The incidence factors of Rice stripe virus (RSV) were analyzed by studying the population density and the viruliferous insect rate (VIR) of small brown planthopper (SBPH), the incidence of stripe disease, alternate host, and susceptible cultivar in Chungnam Province. The population of overwintering SBPH had been decreasing, but the VIR of overwintering SBPH had not been differing for three years, 2008 to 2010. No RSV was detected in the natural host plants, such as short awn, annual bluegrass, and barley. In 2009, relatively large population of SBPH with the VIR of 5.4% migrated from China. However, there was no evidence relating of migration large amount of SBPH from China in 2008 and 2010. Also the infection rate of RSV in rice was less than 1% in these periods. The cultivation area of the susceptible varieties had steadily decreased from 41% to 19% from 2007 to 2009. Therefore, the reduction factors of rice stripe disease in Chungnam Province with higher influx of inoculum could be with an appropriate forecasting and chemical control, cultivation of resistant varieties, changes in the cropping system, and the low winter-spring temperature.
Epidemiological studies on host rodents of tsutsugamushi disease were carried out during the period of July∼September 1990 at nine localities of central Korea. Among total 111 wild rodents trapped by the modified Sherman live traps, 103 were Apodemus agrarius (92.8%), seven were Crocidura lasiura (6.3%) and one was Microtus fortis (0.9%) , showing 24.0% of trapping rate in winter, 11.7% in spring, 11,2% in summer and 12.0% in autumn. Out of 103 A. agrarius 84 were parasitized by chiggers, showing 81.6% of the infestation rate and 43.0 of the chigger index. The antibody positive rate of A. agrarius sera to Rickettsia tsutsugamushi was significantly variable by locality, being in the range of 0∼78.6%. The seasonal change of the antibody positive rate at Dorai 5-ri, Goyang-gun was 75.8% in average during November∼March, decreased to 30.3% in April and further decreased to 13.3% in average during May∼August. Among 33 antibody positives, 31 were Karp strain and two were Gilliam. Seven Crocidura lasiura sera showed all negative. R. tsutsugamushi organisms were isolated from three A. ngrarius out of 94 mice tested, showing 3.2% of the infection rate.
This survey was aimed to accumulate basic data of aphid population at the Horticultural Experiment Station at Suweon. The yellow pan traps were setted at five locations (Fig.1.), and ran from May 1 to October 31. 1970. About one hundred and twenty species of aphids were trapped, including 24 species of plant vims vectors. Of these, dominant species were as follows: (Asterisk shows virus vector) Aphid species No. of catches * Aphis spiraecola PATCH 2,635, * Aphis craccivora KOCH 2,377, * Myzus persicae SULXER 2,111, Capitophorus hippophaes javanicus H.R. LAMBERS 2,051, Anoecia fulviabdominalis SASAKI 1,480, * Aphis gossypii GLOVER 867, * Macrosiphum avenae FABRICIUS 859, Cervaphis quercus TAKAHASHI 692, * Lipaphis erysimi KALTENBACH 645, Pleotrichophorus chrysanthemi THEOBALD 489, The above 10 species consisted $76.5\%$ of total catches and the 24 vector species consisted $55.5\%$. The curve of the seasonal occurrence of flying aphids at Horticultural Experiment Station shows bimodal, typical for the temperate region. The total number of trapped aphids at the Station from May to September, 1970, were less than that of average yearly catches at the College of Agriculture from 1967 to 1970. Thi, low numbers at Horticultural Experiment Station may attribute to the frequent spraying of insecticides from Spring to Summer on growing crops there. But the aphids population increase suddenly in the middle of October. This might be resulted from cease of insecticide applications and migration of aphids from summer host to winter host plants.

Ostrinia larvae feed the pods and stem of red bean and seriously damage the bean production from farmers. In this study we investigated biological and developmental characteristics including field collection, host feeding preference, artificial rearing diet, morphological and molecular taxonomical identification, and pheromone analysis for an Ostrinia sp. in Korea. The male adults have massive tibia in the middle legs and 3-lobed uncus in the genitalia. The partial nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and II (COII) were not corresponded to those DNA sequences from other Ostrinia species reported previously in Japan and China. Host plants for this species are also different from the previous species reported. In the gas chromatography (GC) analyses, (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate was not detected from the pheromone gland of our species while the component as a sex pheromone was found in O. zaguliaevi and O. zealis, With taken results, we conclude this Ostrinia species in Korea is Ostrinia scapulalis or closely related species. When larvae collected in a fall were incubated in the outdoor condition, they emerged to adult between June and July in the next year. The result indicates that the winter diapause could be started in late larval stage. In addition, we developed a semi-synthetic artificial diet adopted for mass rearing of the O. scapulalis in laboratory.
The smaller brown planthopper overwinters mostly as the fourth instar nymph. The emerged adult disperses to winter barley or wheat plants. The adult of the first generation disperses into the rice field, and spends three generations in the rice field. The population densities of the adults of the first generation and the overall density of the second generations are the most important in relation to the incidents of the rice stripe disease which is transmitted by this insects. This study was intended to analyse the population increases in these important generations in relation to the kind and the different growing stage of the host plants. The insects were reared on potted host plants of different growing stage in the insect cages. The population increases of the insects in the cages were compared with those on the rice seedlings in the laboratory. The results are as follows: 1. The average longevities of the adults of the generations were 13.4 days for the overwintered, 12.9 days for the first, and 10.2 days for the second generation, and showed no significant differences between the generations even they seemed to be shorter than normal condition probably caused by the frequent disturbance at the time of food renewal in 2 or 3 days. 2. When they were reared on the rice seedling, the average numbers of the eggs per female were 131.2 for the overwintered generation, 124.9 for the first generation grown on the barley, and 142.3 for the second generation grown on rice, and shelved no significant differences between the generations. More than $90\%$ of the eggs were laid within 3 weeks. 3. The hatchabilities of the eggs laid on the rice seedling in laboratory were $77.4\%$ for the first generation, $93.1\%$ for the second generation and $62.1\%$ for the third generation. The estimated hatchabilities of the eggs were $67.5\%$ for the first generation, $84.1\%$for the second generation, and $21.9\%$ for the third generation with the growing plants on the plots. The hatchability on the eggs laid by the adults infested on the barley on May 17 was $13.5\%$ compared with $67.5\%$ for the eggs laid by those infested on barley in late April. 4. The average total nymphal periods were 19.4 days for the first generation, and 13.3 days for the second generation in the laboratory and the mortalities of the nymphs seemed to related with the growing stages of the host plants. 5. With the pot experiments, the average per cents of the emerged adults were $37.2\%$ for the first generation, $55.3\%$ for the second generation, and $11.6\%$, for the third generation. The average numbers of the emerged adults were $7.4\%$ for the pots infested on the barley on May 17, instead of $37.2\%$ adults for those infested in late April. 6. From above results, it may suggest that the innate qualities of the insect are not significantly different between generations, and the differences in the increase of the population for the generations might effected considerably by the differences in the physiological conditions of tile host plant, besides the differences in physical and other biological factors.

The caterpillar-shaped Chinese medicinal mushroom (DongChongXiaCao) looks like a worm in the winter and like a grass in the summer. The fruiting body has been regarded as popular folk or effective medicines used to treat human diseases such as asthma, bronchial and lung inflammation, and kidney disease. The fruiting bodies of Cordyceps militaris, C. pruinosa and Paecilomyces tenuipes that formed on the living silkworm (Bombyx mori) host were used in this examination. This study was carried out to investigate the soluble sugar, amino acid and fatty acid profiles in the fruiting-bodies. Soluble sugars such as glycerol, glucose, mannitol and sucrose were mainly found in the fruiting bodies of C. militaris, C. pruinosa and P. tenuipes. Total soluble sugar content was 29.23 mg/g in C. militaris, 8.61 mg/g in C. pruinosa and 24.00 mg/g 1in P. tenuipes on dry weight basis. Total free amino acid content was 14.09 mg/g 1in C. militaris, 34.60 mg/g in C. pruinosa and 17.09 mg/g in P. tenuipes. The content of oleic acid in fatty acids was above high more than 30% regardless of species.
Purpose: The incidence of acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) in Korea has changed. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical changes of APSGN observed in a single Korean institution over two decades. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 99 children (0-15 years of age) who were admitted to our institution with APSGN between 1987 and 2013. The patients were selected based on the depression of serum complement 3 (C3, <70 mg/dL) and elevated titer of antistreptolysin O (ASO, >250 IU/dL) as evidence of previous streptococcal infection. Results: In the 99 patients, the mean age was $8.3{\pm}2.7$ years, and the male-to-female ratio was 2.2:1 (66:30). The annual number of cases fluctuated markedly, and most cases were observed during the late autumn and winter months. However, there have been few cases reported in the past 5 years. Clinical manifestations at presentation, including hypertension and generalized oedema, and the duration of hospitalization were higher and longer in patients admitted during the first half of the study period than during the most recent half-period, suggesting a more severe clinical course in the former group. Conclusions: APSGN has become a rare disease in Korea with a trend towards a less severe clinical course. This finding suggests that the prevalence of infection-related immune-mediated diseases could change over-time, together with environmental and possibly pathogen-host relationship changes.

Toxoplasma gondii is a species of parasitic protozoa in the genus Toxoplasma. The definitive host of T. gondii is the cat, but the parasite can be carried by the vast majority of warm-blooded animals, including humans. It is often found in the tissues of food animals including pigs and sheep. To determine the regional prevalence of infection with T. gondii, bloods (n=300) from domestic pigs and tissues (n=200) from slaughter pigs in Gyeongnam province were tested using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of antibody and antigen. A total of 115 sero-positive pigs were identified for a prevalence rate of 38.3%. Of the 50 herds from domestic pigs tested, 34 had at least one sero-positive pig for a herd prevalence rate of 68.0%. Sero-positive rates of pigs in fattening farm were higher than that of pigs in breeding company. Sero-positive rates of sows were higher than that of growing pigs. Seasonally, sero-positive rates of pigs were highest in winter (80.0%) and lowest in spring (23.8%). According to farm size, sero-positive rates of pigs were higher in small size farms (${\leq}$2,000) than that of big size farms (>2,000). However, none of the bloods (n=300) from domestic pigs and tissues (n=200) from slaughter pigs were positive for T. gondii specific DNA by PCR.
The fruiting bodies of Paecilomyces tenuipes that formed on the living silkworm (Bombyx mon) host were used in this examination. This study was carried out to investigate the proximate composition, soluble sugar, amino acid and fatty acid profiles, and contents of the bioactive ingredient including adenosine and D-mannitol in the fruiting-bodies. The moisture content was 57.56%. Soluble sugars found were glycerol, glucose, mannitol and sucrose, and the contents exceeded $24\;mgg^{-1}dry$ weight. Total free amino acid content was $17.09\;mgg^{-1}dry$ weight. Arginine, glycine, proline and tyrosine were main amino acids. The content of oleic acid in fatty acids was high. Adenosine was more abundant in fruiting bodies than corpus.
Yedang lake has so plentiful pondage and many species of fresh-walter-fish that a large number of people crowd around there all the year round. Most of them are not used to prevent tsutsugamushi disease spreading by chigger(T-mite). Accordingly, this study was carried out in order to obtain basic materials for prevention of this disease and the results are summarized as follows. The number of wild rat that captured in surveyed areas was sixty five(apodemus agrarius: 63, Rattus norvegicus: 2) during the period of a year and ration of captured rats to trap was about 8%. The dominant species of T-mite in all the surveyed areas were Leptotrombidium pallidum and L. palpale and the total number collected was 5782.9 with one family, two genra, eight species. The density of T-mites that collected from rats in three areas(Nodongri, Hatanbangri, Kyochonri) appeared $743.3{\pm}80.4,\;847.2{\pm}86.2\;and\;869.6{\pm}86.4,\;and\;in\;soil\;149.5{\pm}13.9,;154.7{\pm}14.7\;and\;182.4{\pm}20.8$ respectively. On the whole, the number of T-mite that collected from the rats was about three times as much as it in soil. The comparison of individual number of T-mite per a rat collected in three surveyed sites(A,B and C) showed 126.7, 243.1, 258.6 and per $2,000cm^3$ of soil 12.7, 12.7, 54.6, 103.5 respectively. In other word, the number of T-mite at site A and B is smaller than that at area C, thus comparing habitats of three sites each other, C is better living environment of rat and mite than that of A or B. Seasonl occuarance of t-mite that is from rat gradually was increased toward winter and showed the peak to January, and decreased since March but it in soil was inverse proportion to it from rats, because the larvae of T-mite that was hatched in soil was transmited to host in order to suck the body fluid.
