A Study on Policies for the Activation of WiBro Market (와이브로 시장 활성화를 위한 정책 방안 연구)

  • This study first attempted to point out fundamental reasons behind the failure to have WiBro services off the saddle, investigating the previous studies, and second to screen the WiBro promotion policies after reviewing the major steps conducted thus far by the government. In order to put the screened policies in order by the importance, an AHP analysis was conducted targeting WiBro professionals in various fields such as government offices, universities, research institutes, and industry. One step further, causal loop diagramming on the system dynamics methodology was conducted to examine the dynamic structure of the WiBro market in holistic standpoint of view. Finally, a simulation model was developed based on the causal loop diagrams and the results of the AHP analysis in order to examine how various policy scenarios influence the growth of the WiBro market over time, and to compare the mix of policy options. Finally, the study attempted to draw some implications for WiBro vitalization.

Relationship between Service-Related Activities, Service Capability and Market Diffusion: Case of WiBro

  • The market performance of WiBro in Korea has not been as expected, and its rapid diffusion in the near future is unlikely owing to the existence of competing services. There has been little research on the factors affecting this low market diffusion. This study is based on an analytical framework in which a lack of service capability and the insufficiency of service-related activities have resulted in the current poor market performance. An expert survey was conducted on WiBro specialists and verified using the analytical hierarchy process method. The result of this analysis is as follows: underinvestment in network deployment and marketing, insufficient promotional policies, and a shortage of service capabilities are to be analyzed as the main causes of WiBro's low market diffusion.

  • This paper attempts to conceptually examine the factors affecting the growth potential of WiBro in the Korean communication market. The results of the paper implies that the WiBro service operators' business intentions mainly affect the its diffusion negatively and the convergence service combining WiBro with other heterogeneous service including Telematics services might enable WiBro to successfully grow compensating the current limitation of WiBro.

  • The technology of WiBro, combining advantages of high speed internet and wireless internet provides the effectiveness and convenience provided by broadband and convergence. WiBro has developed due to supports of the related industries. The advancement of WiBro have created driving force for network advancement. WiBro is a niche market among high speed Internet, wireless LAN, Mobile phone, wireless internet. Through building relationship between market share and the existed telecommunication service, WiBro could improve the convenience of users. The security controls have to be built considering vulnerabilities of WiBro. Based on the study, the architecture of WiBro was suggested through reviewing the vulnerabilities and security controls in the wireless network and wire network. The appropriate security measures to be applied in the environment of WiBro. The outcomes of the study could improve the usage of WiBro.

Price Competition in Horizontal and Vertical Differentiation : Focusing on the WiBro and HSDPA (수직적.수평적 차별화 시장에서의 서비스 요금전략 : 와이브로와 HSDPA 서비스를 중심으로)

  • In this paper, I analyze the mobile broadband services market characterized by vertical and horizontal differentiation. Vertical differentiation as service quality differentiation is based on the transmission speed of mobile internet service and horizontal differentiation as spatial differentiation is based on the service coverage. Theoretical explanations for the competitive price policy have been developed in the game context of WiBro which represent the high quality within the limited service coverage and HSDPA which represent relatively low quality with nation-wide service. When the WiBro has a mobile broadband service quality advantage and the difference in quality is sufficiently low, the price of WiBro with limited service coverage is relatively lower than that of HSDPA. This occurs because the advantage of WiBro's vertical service differentiation is offset by the disadvantage of horizontal differentiation. The difference in the quality of mobile internet service, however, is not too high, the price of WiBro is relatively higher than that of HSDPA. Moreover, when the service quality of WiBro is sufficiently high, the low quality HSDPA service faces no demand.

  • In the world each bureau tries an introduction of Mobile WiMAX frequency in the various band. Particularly, 2.5 GHz band is likely to be used as the future mobile telecommunication using as the IMT-2000 additional band which determined in WRC, and it comes into the spotlight as the band of the global radio broadband service including the Mobile WiMAX. Thus, the activity for including the Mobile WiMAX to the IMT-2000 technical standard is unfolded for the WiBro market development in the ITU-R WP8F conference, and the adoption or rejection will be finally determined in the ITU-R RA-07. Therefore, this paper tried to look for the plan for reaction according to the IMT-2000 standard acceptance of WiBro technology and the foreign usage plan of 2.5 GHZ band.

  • 삼성전자와 한국전자통신연구원이 공동으로 기술개발에 성공하여 2006년 6월 국내에서 세계 최초로 서비스를 개시한 WiBro는 최대 전송속도 하향 75Mbps($2{\times}2$ MIMO)/상향 50Mbps($1{\times}n$ MIMO), 시속 250km/h로 이동하면서 사용할 수 있는 기술이다. 2011년 1분기 기준 전세계 90개국 195개 사업자가 WiBro 서비스를 제공 또는 준비 중인데, 최근 대규모 WiBro 사업자인 러시아 Yota와 미국 Clearwire가 LTE로의 전환 가능성을 시사하는 등 글로벌 WiBro 사업에 대한 위기감이 나타나고 있다. 본 고에서는 국내외의 WiBro의 시장 현황 및 전망을 살펴보고, 국내로의 시사점을 모색해보고자 한다.

The Economic Value of Next-Generation Converged Communications and Broadcasting Services

  • This research is to substantially analyze the economic value of portable Internet (WiBro), WCDMA High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), WiBro+VoIP, and WiBro+DMB regarded as the next generation of broadcasting. Based on the empirical analysis of economic values, we provide the optimal paths of converged communications and broadcasting services related to WiBro. 1,000 Internet users in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas were surveyed in their homes. The collected survey was calculated as an accurate economic value distribution for relevant services, and the average and mean were taken using a parametric logit model, semi-parametric Spike model, and nonparametric Turnbull and Kernel estimations in order to analyze the contingent economic value of the amount offered to the subjects of the analysis. The contingent value analysis results varied slightly according to the different methodologies; however, all showed the following common features. The economic value of WiBro, Internet-based WCDMA, VoIP, and DMB with WiBro appeared to be similar. Therefore, if WiBro and WCDMA (HSDPA) form a competitive relationship, the types of bundled services offered as portable Internet service and the supply point of such bundled services are expected to emerge in a strategic plan for stimulating service markets and the prior occupation of the market.

  • Given the rapid changes in consumer tastes, technology, and competition, companies must develop a steady stream of new products and services. To be a successful product or service and explore the available market, the target market consumers need to be fully acknowledged a new product or service's value or benefit. And at the same time, the presented benefit should satisfy the customer's needs and wants. Therefore, a firm must investigate the target consumers' needs and wants before launching the new product or service. In this paper, we suggest the marketing strategy for newly developed WiBro service in telecommunication industry. We focus on consumer-oriented marketing strategy as well as the technology development process. To explore the customer's value scheme, we employ a self-explicated approach for estimating the customer's part-worth of the different target market in the process of market development stage. And we present the marketing strategy for each market development stages as well.
