  • Hollows are easily made and bearing capacity is lowered near underground structures of concrete pavement because of poor compaction and long term settlement of the ground. Distresses occur and lifespan is shortened because of larger stress induced by external loadings expected than that in the design. In this paper, the distresses of the concrete pavement slab over box culverts were investigated at the Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) test road. The transverse cracking of the slabs over the culverts was compared between up and down lines with different soil cover depth. The box culvert without soil cover and concrete pavement were modeled and analyzed by the finite element method(FEM) to verify the transverse cracking at the test road. Wheel loading was applied after self weight of the pavement and temperature gradient of the concrete slab at Yeojoo, Gyeonggi where the test road is located were considered. Positions of maximum tensile stress and corresponding positions of the wheel loading were found for each loading combination. Joint position minimizing the maximum tensile stress was found and optimal slab length over the culverts with diverse size were suggested.

  • In this study, the problem formulation and solution technique using genetic algorithms for design optimization of laminate composite cylindrical beam section are presented. The hollow cylindrical beams we usually used in the wheel chair. If the weight of wheel chair is reduced, it will lead to huge improvement in passenger's mobility and comfort. In this context, the replacement of steel by high performance and light weight composite material along with optimal design will be a good contribution in the process of weight reduction of a wheel chair. An artificial genetics approach for the design optimization of hollow cylindrical composite beam is presented. On applying the genetic algorithm, the optimal dimensions of hollow cylindrical composite beams which have equivalent rigidities to those of corresponding hollow cylindrical steel beams are obtained. Also structural analysis is conducted on the entire wheel chair structure incorporating Tsai-Wu failure criteria. The maximum Tsai-Wu failure criteria index is $0.192\times10^{-3}$ which is moth less than value of 1.00 indicating no failure is observed under excessive loading condition. It is found that the substitution of steel by composite material could reduce the weight of wheel chair up to 45%.

  • Field or laboratory wheel tracking tests have been employed for the evaluation of the rutting potential of asphalt paving mixtures. Compared to field tests, laboratory wheel tracking tests are much less expensive and more manageable for most road projects. However, most test laboratories are not equipped to perform such tests because there does not exist any standard test procedure, and the required equipment is rather expensive. Futhermore, the size of test specimens and the relatively large quantity of test mixture required present difficulties for laboratory specimen mixing and compaction. This paper describes a project conducted to study the feasibility of replacing wheel tracking testsby a repeated-load creep test for rutting potential evaluation. Comparisons were made between the results of the two tests for different test temperatures, loading speeds and applied pressures. Three types of asphalt mixtures were studied in the test program. Favorable conclusions concerning the use of the repeated-load test for rutting potential evaluation were drawn based on the findings of the experimental test results. The correlation between the two types of tests was found to be good for all threeasphalt mixtures. Adopting the repeated-load creep test would lead to cost savings since it employs standard test equipment already available in most laboratories. It would also result in substantial time savings due to the much smaller quantity of mix needed, and the ease in specimen preparation.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to validate the design criteria of the concrete modular road system, which is a new semi-bridge-type concept road, through a comparison of numerical analysis results and actual loading test results under static axial loads. METHODS : To design the semi-bridge-type modular road, both the bridge design code and the concrete structural design code were adopted. The standard truck load (KL-510) was applied as the major traffic vehicle for the design loading condition. The dimension of the modular slab was designed in consideration of self-weight, axial load, environmental load, and combined loads, with ultimate limit state coefficients. The ANSYS APDL (2010) program was used for case studies of center and edge loading, and the analysis results were compared with the actual mock-up test results. RESULTS : A full-scale mock-up test was successfully conducted. The maximum longitudinal steel strains were measured as about 35 and 83.5 micro-strain (within elastic range) at center and edge loading locations, respectively, under a 100 kN dual-wheel loading condition by accelerating pavement tester. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of the comparison between the numerical analysis and the full-scale test, the maximum converted stress range at the edge location is 32~51% of the required standard flexural strength under the two times over-weight loading condition. In the case of edge loading, the maximum converted stresses from the Westergaard equation, the ANSYS APDL analysis, and the mock-up test are 1.95, 1.7, and 2.3 times of that of the center loading case, respectively. The primary reason for this difference is related to the assumption of the boundary conditions of the vertical connection between the slab module and the crossbeam module. Even though more research is required to fully define the boundary conditions, the proposed design criteria for the concrete modular road finally seems to be reasonable.

  • The wavelet transform is a popular tool for studying intermittent and localized phenomena in signals. In this study the wavelet transform of cutting force signals was conducted for the diagnosis of grinding conditions in grinding process. We used the Daubechies wavelet analyzing function to detect a sudden change in cutting signal level. STD11 workpiece was 85 times of machined pieces cut by the WA wheel and a tool dynamometer obtained cutting force signals. From the results of the wavelet transform, the obtained signals were divided into approximation terms and detailed terms. At dressing time, the approximation signals were slowly increased and 45 machined times noticed dressing time.

  • An automotive wheel bearing is one of the most important components to guarantee the service life of a passenger car. The endurance life of a bearing is affected by many parameters such as material properties, heat treatment, lubrication conditions, temperature, loading conditions, bearing geometry, internal clearance and so on. Generally, a tapered roller bearing gives longer endurance life than that of an equivalent size ball bearing. Consequently, the application of taper bearing units will be increased for more compact design and extended warranty. In this paper, we derive the relation between loads and deformations of a taper bearing unit. On the basis of that, we calculate the endurance life of the taper bearing unit considering initial axial clearance.

  • Automatic Transfer Crane is needed for automation of container terminal. It requires the control capability of exact position for loading/unloading job in yard. But it has the limitation of improvement because it has the operational environmental and its structural problems. It has the positioning errors caused by the deformation of rail, yawing motion of crane, wear of wheel, sliding motion between wheel and rail and so on. This study shows the calibration method of crane position by using the primitivity sensor and calibrating plate fixed on the ground.

  • In this study, the full scale model tests were performed with track-roadbed system such as Ho-nam high speed railway. The measured data gives good similar a roadbed pressure with equivalent depth to the Odemark's theory. In the case of earth pressures have a under 50 kPa at upper-subgrade applying 330 kN static loading. Results of cyclic loading tests did not differ significantly from those of static loading test. The elastic displacement at HSB layer has a level of 1/100 compared to the 1 mm that it was evaluation criteria for speed up of High Speed Railway. Elastic displacement at subgrade layer was measured a level of 1/175. The dynamic characteristics of track-roadbed with loading frequency level were linearly increased under 35 Hz, while the wheel loading, displacement and acceleration of roadbed were decreased loading frequency above 35 Hz.

  • Various perturbations by the sun, the moon and the earth itself cause a continuous change in nominal position of a geostationary satellite. In order to maintain the satellite within a required window, north-south station keeping for controlling inclination and right ascension of ascending node, and east-west station keeping for controlling eccentricity and longitude are required. In this paper, station keeping maneuver simulation for Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) was performed using COMS Flight Dynamics Software(FDS) and the results were analyzed. COMS performs weekly based east-west/north-south station keeping to maintain satellite within ${\pm}0.05^{\circ}$ at the nominal longitude of $128.2^{\circ}E$. In addition, COMS performs wheel off-loading maneuver twice a day to eliminate attitude error caused by one-solar wing in the south panel of the satellite. In this paper, station keeping maneuver considering wheel off-loading maneuver was performed and the results showed that COMS can be maintained well within ${\pm}0.05^{\circ}$ window using COMS FDS.

  • This study evaluated influence of the loading head dimension on characteristics of deformation strength ($S_D$) of asphalt mixtures. Kim test and Wheel tracking (WT) test were conducted to evaluate $S_D$ characteristics with relation to WT results for various mixtures. The $S_D$ values and coefficient of variation of $S_D$ values of r=10mm were smaller than those of r=10.5mm. It was also found that $S_D$ values obtained using r=10mm loading head showed high correlations with rut parameters of WT test. It was indicated that the aggregate size and radius (r) of round cut were statistically significant variables on $S_D$ at = 0.05 level in the analysis of variance. However, in interaction of r and aggregate size showed no significance within $10{\sim}19mm$ aggregate size at the same level. Therefore, it was concluded that the diameter (D) of 40mm and the bottom edge radius (r) of 10mm was suitable dimension of loading head for deformation strength test.
