Wicked Problems and Social Innovation on Design Perspective -Focused on the Word Definition and Case Study Research- (디자인영역에서의 불명확한 난제(Wicked Problem)와 사회적 혁신 연구 -용어 정의와 사례를 중심으로-)

  • A 'wicked problem' is something that is hard to notice and not easy to perceive. This study focuses on understanding the precise concept of wicked problem through studying the background that led to the introduction of the term wicked problem. On the other hand, for social innovation, which has recently become a hot topic, it is necessary to identify wicked problem. Social innovation means solving in an innovative way that is more effective, efficient and sustainable than existing ones. As the beneficiary is not an individual but a society, it is in line with the field covered by wicked problem. Therefore, the study introduces a case in which wicked problems are solved through novel ways, that is, design thinking. Through the case study, it was confirmed that design thinking helps identifying problems that are not revealed and contributes to social innovation. As a result, we hope that this research will contribute to help solve the problems that we need to resolve in our society by using design thinking.

Structured Group Interaction System for Collaborative Problem Solving (협업 방식의 문제 해결을 위한 그룹원 간의 구조적 대화 지원 시스템)

  • These days we come across many wicked problems whose solutions are beyond individuals intellectual ability. These problems can be resolved through collaborative group interaction. We developed an internet-based asynchronous group interaction support system, after looking into the collaborative problem solving process and the IBIS (Issue-Based Information System) argumentation model. It has the following characteristics ; 1) it is developed based on the modified IBIS model which is a model for group interaction to resolve wicked problems ; 2) it supports both processes of seeking and comparing solutions, while most similar systems do not have a feature to support the latter process ; 3) different structures can be defined dynamically according to the purpose of group interaction, so that it could be used for collaborative problem solving in a specific domain. To show the usability of the system, we carried out an experiment, whose result is shown at the end.

Framing Instead of Solving: Approaching the Wicked problem of Restaurant Food Waste through Service Design Research (해결대신 프레이밍: 서비스 디자인 연구를 통해음식점 음식물쓰레기라는 난제에 접근)

  • The hospitality and food service sector is the food sector that generates the most food waste. To deliver a more sustainable service, the food service industry needs to understand and reduce customer plate waste, which is mostly avoidable. Several studies have investigated the drivers of plate waste behaviors and proposed mitigations. However, service designers need actionable insights that inspire innovative solutions. The goals of this study are twofold. The first goal is to identify factors influencing young consumers' food waste behavior in restaurants. The second goal is to frame food waste challenges as design opportunities for service designers. A photo diary was conducted with 10 Korean university students. Participants took before and after photos of two meals and fill out questionnaires. The questions include personal background, considerations when choosing a meal, satisfaction with the meal, and reasons for leaving food. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analyzed. The results suggest that lack of awareness and control are the key drivers of leftovers. The food waste problem is framed into "How Might We" design opportunities for service design. Interventions should focus on improving communication with oneself, dining partners, and restaurants. The paper contributes by demonstrating the service design research approach to framing wicked problems with the example of restaurant food waste.

  • In creative design, it is necessary to understand the characteristic of architectural design. In the world of design problem, a distinction can be made between those that are well-defined and those that are ill-defined. Well-defined problems are those for which the ends or goal, are already prescribed and apparent, their solution requires the provision of appropriate means. For ill-defined problems, on the other hand, both the ends and the means of solution are unknown at the outset of the problem solving exercise, at least in their entirety. Most of design problems is ill-defined, which is unknown at the beginning of the problem solving exercise. In order to solve the design problem, Designers take advantage of the search methods of problem space, such as global-search-methods(depth-first-methods, breath-first-methods), local-search-methods(generate and test, heuristics, hill-climbing, reasoning) and visual thinking, which is represented through sketching. Sketching is a real part of design reasoning and it does so through a special kind of visual imagery. Also in the design problem solving it have been an important means of problem exploration and solution generation. By sketching, they represent images held in the mind as well as makes graphic images which help generate mental images of entity that is being designed. The search methods of problem space and a visual thinking have been crucially considered in the architectural design. The purpose of this paper is to explore the property of design by means of the pre-existed-experiment data and literature research. The findings will help design the architectural design for more creative results.

The Problem of Theodicy in Daesoon Jinrihoe (대순진리회에서 신정론 문제)

  • This study aims to explain theodicy in Daesoon Jinrihoe using established theodicies. Theodicy in Daesoon Jinrihoe can be described as follows: within the worldview of Daesoon Jinrihoe, the problems of evil and suffering are better addressed by analyzing the problem of mutual contention. Accordingly, theodicy in Daesoon Jinrihoe is a matter which should be discussed only in regards to the time period known as the Former World and the transition period after the Reordering Works that leads up to the Later World. The Later World does not operate under patterns of mutual contention. Consequently, there will be no suffering. Therefore, issues of theodicy are irrelevant in the Later World. Theodicy should be dealt differently as it pertains to the Former World and the previously mentioned transition period. Daesoon Thought posits that there is an underlying principle presides over the cosmos, and the divine beings act in accordance with it and perform specific duties in their own subdivisions. The cosmic principle is able to contain cycles of both Sanggeuk ('mutual destruction' in general usage, but 'mutual contention' in Daesoon Thought related to the Former World) and sangsaeng ('mutual generation' in general usage and 'mutual beneficence' in Daesoon Thought related to the Later World). Suffering came into being due to mutual contention. However, mutual contention was not set into motion maliciously, but was arranged instead to facilitate the realization of greater values such as growth and development. In other words, mutual contention are not products of a moral value the nature of which is bad or wrong. Yet, since the world has operated under mutual contention from time immemorial, a nearly incalculably vast multitude of grievances have accumulated. In addition, the divine beings who had operated under mutual contention often made mistakes and spread confusion. This extreme situation resulted in tremendous disasters breaking out all over the world. Perhaps this particular theodicy could be named "Dualistic Sanggeuk Theology (Dualistic Theodicy of Mutual Contention)." After the divine beings reported to the Supreme God that the world had fallen into a serious crisis, the Supreme God penetratingly examined the circumstances of the world and then descended to Earth as a human being named Jeungsan. As Jeungsan practiced the Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth, the Great Opening was preordained by Him. As a result, the transition period started, and from that point onward, theodicy should be described differently. It is presumed that all creatures will be judged at the time of the Great Opening. This will result in the annihilation of all wicked beings including both divine beings and humans. There will also be the establishment of an earthly paradise as well as grievance resolution for all beings prior the Great Opening. This can also be called "The Eschatological Theodicy of the Resolution of Grievances." Theodicy in Daesoon Jinrihoe adopts the two theodicies mentioned above. In addition to that, various theodicies from other traditions such as Irenaean ("soul-making") Theodicy, Free Will Theodicy, Recompense Theodicy, Afterlife Theodicy, Karma Samsara Theodicy, theodicy of participation, and Communion Theodicy can all potentially be applied on a case by case basis.
