  • Abrasive wear characteristics of high Cr white cast iron-based hardfacing were investigated using the rubber wheel abrasion wear test method according with the ASTM G65-85. Mild steel was also tested for comparison with high Cr cast iron hardfacing. Wear experiments, where the applied force, wheel revolution rate and abrasive powder feed rate were selected as test valuables, were planned and analyzed by response surface method to evaluate wear statistically and quantitatively. Weight loss of high Cr cast iron hardfacing was mostly affected by the applied force and wheel revolution rate, and little by the powder feed rate. Weight loss of mild steel was greatly affected by the wheel revolution rate and powder feed rate, and slowly and steadily increased with the applied force. Abrasive wear mechanism of high Cr cast iron and mild steel was discussed in the light of the wear test results.

  • An experimental investigation on the wear of alumina grinding wheel is presented. The experiments consist of the measurements of fracture strength of the abrasive grains, grinding forces, and the area of wear flats of grinding wheels. Microscopic examinations of abrasive grains were also carried out to observe the progress of wheel wear. the results show that the 32A grain, which has relatively lower fracture strength, wears out faster than 5SS and 5SG. The wheel wear occurs much faster in wet grinding than in dry grinding. It has also been found that the grinding forces increase logarithmically with increasing wear flats.

  • Through the previous works, it was found that the laminated grinding wheel is more efficient to generate smoother surface in short time than general grinding wheels. But, if the laminated grinding wheel is easily worn-out, it is impossible to apply this wheel in the real grinding process, because the periodic time for dressing is closely linked to the productivity of the process. So, it is required to investigate the wear of the laminated grinding wheel fer studying the periodic time for dressing. But it is difficult to analyze the dressing period quantitavely. Therefore, in this study, periodic times for dressing of the laminated grinding wheel and general grinding wheel are deduced from the relationship between the wear of grinding wheels and the surface roughness changes according to the number of traverse in cylindrical traverse grinding through experiments. This study shows that there are some differences in the wheel wear mechanisms between the general and laminated grinding wheels. As a result, it is also found that the periodic time for dressing of the laminated grinding wheel is longer than that of the general grinding wheel.

  • Wheel and rail wear is a fundamental and complicate problem in railway field. The life of railway is usually limited by wear. The wheel surface is subjected to high normal and tangential contact stress. The removal of material from the surface by wear is function of the sliding and contact stress. In the present paper, the wear characteristic depended on slip rate, contact pressure and temperature are investigated and is used to twin disc tester. The result shows that the wear in wheel-rail interface is remarkably depended on slip rate and contact pressure.

  • To apply the wear resistant steel plate for heavy duty vehicle, the wear characterisms of various kinds of commercial steel plates were invesigated by dry sand/rubber wheel tester which was tested under scratch abrasion mode. The wear tested pnaterials were boron steels which were manufactured by thereto machanical control process (TMCP) in order to achieve higher hardness. As the result of the test, wear resistance of steel plate increases with the hardness and carbon content. The wear loss of wear resistance steel plate (Hv440) is a half times than tinat of SWS490A (Hv160) steel plate in dry sand-rubber wheel test and the result in field test is similar to this dry sand/rubber wheel test result. Therefore, dry sand/rubber wheel tester can be used to predict the scratch abrasion life of the parts for heavy duty vehicle.

  • Rolling contact fatigue and wear on rails are inevitable in railway operations due to excessive wheel-rail contact stress. The wear is influenced by vehicle speed, contact pressure, environmental conditions, and many other factors. Speeding on a curved track causes many problems such as wear on the gauge of the rail and rolling contact fatigue. Managing environmental conditions can reduce problems on the wheel and rail interface. In this study, the wear characteristics of wheel and rail materials were investigated by twin-disc testing using various parameters. The results of the wear test indicated that the wear rate under dry conditions was larger than that under wet conditions. We found that contact fatigue damage occurred on the rail in dry conditions, however, the surface of the specimen under water remained smooth. Also, the friction coefficient in dry conditions was larger than in wet conditions.

  • This paper deals with the theoretical estimation and its experimental verification of grinding wheel wear in surface grinding process. A theoretical formulation is provided to predict the grinding wheel wear in surface grinding. To validate the theoretical prediction, the grinding wheel wear is measured by using a laser scanning micrometer. The associated surface roughness and grinding farce are also investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Through a series of simulations and experiments, it is shown that the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper deals with monitoring of grinding wheel wear in grinding process. A monitoring system is developed in which a laser scanning micrometer is used to measure the circumferential shape as well as the axial shape of grinding wheel. The monitoring system is applied to grinding machines. The experiment results show that the monitoring system is useful not only for monitoring the amount of wear in grinding wheel but also for measuring the apparent diameter of the grinding wheel.
