higher-level tasks by IP-based strategies. The Moby Dick architecture incorporates mobile IPv6, fast handovers, AAA-control (authentication, authorisation, accounting), charging and quality of service (QoS) in an integrated framework. The architecture further allows for optimised control on the radio link layer resources. It has been implemented and tested by expert users, and evaluated by real users on field trials with multiple services available.

  • This paper presents a new dynamically adaptable polling scheme for efficient support of real-time traffic over an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN network. The poll scheduling plays an important role in IEEE 802.11 PCF. However, the current version of the polling list management scheme proposed in the IEEE802.11 standard is inefficient when a variable number of mobile stations have variable packets to transmit. If Point Coordinator has an exact information on the station status, it is possible to efficiently perform polling. In this thesis, we suggest an adaptable polling scheme to meet requirements of the stations. In our scheme, each station transmits packets including a piggyback information to inform that it wants to receive a poll in the next polling duration. Simulation results indicate that our scheme may reduces the packet discard ratio and real-time packet transfer delay.

  • Mobile portable devices for wireless network solely depend on a limited battery power. Therefore, we need to design for wireless communication protocols with an energy efficiency. TCP-Westwood is one of the most important approaches on TCP performance improvement in wireless environments that estimates the available bandwidth by using the sampling mechanism. The advantage is that data can be transmitted efficiently using the estimation of available bandwidth. However, when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment, it does not consider of the sampling mechanism operation. In this thesis, a new energy saving transport protocol, called E2TP(Energy Efficient Transport Protocol), is proposed to solve problems which occur when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment. Also, when there are packet loss while doing frequent link error in a wireless environment, E2TP provides the instantaneous segment size adjustment for a more efficient data retransmission. The simulation result proves that the proposed E2TP has better performance in energy efficiency and throughput than both TCP and TCP-Westwood.

  • Recently with the advancement of local wireless communication technologies, digital trends of audio contents and devices are paving the way for new experiences to network-based audio streaming services. In this paper, we present the Wireless Audio Sharing (WASH) technology over Bluetooth and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). WASH system provides an audio sharing mechanism over multiple users and also provides stereo audio streaming between Bluetooth-enabled devices and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) media devices connected to wired/wireless LANs. To achieve these, we extended the Bluetooth audio distribution profile and combined the extended profile with the UPnP AV architecture. With the implementation of this WASH technology, we show some experimental results of the stereo audio streaming in a real environment.

  • There has been increasing interest in broadband services to mobile terminals. Wireless ATM will be used to support broadband services for future generation mobile service. We propose an algorithm for handover in wireless ATM LANs. We have studied how to treat the loop cancellation and optimization of path extension handover scheme, and present path optimization algorithms : polyangular loop cancellation and triangular loop cancellation. We express the location of MT(mobile terminal) by direction angle, and the direction angles can be converted into direction vectors. Using direction vectors, we can find the current optimal path of MT. The analysis and the experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides the better performance than that of anchor rerouting scheme in average handover delay, handover disruption delay, and buffer requirements.

  • This paper proposes a new backoff scheme to improve the throughput of stations over wireless local area networks. It is designed to carry out the proposed backoff scheme using information of basic service area, such as number of stations, in terms of the throughput. Basic idea of the proposed backoff scheme is that we change the contention window size for backoff time as collisions increase. We evaluate the performance of the proposed backoff scheme using Markov model analysis and compare it with the IEEE 802.11e backoff scheme. The numerical results indicate that the Proposed backoff scheme may offer better performance than the conventional backoff scheme in terms of the throughput.

  • In these days, with the diffusion of mobile equipments, the number of WiFi Access Point (AP) is increasing, and the growth of WiFi AP causes the throughput degradation due to interferences between APs. This recent phenomenon demands the method able to be utilized with current WiFi network to improve the throughput of Wireless LANs. This paper studied the channel assignment method and several throughput enhancement methods to optimize Radio Resource Management (RRM) for distributed infrastructure WLANs. As a result, it was able to put AP independently, improve older allocation error, and improve execution speed.

  • Currently, the IETF group is working on service differentiation in the Internet. However, in wireless environments such as Ad-hoc networks, where channel conditions are variable and bandwidth is scarce, the Internet differentiated services are suboptimal without lower layers' support. The IEEE 802.11 standard for Wireless LANs is the most widely used WLAN standard today. 1t has a mode of operation that can be used to provide service differentiation, but it has been shown to perform badly. In this paper, we present a new service differentiation scheme for support QoS in the wireless IEEE 802.11, which is based on a multiple queuing system to provide priority of user's flow. We simulate and analyze the performance of our algorithm and compare its performance with the original IEEE 802.11b protocol. Simulation results show that our approach increases overall throughput in the MAC layer.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic switching technology between the ad-hoc and the infrastructure modes without user intervention in the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN. Also, we design our proposed technology and implemented on the Linux machine. For this operation, the area within an Access Point (AP) coverage is defined as a switching area, and a node without any transmission in this area is assumed to be able to relay frames between the AP and nodes in the shaded area that is outside the coverage and cannot reach the AP. By using the proposed technology, it is possible to provide the seamless Internet access service to nodes at the ad-hoc mode in the shaded area. In this paper, we explains the operation of the detection method of the switching area, presents the flowchart and implementation environment. To prove the operation of our technology, we obtain the results of captured packets transmitted between nodes and throughput results through ftp transmission experiment. Hence, we can see that our proposed scheme can be improve the wireless access service in wireless and mobile networks.

  • WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) needs error recovery and flow control schemes to support reliable multicast protocol. Limited wireless bandwidth, as well as queuing losses caused by the asymmetric wired/wireless interactions, demands more effective approaches for reducing packet losses. Moreover, since the wireless channel is a shared broadcast medium, if sender receives feedback information simultaneously from several receivers, the feedback delays data frame transmission of forward direction by introducing channel congestion and burden at the sender. Therefore, it is important to minimize the amount of feedback information from receivers. In this paper, we propose an ARS(Adaptive Redundancy Scheme) that combines FEC(Forward Error Correction) using channel state estimation and ARQ(Automatic Repeat Request) both to reduce the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and to guarantee high data reliability in a WLAN multicast environment. Performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by means of analysis and simulations in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. The results show that the proposed scheme reduces the amount of feedback information and the number of retransmissions and guarantees high data reliability, while keeping throughput efficiency similarly with the conventional FEC and ARQ scheme.
