  • This research was designed to study the Korean dress design trends and different kinds of ancient patterns applied to the Korean dresses in 2001. The trend sources were collected by the HANBOK monthly journal and the symbolism of patterns associated with these patterns being used the prevalent Korean dress collection in markets. The results of the research can be summarized as following; The most of Korean dress image was elegant of ancient mode. Main colors of the traditional Korean jacket were white, yellowish white and green. However, main color of the traditional Korean skirt was represented as red. A plant pattern was the most popular pattern in a practical purpose. It looks beautiful and it is also easily manufactured with open space. Copying other patterns definitely damage the elegance of the Korean dress. It is time for us to not only keep our own traditions but also study and develop new patterns. Designers must study to develop the image and patterns which are agreed with consumer's taste.

  • High resolution spectroscopy of the yellow symbiotic star AG Draconis is performed with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to analyse the line profiles of Raman scattered O VI broad emission features at $6825{\AA}$ and $7082{\AA}$ with a view to investigating the wind accretion process from the mass losing giant to the white dwarf. These two spectral features are formed through inelastic scattering of O $VI{\lambda}{\lambda}32$ and 1038 with atomic hydrogen. We find that these features exhibit double-component profiles with red parts stronger than blue ones with the velocity separation of ~ 60 km s-1 in the O VI velocity space. Monte Carlo simulations for O VI line radiative transfer are performed by assuming that the O VI emission region constitutes a part of the accretion flow around the white dwarf and that Raman O VI features are formed in the neutral part of the slow stellar wind from the giant companion. The overall Raman O VI profiles are reasonably fit with an azimuthally asymmetric accretion flow and the mass loss rate ~ 4 ${\times}$ 10^{-7} M_sun yr^{-1}. We also find that additional bipolar neutral regions moving away with a speed ~ 70 km s^{-1} in the directions perpendicular to the orbital plane provide considerably improved fit to the red wing parts of Raman features.

  • Recently, with the development of hardware and software technology related with image information delivery, the demand for various multimedia service has increased. But, the process of treating, sending, and storing image signals generates image degradation by various external causes. The main cause of image degradation is noise. image is mostly damaged by AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise). Therefore, there have been active researches on noise elimination. This paper, to reduce the effects of AWGN added to the image, suggests a noise-eliminating algorithm which is excellent in low-frequency and high-frequency characteristics in space. And, this paper, through simulation techniques, compared the result of the suggested algorithm with those of the existing methods. And, to evaluate the performance of it, PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) was used.

  • Under the condition of femtosecond impulsive nonlinear optical irradiation, the bright and narrowed blue emission of silicon nanocrystal was observed. This synthetic method produced very small (~ 4 nm) oxide-capped silicon nanocrystal having probably ultra small emitting core (~ 1 nm) inferred from luminescence. By controlling the stirring condition, very high efficiencies of luminescence ( 4 fold higher) were obtained compared with the other conventional femtosecond laser fragmentation methods, which was attributed to the differences in hydration shell structure during the femtosecond laser induced irreversible phase transition reaction. When we properly adjusted the irradiation times of the white light continuum and stirring condition, very homogeneous luminescent silicon nanocrystal bands having relatively sharp lineshape were obtained, which can be attributable to the luminescent core site isolated and free from the surface defects.

  • A 12-year-old female small-clawed Asian otter (Anoyx cinereus) with a one-week history of anorexia, chills, and abdominal distension was found dead. Grossly, yellowish-brown turbid fluids accumulated in abdominal cavity of the otter, and yellowish thread-like fibrinous materials were found on the surface of abdominal organs. Several variable sized yellowish-white crystalloids were scattered on the medullary space of kidneys. Histologically, diffuse serositis (peritonitis) characterized by the fibrinous exudates, thickened serosal capsule and the swelling of mesothelial cells were observed in the serosa of liver, spleen, stomach, and intestine. Multifocal necrosis, hemorrhage, infiltration of macrophage, and brown pigments were presented in the liver. Isolated bacteria from ascites and fibrinous materials in abdominal visceral surface were white, smooth and convex with characteristic mousy odor on blood agar plate. These bacteria were confirmed as Pasteurella (P.) multocida type A by polymerase chain reaction analysis. Based on the gross examination, histopathologic findings and bacterial experiments, this otter was diagnosed as severe peritonitis associated with P. multocida and necrotic hepatitis.

  • This paper presents a novel optimization-based saliency-preserving method for converting color images to grayscale in a manner consistent with conventional approaches of black-and-white photographers. In black-and-white photography, a colored filter called a contrast filter has been commonly employed on a camera to lighten or darken selected colors. In addition, local exposure controls such as dodging and burning techniques are typically employed in the darkroom process to change the exposure of local areas within the print without affecting the overall exposure. Our method seeks a digital version of a conventional contrast filter to preserve visually-important image features. Furthermore, conventional burning and dodging techniques are addressed, together with image similarity weights, to give edge-aware local exposure control over the image space. Our method can be efficiently optimized on GPU. According to the experiments, CUDA implementation enables 1 megapixel color images to be converted to grayscale at interactive frames rates.

  • Acute delayed neurotoxicity of KH-502 [O.O-Diethyl O-(1-phenyyl-3-trifluoromethyl-5-pyrazoyl) thiophosphoric acid ester], an insecticide synthesized newly in Korea, was studied in White Leghorn hens. The doses were determined on the basis of preliminary $LD_{50}$ study. High, middle and low doses were determined to be 1123 mg/kg, 762 mg/kg and 518 mg/kg, respectively. The animals were pretreated with atropine (30 mg/kg) prior to administration of KH-502. The chemical was administrated at the first and 21st day of the study. As positive controls, animals were admlnistrated with triorthocresylphosphate (TOCP 1000 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg). Animals administrated with TOCP or KH-502 were sacrificed by perfusion-fixation at 21st and 42nd day of the study, respectively. The central and peripheral nerve tissues were routinely treated for microscopic observation. As results, eight, three, one, and one chickens died within 2 day after adminiatration with signs of cholinergic acute toxicity in high, middle low and TOCP dose-group (500 mg/kg), respectively. No abnormal clinical signs were observed in the survived chickens administrated with KH-502 in the duration of the study. The chickens in positive control groups showed ataxia and incoordination at the 14th day after administration of TOCP. From necropsy, macroscopic changes were not observed in all groups including positive control groups. Histopathologically, oxonal swelling with myelin loss, focal gliosis, distention around axonal space were observed in the spinal cords of the chickens administrated with TOCP 1000 mg/kg. The lesions were distinct in the dorsal and lateral funiculi of cervical spinal cord, in the lateral and ventral funiculi of thoracic spinal cord and in ventral funiculi of lumbosacral spinal cord. Axonal swelling and mlcrogliosis were infrequently observed in the chickens of other groups including negative control one. However, they were nonspecifically distributed in the spinal cords. In this study, we concluded that the new chemical, KH-502 did not have acute delayed neurotoxicity in White Leghorn hens.

  • A search for hot and bright white dwarfs (WDs) in the Milky Way globular clusters M13 (NGC 6205) and M22 (NGC 6656) is carried out using the deep and homogeneous V I photometric catalog of Anderson et al. and and Sarajedini et al., based on data taken with the ACS/WFC aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). V versus V − I color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of M13 and M22 are constructed and numerous spurious detections are rejected according to their photometric quality parameters qfit(V ) and qfit(I). In the case of M13, further radial restriction is applied to reject central stars with higher photometric errors due to central crowding. From each resultant V versus V −I CMD, sixteen and thirteen WD candidates are identified in M13 and M22, respectively. They are identified as stellar objects in the accompanying ACS/WFC images and are found to be randomly distributed across the central regions of M13 and M22. Their positions in the CMDs are in the bright part of the DA WD cooling sequences indicating that they are true WDs. In order to confirm their nature, follow-up spectroscopic observations are needed.
