  • This paper presents a steady-state operation analysis of full-bridge series-resonant inverters focusing on the distorted load current due to low-quality-factor resonant circuits in induction heating and other applications. The regions of operation based on the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and non-zero-voltage switching (NON-ZVS) operations of the asymmetrical voltage-cancellation control technique are identified. The effects of a distorted load current under a wide range of output powers are also analyzed for achieving a precise ZVS operating region. An experimental study is performed with a 1kW prototype. Simulation and experimental studies have confirmed the validity of the proposed method. An efficiency comparison between the variable frequency method and the conventional fixed-frequency method is provided.

  • In this paper, we present the voltage source algorithm for high speed and low torque ripple operation of a switched reluctance motor (SRM). The SRM has simpler structure than the traditional dc or ac motor. It has a high starting torque and can be operated in the wide range of speed. So it can be applied to various areas. But the SRM has some difficulties in driving circuit and controller due to the large inductance variations. In this study, in order to produce the low torque ripple and the high speed operation, a voltage source algorithm is proposed. We showed the good performance of the proposed controller through simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper, diagnosis for 85 high voltage induction motors which have operated for more than 20 years in 18 wide area water supply offices were applied and the results of diagnosis were analysed. Furthermore, main factors that would be affecting rotor defects were selected and correlations between dependent variables which was magnitude for sideband frequency on current during operation and independent variables such as starting characteristic, operating time, number of operation, load factor, maker, rotation speed, capacity were analysed. It was clear that factors including starting characteristic, number of operation, maker, rotation speed caused break by correlation analysis. From this, regression equation was deduced through regression analysis. Based on suggested regression equation, it is applied usefully that we can estimate the condition of rotor without onsite diagnosis and plan the schedule of diagnosis.

  • The switched reluctance motor has high efficiency over a wide range of speed and torque. However the switched reluctance motor exhibit comparatively low efficiency in the chopped excitation which produces additional inverter losses. This paper examines the optimal efficiency operation using choppingless excitation under the changed supply voltage. The excitation is designed to produce the required torque and speed satisfying the optimal efficiency in a nonlinear switched reluctance motor. The optimal algorithm is applied to 119 operation points which are chosen over the full range of driving torque and speed. The result in this paper indicate the improved efficiency comparing to the efficiency obtained by both switched and chopped excitataions under a fixed supply voltage.

  • In this paper, we designed POCSAG Signal Decoder to improve operating time in pager. We showed POCSAG Signal Pattern sent by transmitter and operation of this decoder. We also showed that the Pager using this decoder was equipped with Wide Area Signal Detection and designed the hardware which realizes this operation and implemented it with ASIC chip. As we inspected the function of the ASIC chip and tested the performance, we could find that the chip operated in low voltage and that power dissipation was low.

  • A novel six-step current source inverter (CSI) with DC-side commutation and energy rebound capability is presented with detailed explanation of the circuit operation. The prposed inverter can operate in a very wide range of frequency and load variation by employing DC-side commutation. Also, the energy rebound makes the use of low voltage SCR's possible and increases the inverter efficiency. Motor operation is also possible in four quadrants in this proposed current source inverter. The advantages of the proposed CSI over conventional ones are described and experimental results are given in oscillograms.

  • In this study, a single-stage, four-phase, interleaved, totem-pole AC-DC converter is proposed for a super-fast charger station that requires high power, a wide voltage range, and bidirectional operation capabilities and adopts various types of electric transport vehicles. The proposed topology is based on current-fed push-pull dual active bridge converter combined with the totem-pole operation. Owing to the four-phase interleaving effect, the bridge on the grid side can switch at 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 to achieve a ripple-free grid current. The input filter can be removed theoretically. Switching methods for the duty of the secondary-side duty cycle are proposed, and they correspond to the primary duty cycle for reducing the circulating power and handling the total harmonic distortion. Therefore, the converter can operate under a wide voltage range. Experimental results from a 7.5 kW prototype are used to validate the proposed concept.

  • DC-DC buck converter is a critical building block in the power management integrated circuit (PMIC) architecture for the portable devices such as cellular phone, personal digital assistance (PDA) because of its power efficiency over a wide range of conversion ratio. To ensure a safe operation, avoid unexpected damages and enhance the reliability of the converter, fully-integrated protection circuits such as over voltage protection (OVP), under voltage lock out (UVLO), startup, and thermal shutdown (TSD) blocks are designed. In this paper, these three fully-integrated protection circuit blocks are proposed for use in the DC-DC buck converter. The buck converter with proposed protection blocks is operated with a switching frequency of 1 MHz in continuous conduction mode (CCM). In order to verify the proposed scheme, the buck converter has been designed using a 180 nm CMOS technology. The UVLO circuit is designed to track the input voltage and turns on/off the buck converter when the input voltage is higher/lower than 2.6 V, respectively. The OVP circuit blocks the buck converter's operation when the input voltage is over 3.3 V, thereby preventing the destruction of the devices inside the controller IC. The TSD circuit shuts down the converter's operation when the temperature is over $85^{\circ}C$. In order to verify the proposed scheme, these protection circuits were firstly verified through the simulation in SPICE. The proposed protection circuits were then fabricated and the measured results showed a good matching with the simulation results.

  • A new three-level resonant converter suitable for wide input variation is proposed. A hybrid combination of a three-level converter controlled by phase-shift modulation and a half-bridge converter is presented. Since the voltage of each switch is one half of the input voltage, it has advantages of the choice and characteristics of switches. The ZVS operation of the converter is achieved by using the magnetizing current of the transformer. To verify the theoretical analysis, experimental results of the proposed converter are presented.

  • A 5.8-inch wide-QQVGA flexible full-color active-matrix OLED display was fabricated on a plastic substrate. Low-voltage-operation organic TFTs and high-efficiency phosphorescent OLEDs were used as the backplane and emissive pixels, respectively. The fabricated display clearly showed color moving images when the driving voltage was below 15 V.
