Recently, because a renewable power source must operate as a constant rate in accordance with RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard), the study of the renewable power sources has been ongoing. Especially because of noise of wind turbine, troubleshooting, and urban greening business, research related with small wind turbine are underway. The economics and reliability are important parts for the activation of small wind turbine, such as solar energy. In this paper, by analyzing the temperature variations for each location and efficiency of power conversion devices in accordance with short period wind speed changes in simulation test, we reviewed the safety about temperature variations of wind generator and the method of selection of power converter.

This paper presents a modeling and simulation of a utility-connected wind energy conversion system with a link of a rectifier and an inverter. It discusses the maximum power control algorithm for the wind turbine and presents the relationship of wind turbine output, rotor speed, power coefficient, tip-speed ratio and wind speed when the wind turbine is operated under the maximum power control algorithm. The control objective is to extract maximum power from wind and transfer the power to the utility. This is achieved by controlling the pitch angle of the wind turbine blades. Pitch control method is mechanically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation method. The simulation results performed on MATLAB will show the variation of generator's rotor speed, pitch angle, and generator output.

In a power system with a high wind power penetration level, the output power of a wind power plant (WPP) might give negative impacts on the frequency control of a power system. This paper proposes a power smoothing scheme of a wind turbine generator (WTG) to reduce the frequency deviation. To do this, an additional control loop is used, the output of which depends on the frequency deviation. The gain of the additional loop is determined depending on the kinetic energy (KE) of a WTG; in the under frequency condition, the gain is set to be proportional to the releasable KE of a WTG; otherwise, it is set to the maximum value. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated for 100-MW doubly-fed induction generator based WPP using an EMTP-RV simulator under various wind conditions. The results show that the proposed scheme successfully reduces the frequency deviation.

In this paper a new dc-link type wind turbine generator system using a shaft generator system, which is widely used for power sources in a ship, is proposed. The basic configuration of the proposed wind turbine generating system is first explained. And the equations expressing the system are derived. Then the steady-state characteristics of the generating system are discussed. We use an experimental system that can simulate the characteristics of a wind turbine in this study, because it is hard to operate an actual wind turbine in a laboratory. In addition, the transient responses of this system are investigated when the velocity of the wind is changed. It is shown that experimental results were very close to the simulated ones, supporting the usefulness of the theory.

The wind power is known as the most promising future energy source to obtain the electricity. Induction generator is a simple energy conversion wit in the wind power generation system but it consumes the reactive power from the interconnected power system. Switched capacitor banks are normally used to compensate the reactive power, which bring about the transient overvoltage. This paper proposes a method for compensating the reactive power with STATCOM. A detail simulation model for analyzing the interaction between the wind power system and the commercial power system was developed using EMTDC software. The developed simulation model can be effectively utilized to plan the reactive power compensation for newly designed wind power system.

This paper proposes a wind energy conversion system connected to a grid using a self-excited induction generator (SEIG) based on the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control scheme. The induction generator (IG) is controlled by the MPPT below the base speed and the maximum energy can be captured from the wind turbine. Therefore, the stator currents of the IG are optimally controlled using the indirect field orientation control (IFOC) according to the generator speed in order to maximize the generated power from the wind turbine. The SEIG feeds a (CRPWM) converter which regulates the DC-link voltage at a constant value where the speed of the IG is varied. Based on the IG d-q axes dynamic model in the synchronous reference frame at field orientation, high-performance synchronous current controllers with satisfactory performance are designed and analyzed. Utilizing these current controllers and IFOC, a fast dynamic response and low current harmonic distortion are attained. The regulated DC-link voltage feeds a grid connected CRPWM inverter. By using the virtual flux orientation control and the synchronous frame current regulators for the grid connected CRPWM inverter, a fast current response, low harmonic distortion and unity power factor are achieved. The complete system has been simulated with different wind velocities. The simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed MPPT control scheme for a wind energy system. In the simulation results, the d-q axes current controllers and DC-link voltage controller give prominent dynamic response in command tracking and load regulation characteristics.

The paper discuses characteristics of an axial-flux permanent-magnet generator for a gearless wind energy system which aims to be satisfied with variable operating conditions. Design and construction of an axial-flux permanent- magnet generator with power output at 60[Hz], 300[r/min] for wind energy system is introduced. Finite-element method (FEM) is applied to analyze generator performance at variable load. The results of FE analysis show this generator Is feasible for use with a wind turbine.

This paper describes development of hardware simulator for the PMSG wind power system, which was designed considering wind characteristic, blade characteristic and blade inertia compensation. The simulator consists of three major parts, such as wind turbine model using induction motor, PMSG generator, converter-inverter set. and control system. The turbine simulator generates torque and speed signals for a specific wind turbine with respect to given wind speed. This torque and speed signals are scaled down to fit the input of 2kW PMSG. The PMSG-side converter operates to track the maximum power point, and the grid-side inverter controls the active and reactive power supplied to the grid. The operational feasibility was verified by computer simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC, and the implementation feasibility was confirmed through experimental works with a hardware set-up.

IEC 61400-25(Communications for monitoring and control of wind power plants) is established as a international standard by IEC TC 88 in 2007 with the growth of the wind power industry. In this paper, MMS service which is defined in lEC 61400-25 part 4 is implemented, and the wind power generator is objectified by using the VMD of MMS service. We also implemented MMS communication system between the wind power generator and the local control center using the proposed VMD. The performance of the developed MMS communication system is verified through the XML based user interface on the web browser.
