Glass-ceramics were fabricated by heat-treating a glass at $700^{\circ}C$/10hr which was obtained by melting a glass frit mixed with $40{\sim}80 wt%$ EAF dust at $1300^{\circ}C$/1hr. Dependence of crystal phase and bonding state change upon a compositional change and heat treatment condition were studied and the results was connected to the toxic characterization leaching procedure (TCLP) test data to investigate a chemical durability of the specimens. Increasing dust in a glass shifted the peak around $1000cm^{-1}$ to the lower frequency which was composed of two vibration peaks for the nonbridging oxygen at $960cm^{-1}$ and the bridging oxygen at $1050{\sim}1060cm^{-1}$. Also, the $B_2O_3$ structure of boroxol ring changed to a tetrhedral-, trigonal- and di-borate with dust addition. The Fe-O peaks in the glass-ceramics were observed which is consitent with XRD results of spinel formation. The surface of glass after TCLP test was severely cracked while there was no cracks on a glass-ceramics after TCLP test so the chemical durability of the glass-ceramics is superior than that of glass. The leaching concentration of Fe for the glass-ceramics containing EAF dust 80 wt% is 1/15 times lower than that of glass. The Zn leaching concentration fur the glass-ceramics containing dust < 70 wt% was higher than that of glass but its trend was reversed for the specimen of dust content > 80 wt% which could be concluded as correlated with occurrence of willemite phase.
In order to improve the optical Performance of green emitting phosphor for plasma display panel (PDP) application, the wet chemical method for preparing $Zn_{2-x}$$SiO_4$:xMn (xi=0.02. 0.08) phosphor was designed. The spherical phosphor particles were obtained and the size can be between 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 2$\mu\textrm{m}$. The formation of phosphor, which had the willemite structure, was completed at relatively low temperature of 108$0^{\circ}C$. Also, photoluminescence Properties of the phosphors prepared were investigated under vacuum ultraviolet excitation. In particular, the emission intensity of Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:0.08Mn phosphor having the 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ of particle size was higher than that of commercial phosphor by 40%. The decay time of zinc silicate powder prepared as containing 8 mole% of manganese has been measured as 7.8ms.

In order to improve the photoluminescent properties and crystallinity, Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn, M(M=Cr, Ti) phosphors were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The willemite single phase was obtained at 110$0^{\circ}C$, which is lower temperature than that of the conventional solid-state reaction (130$0^{\circ}C$). The characteristics of fired samples were obtained by a 147 nm excitation source under VUV (Vacuum Ultraviolet). To investigation the effect of co-dopant, the content of Mn and the ratio of $H_2O$ to TEOS was fixed as 2 ㏖% and 36. 1, respectively. The highest emission intensity was obtained when the concentration of Cr and Ti was 0.1 ㏖% relative to Zn$_2$SiO$_4$:Mn. While the emission intensity decrease continuously the decay time improved as increased the Cr concentration. In the case of Ti added samples, however, the emission intensity increase up to 2 ㏖% concentration.
With the content of ZnO varing from 10.5 to 47.4 wt%, the crystallization of lithium zinc silicate glass was investigated by DTA, XRD, and SEM. In this work P2O5 was used as nucleation agent. The crystallization temperature was found to increase with the content of ZnO and the microstructure of formed crystalling phases was studied through the scanning electron microscopy. According to the XRD analysis, the crystal phases formed are summarized as follows. 1) The major phases are lithium orthosilicate, lithium disilicate and quartz at 10.5 wt% ZnO. 2) Lithium zinc silicate polymorphous and cristobalite occur in the composition varying 21.3 to 30.8 wt% ZnO. 3) At composition containing 47.4wt% ZnO some quantity of willemite is formed.

$(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphors doped with Ca were synthesized by solid state reaction method. $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphors showed XRD patterns of Willemite structure. Also, $CaSiO_3$ structure and new peak near 610 nm in $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn with increasing value of x were observed from XRD and PL. The new peak near 610 nm in $(Zn_{1-x}Ca_x)_2SiO_4$:Mn with doping Ca was attributed to formation of $CaSiO_3$.
$\textrm{Zn}_{2-x}\textrm{Mn}_{x}\textrm{SiO}_{4}$ green phosphors have been prepared by the solution reaction method and the photoluminescence and crystalline properties were studied as a function of both the firing temperature ($900^{\circ}C$~$1200^{\circ}C$) and the concentration of Mn activator (x=0.01~0.20). Under 147 nm and 254nm and excitation sources, the emission intensity of the phosphors was increased about 4 times increasing firing temperatures from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. From the XRD analysis, $\textrm{Zn}_{2}\textrm{SiO}_{4}$:Mn phosphors fired above $1100^{\circ}C$ showed willemite crystal structure. Under 147nm excitation, the maximum emission intensity was obtained at the Mn concentration of x=0.02 for $\textrm{Zn}_{2-x}\textrm{Mn}_{x}\textrm{SiO}_{4}$ phosphors fired at $1200^{\circ}C$ and the concentration quenching was occurred at the Mn concentration above x=0.10. The phosphor particles showed almost spherical shapes with the average size of around 2~3$\mu\textrm{m}$ by the SEM morphology.

Zinc crystals of ZnO and SiO2 in glaze raw materials, developed according to composition and firing requirements, are preferred because of their high decorative properties. However, most zinc crystal glazes have a high firing temperature and a narrow firing temperature range, making it difficult to use them as commercial glazes in ceramics. Therefore, in this study, it was expected that the firing temperature of a typical zinc crystal glaze could be lowered to below 1270℃ by using the eutectic effect through mixing frit, the main raw material used in manufacturing zinc crystal glaze. As a result, not only was the formation temperature of zinc crystals lower in the mixed frit glaze, but also the firing temperature range was widened to 1230~1270℃, making it possible to develop a glaze that produces crystals stably. The firing temperature was lowered to 1230~1250℃ and the holding temperature during cooling was lowered to about 950℃, resulting in the development of an economically effective glaze. When using a combination of frit, it has been shown that the holding temperature during cooling affects the recrystallization of zinc crystals depending on the composition of the glaze, and the crystal structure can be adjusted at this time. Additionally, the amount and shape of crystals can be controlled by using a nucleating agent.
NiO-doped hibonite pigments were synthesized by the solid state method to get stabilized blue color pigment in both oxidation and reduction atmospheres. Optimum substitution condition with NiO for hibonite blue pigment was investigated. Experimental results were comparable to those of previous cobalt-minimization studies performed with other phosphate- or oxide-based cobalt-containing ceramic pigments (having olivine ($Co_2SiO_4$), spinel ($CoAl_2O_4$), or with co-doped willemite ($(Co,Zn)_2SiO_4$) structures). Composition was designed varying the NiO molar ratio increasing with $SnO_2$. The optimum substitution content is 0.93 mole NiO with 0.75mole $SnO_2$. The characteristics of the synthesized pigment were analyzed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and UV-vis. Synthesized pigment was applied to a lime-barium glaze with 10 wt% each and fired at an oxidation atmosphere of $1250^{\circ}C/1h$ and a reducing atmosphere $1240^{\circ}C/1h$. Blue color was obtained with $L^*a^*b^*$ values at 43.39, -6.78, -18.20 under a reducing atmosphere and 41.66, -6.36, -14.7 under and oxidation atmosphere, respectively.
Recently developed Plasma Display Panels (PDP) require phosphors of high luminance at Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) excitation. The present investigation developed new PDP phosphors using combinatorial chemistry method. We applied T $b^{3+}$ -activated yttrium gadolinium phosphates system to our combinatorial fine-tuning technique. As a result, the optimum composition was determined to be (G $d_{0.74}$$Y_{0.11}$T $b_{0.15}$) $P_{1.15}$$O_{\delta}$ through the two-step combinatorial screening process including excess phosphorous and Gd replacement. We found that the sample of the optimum composition shows a higher luminescence efficiency at VUV excitation and a shorter decay time than the commercially available Z $n_2$$SiO_4$:Mn phosphor.
