  • In the micro hole punching, the size and shape of burr and burnish zone are very important factors to evaluate quality of micro holes which depend on punch-die clearance, strain rate, workpiece material and etc. To get micro holes with small burr and wide burnish zone for industrial demands, not only the parametric study but also a study on fracture behavior in shear band are necessary. In this study, 100 $\mu$m, 25 $\mu$m micro holes in diameter were fabricated on brass (Cu63/Zn37) and SUS 316 foils as aspect ratio 1:1, and the characteristics of micro holes was investigated comparing with those of macro holes over several mm by scanning electron microscopic views and section views. Like macro hole, micro hole is also composed of 4 portions, rollover. burnish zone, fracture zone and burr, and it shows similar fracture behavior in shear band. But by high strain rate (10$^2$∼10$^3$s$^{-1}$ ) condition unlike that of macro hole fabrication and by the increment of relative grain size in the direction of the workpiece thickness, fracture zone is not observed.

  • In this paper, a Gm-C LPF utilizing common-mode feedforward (CMFF) CMOS inverter type operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) has been designed and verified by circuit simulations. The CMFF CMOS inverter OTA was optimized for wide input linearity and low current consumption using a standard 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process; gm of 100 ${\mu}S$ and current of 100 ${\mu}A$ at supplied voltage of 1.3 V. Using this optimized CMFF CMOS inverter type OTA, an elliptic 5th order Gm-C LPF for GPS specifications was designed. Gain and frequency tuning of the LPF was done by changing the internal supply voltages. The designed Gm-C LPF gave pass-band ripple of 1.6 dB, stop-band attenuation of 60.8 dB, current consumption of 0.60 mA at supply voltage of 1.2 V. The gain and frequency characteristics of designed Gm-C LPF was unchanged even though the input common-mode voltage is varied.

  • In this paper, we proposed an internal multiband loop embedded monopole antenna for mobile handset that could be used for smart phones. The proposed antenna has a volume of 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 15 mm(L) ${\times}$ 5 mm(H), ground plane size is 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 80 mm(L), and covers the GSM900 (Global System for Mobile communications : 880-960 MHz), K-PCS (Korea-Personal Communications Service : 1750-1870 MHz), US-PCS (US Personal Communications Service : 1850-1990 MHz), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access : 1920-2170 MHz), Wibro (2300-2390 MHz), Bluetooth (2400-2483 MHz) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network : 2400-2483.5 MHz) bands for VSWR (voltage standing wave ration) less than 3. The proposed loop adding design at middle section of longest branch showed wide impedance bandwidth for the lowest resonance frequency band. The proposed antenna have a lowest resonance frequency band from 738 MHz to 1075 MHz for S11 value of -6dB. A HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) of the Ansys Corporation based on a finite element method is employed to analyze the proposed antenna in the design process and to compare the simulation and experimental results.

  • The proposed print antenna using Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) method is analyzed in this paper. A low radiation resistance and an ultra-wide band of this antenna are also presented. The propagation process of the reflected wave and the electric field distribution in the time domain are calculated in respectively. The antenna parameters are optimized for the maximum band width, return loss, input impedance, and radiation pattern in the frequency domain using Fourier transforming. The experimental bandwidth of the antenna is 1.85GHz~6.35GHz for the VSWR less than or equal to 2.0. The measured results are relatively in good agreement with the FDTD results. The proposed antenna can be applied to various applications such as UWB, broadcasting-network system.

  • A 94-GHz phased array antenna using a log-periodic antenna has been developed on a GaAs substrate. The developed phased array antenna comprises four log-periodic antennas, a phase shifter, and a Wilkinson power divider. This antenna was fabricated using the standard microwave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC) process including an air bridge for unipolar circuit implementations on the same GaAs substrate. The total chip size of the fabricated phased array antenna is 4.8 mm × 4.5 mm. Measurement results showed that the fabricated phased array antenna had a very wide band performance from 80 GHz to 110 GHz with return loss characteristics better than -10 dB. In the center frequency of 94 GHz, the fabricated phased array antenna showed a return loss of -16 dB and a gain of 4.43 dBi. The developed antenna is expected to be widely applied in many applications at W-band frequency.

  • A small wide-field imaging telescope is a powerful instrument to survey the Universe: wide-field image can monitor the variability of many sources at a time, e.g. young stellar objects and active galactic nuclei, and it can be an effective way to locate transient sources without precise positional information such as gravitational wave sources or some gamma-ray bursts. In February 2017, we installed a 0.25 m f/3.6 telescope on the McDonald 0.8 m telescope as a piggyback system. With a $4k{\times}4k$ CCD camera, the telescope has a $2.35{\times}2.35deg$ field-of-view. Currently, it is equipped with Johnson UBVRI filters and 3 narrow-band filters: $H{\alpha}$, OIII and SII. We will present the installation process, and the telescope performance such as detection limit and image quality based on the data from commissioning observations. We will also discuss possible scientific projects with this system.

  • This paper presents a high-speed flash analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for ultra wide band (UWB) receivers. In this flash ADC, the interpolating technique is adopted to reduce the number of the amplifiers and a linear and wide-bandwidth interpolating amplifier is presented. For this ADC, the transistor size for the cascaded stages is inversely scaled to improve the trade-off in bandwidth and power consumption. The active inductor peaking technique is also employed in the pre-amplifiers of comparators and the track-and-hold circuit to enhance the bandwidth. Furthermore, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is embedded for the sake of measurements. This chip has been fabricated in $0.13{\mu}m$ 1P8M CMOS process and the total power consumption is 113mW with 1V supply voltage. The ADC achieves 4-bit effective number of bits (ENOB) for input signal of 200MHz at 5-GSample/sec.

  • In this paper, the performance of the UWB communication systems is analyzed in the presence of the Narrow Band Interference(NBI). UWB communication systems are modeled as using the Pulse Position Modulation(PPM). In this system, a Gaussian monocycle is used as the received pulses. The NBI is considered as a zero-mean random process with a constant spectral power density over its whole bandwidth. We obtain the mathematical expressions for describing the effect of the NBI on the UWB system. And it can be shown that the suppression of the effect of NBI on the UWB systems is available by adjusting the PPM related parameter.

  • The demand for steady and dependable power sources is very high in the field of sustainable energy because of the limited amount of fossil fuels reserves. Among several sustainable alternatives, solar energy may be the most efficient solution because it constitutes the largest renewable energy source. So far, the only practical way to store such large amounts of energy has been to use a chemical energy carrier likewise a fuel. In various solar energy to power conversion systems, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen by the direct use of solar energy is an ideal process. It is a renewable method of hydrogen production integrated with solar energy absorption and water electrolysis using a single photoelectrode. Previous studies on photoelectrode films for PEC water splitting cells have been mainly focused on synthesizing oxide semiconductors with wide band gaps, such as TiO2(3.2eV), WO3(2.8eV), and Fe2O3(2.3eV). Unfortunately, these pristine oxide photoanodes without any catalysts have relatively low photocurrent densities because of the inherent limitation of insufficient visible light absorption due to the wide bandgap. Specifically, there is a tradeoff between high photocurrent and photoelectrochemical corrosion behavior, which is representative of figures of meritf or PEC materials.
