  • In this paper we introduced a new score generating function for the rank dispersion function in a multiple linear model. Based on the new score function, we derived the asymptotic relative efficiency, ARE(11, rs), of our score function with respect to the Wilcoxon scores for the generalized F distributions which show very flexible distributions with a variety of shape and tail behaviors. We thoroughly explored the selection of r and s of our new score function that provides improvement over the Wilcoxon scores.

  • The power function in sample size determination has to be characterized by an appropriate statistical test for the hypothesis of interest. Nonparametric tests are suitable in the analysis of ordinal data or frequency data with ordered categories which appear frequently in the biomedical research literature. In this paper, we study sample size calculation methods for the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test for one- and two-dimensional ordinal outcomes. While the sample size formula for the univariate outcome which is based on the variances of the test statistic under both null and alternative hypothesis perform well, this formula requires additional information on probability estimates that appear in the variance of the test statistic under alternative hypothesis, and the values of these probabilities are generally unknown. We study the advantages and disadvantages of different sample size formulas with simulations. Sample sizes are calculated for the two-dimensional ordinal outcomes of efficacy and safety, for which bivariate Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test is appropriate than the multivariate parametric test.

  • In clinical research, sample size determination is one of the most important things. There are parametric method using t-test and non-parametric method suggested by Kim and Kim (2007) based on Wilcoxon's rank sum test for determining sample size in non-inferiority trials. In this paper, we propose sample size calculation method based on placements method suggested by Orban and Wolfe (1982) and using the power calculated by Kim (1994) in non-inferiority trials. We also compare proposed sample size with that using Kim and Kim (2007)'s formula and that of t-test for parametric methods. As the result, sample size calculated by proposed method based on placements is the smallest. Therefore, proposed method based on placements is better than parametric methods in case that it's hard to assume specific distribution function for population and also more efficient in terms of time and cost than method based on Wilcoxon's rank sum test.

  • Two-arm non-inferiority trials is often applied to parametric procedure suggested by Hauschke et al. (1999). Since this design does not allow a direct comparison of a new treatment group with placebo group, parametric procedure in a three-arm non-inferiority trial with a placebo group was suggested by Pigeot et al. (2003). But, procedures in these designs are necessary for distribution assumptions. Therefore we propose, in this paper, non parametric procedures employing Wilcoxon rank sum test in a two-arm design and linear contrast test suggested by Scheirer et al. (1976) in a three-arm design. The proposed nonparametric procedures and parametric procedures are compared by Monte Carlo simulation study.

  • Objective : To observe the efficacy and safety of CheungYeolYiSeup-tang and Hwangbaek external dressings on dampness-heat pattern atopic dermatitis(AD) in a non-comparative study. Methods : 10 patients with AD were included for 4 weeks of treatment. Efficacy and safety assessment included the scoring atopic dermatitis index(SCORAD), typical signs and symptoms of AD, results of some laboratory tests related to toxicity, and the incidence of adverse events. Results : Improvements in efficacy parameters were observed and produced no significant changes in laboratory tests related to toxicity in these patients. Their SCORAD results significantly decreased after 4weeks(P value<.01, according to the Wilcoxon sum of ranks test). Similarly, significant reductions from baseline in subjective pruritus scores and (P value<.05 by the Wilcoxon sum of ranks test) and the mean average of individual signs and symptoms of AD were reported after 4 weeks(P value<.05, P<0.01 by the Wilcoxon sum of ranks test). There were no significant changes in eosinophil, neutrophil, lymphocyte, immunoglobulin E and ESR in blood serum by paired ttest. Conclusion :CheungYeolYiSeup-tang administration and Hwangbaek external dressings are an effective and safe treatment for the management of dampness-heat pattern atopic dermatitis.

  • An edge is where the intensity of an image moves from a low value to high value or vice versa. The edges tell where objects are. their shape and size. and something about their texture. Many traditional edge operators are derivative based and perform reasonably well for simple noise-free images. In recent, statistical edge detectors for complex images with noises have been described. This paper compares and analysis the performance of statistical edge detectors based on the T test and Wilcoxon test, and mathematical edge detectors based on Sobel operator, and the well-known Canny detector and Wavelet transformation detector, and provides the implementation of these edge detectors using Java on the web.

  • In this paper we propose Wilcoxon test, Median test and Van der Waerden test such as linear rank tests in two-sample location problem for detecting edges effectively in noisy images. These methods are based on detecting image intensity changes between two pixel neighborhoods using an edge-height model to perform effectively on noisy images. The neighborhood size used here is small and its shape is varied adaptively according to edge orientations. We compare and analysis the performance of these statistical edge detectors on both natural images and synthetic images with and without noise.

  • In this paper we employ two-sample location tests such as Wilcoxon test and T test for detecting edges in noisy images. For this, we compute a test statistic on pixel gray levels obtained using an edge-height parameter and compare it with a threshold determined by a significance level. Experimental results applied to sample images are given and performances of these tests in terms of the objective measure are compared.

  • We study problems of sample size determination for one-sample location tests. A simulation study shows that sample size calculations based on approximated distribution do not achieve the nominal level of power. We investigate sample size determinations based on exact distribution and with a power that attains the nominal level.
