  • The species and size compositions of fishes in the coastal waters off Taean were determined using samples collected with a two-sided fyke net in 2008. A total of 22 species, 2,371 individuals and 1,351 kg of fish were collected during the study. Of the fish collected, semi-benthic fishes such as Sebastes schlegelii, Mugil cephalus and Chelon haematocheilus were the most abundant (77.5% and 76.4% for total number of individuals and biomass, respectively). Benthic fishes such as Pleuronectus yokohamae and Paralichthys olivaceus were collected in almost all seasons but were low in abundance (5.3% and 4.1% for total number of individuals and biomass, respectively). Seasonal migrants were plentiful; specifically, Seriola quinqueradiata was abundant in November while Konosirus punctaus was common in July. Seasonal migrants of small-sized fish have been known to be abundant in the coastal water of western Korea including the study area, but few fish less than 100 mm were collected due to the large mesh size (30 mm) of the net used.

  • The tides in the Saemanguem Area, the western coast of Korea have been examined based on simulations with barotropic depth-integrated model. As a first step tidal computations were performed with open-boundary sea level forcing from four major constitutents ($M_2$, $S_2$, $K_1$, and $O_1$). Subsequently the established model was utilized to investigate the effect of construction of tidal barriers for Saemanguem development plan on the existing tidal regime. It has been shown that tide of semi-diurnal constituents may be reduced to 2-7 cm in amplitude along the frontal area of proposed barrier. In connection with above changes the tidal current regime may be subjected to significant reduction in intensity. thus suggesting the high possibility of sedimentation along the frontal region of tidal barrier.

  • Ansan city in the coastal area of the mid-western Korea is known as a newly industrialized city(73.44$Km^2$, 127, 000 persons), with the increase rate of 27.8% in population and mean density of 1, 732 persons/$Km^2$. According to the census of the city(1986), it consists of cultivated field(36.8%), forest(34.2%), industrial area(7.4%), residential area(4.1%) and others(12.5%). The forest vegetation in the city is composed of four associations and two subassociations as follows; Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora-Rhododendron mucronulatum, Quercus mongolica-Rhododendron mucronulatum and Robinia pseudo-acacia asociation, and Quercus mongolica-Corylus sieboldiana var. mandshurica and Robinia pseudoacacia-Alnus hirsuta subassociation. Various environmental conditions have been changed with the progress of urbanization of the city, since 1977. For example, a heat island phenomenon, which is the air temperature of 2 or 3$^{\circ}C$ higher in the central area than that of the boundary area, and floral changes caused by air pollutants such as decreasing bryophyte species along increasing SO$_2$ concentration.

  • The studies on the carotenoids in the viscera the brine shrimp(Penaeus Orientalis Kishinouye) have been carried out. The brine shrimps were caught around the western coastal area of Korea from Aug. to Oct. The individual carotenoids in the acetone extracts were separated and purified by the silica gel TLC. Two isolated carotenoids were investigated and identified by epoxide test, partition test, alkaline hydrolysis, reduction with sodium borohydride and visible absorption spectrophqtometry. As the results of the series of experiments, esterified Astaxanthin was discovered as one of main pigments of Penaeus Orientalis Kishinouye.

  • In this study, we determined the correlation between the wave characteristics and the change in the area of Haeundae Beach, conducted regression analysis between the wave characteristics and the change in beach area, and derived a formula for calculating the change in beach area. The change in beach area was calculated by applying the derived formula to wave observation data corresponding to a period of approximately 10 months, and the formula was subsequently validated by comparing the obtained results with the observed area. It is found that the error associated with the formula for calculating the change in beach area ranges from 1.5 m to 2.7 m based on the average beach width, and the correlation coefficient corresponding to the observed area ranges from 0.91 to 0.94. Furthermore, it is observed that the change in beach area is af ected by the wave direction in the western zone, wave height in the central zone, and wave height and wave period in the eastern zone. These results can contribute to understanding the impact of a coastal improvement project on the beach area fluctuation characteristics of Haeundae Beach and the ef ectiveness of such a coastal improvement project. By applying the aforementioned derived formula to highly accurate wave prediction data, the change in beach area can be calculated and incorporated for predicting significant long-term changes in beach areas. Furthermore, such a prediction can be considered as the basis for making decisions while establishing preemptive countermeasure policies to prevent coastal erosion.

  • Distribution and occurrence of swimming crab, Portunus trituberculatus larvae were investigated in the mid-western coast of Korea in the Yellow Sea. P. trituberculatus larvae were collected in July and August from 2010 to 2012. Bongo net with 303 mesh was deployed once with a double oblique tow. Zoea I (ZI) densities were highest in all sampling months. Then densities of later larval stages decreased dramatically. In general, larval densities at the stations in northern parts and coastal areas were higher than those at the southern and offshore area. Because egg bearing seasons of P. trituberculatus in the study area are between April and August, larval densities, particularly, of ZI may be underestimated. Considering higher densities of ZI and lower ones of later stages, larvae may be transported to growing area and returned to the parental populations. Larval densities and sea surface temperature were not correlated.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of meterological factors on oceanic conditions when cold and dry continental air mass passes through the western sea of Korea The change of ocean conditions during the winter season were more obvious in coastal area than open sea And sea surface temperature (SST) during February is lower by $3^{\circ}C$ than December but in coastal area SST dropped by $3^{\circ}C$. As for the salinity, there was not much difference between areas except southern area of Mokpo. In the coastal regions, air temperature(AT) and SST showed a positive correlation; as the air temperature goes up with the increase of SST and when the former goes down the latter decrease. SST of open sea seems to be changed by latent (Qe) and sensible heat (Qs), when the open sea lose its heat by Qe and Qs then SST goes down And when they get the heat then the SST goes up. 1here was a positive correlation between the AT of the coastal region and sea surface salinity (SSS), when the AT goes up then SSS increase and when the former goes down the latter decrease. Precipitation during the summer seasons (June$\sim$September) appeared to the more closely related with salinity of February of the following year than those of October and December.

  • The Kyunggi Bay (125-l28E, 36-38N) is a macro-tidal bay in the western central port of Korean Peninsula(Fig. 1). The Bay characterizes its feature as wide tidal flats, deep tidal channels and tidal sand ridges running in parallel to tidal flows. The macro-tidal range (up to approximately 8.6m) and consequent strong tidal currents erode the bottom sediment and selectively transport to the low-energy area forming tidal ridges or tidal flats. • This study was conducted to find out the effects of relationship between ocean-meteorological factors and snowfall at Incheon, Gunsan and Mokpo when cold and dry continental air mass passed through the West Sea of Korea in winter. Mean snowfall from December to February showed the order of Gunsan (12.7 cm), Mokpo (9.0 cm) and Incheon (7.8 cm). In particular, the snowfall in the three regions showed the regional difference in December and February. It was well consistent with the extension of continental high. Extension of continental high can cause effect on snowfall at the west regions (Inchoen, Gunsan, Mokpo) of the Korean Peninsula. The continental high extended from the southern China to western coastal region of the Korean Peninsula in December, it extended from the northern China to central area of the Korean Peninsula in January. It also extended from the north side of China through Bohai Sea and Yodong Peninsula to central area of the Korean Peninsula in February. Therefore, more snowfall recorded in Incheon is higher in February than December whereas Gunsan and Mokpo is the opposite. The heavy snowfall at the three regions was caused by loss of the heat from the ocean to air when the heat loss was higher than 100 $W/m^2$. The heavy snowfall was also observed when the arrangement of continental high atmospheric pressure and low pressure was high at the west and low at the east, which formed a front in West and when the wind blow from the North or North West at the speed of 4${\sim}$8 m/sec.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of dry-wet treatment on well developed tidal flats along the complex coastal line in the western part of Korean Peninsula, we adopted a finite element tidal hydrodynamic simulation model, ADCIRC incorporating newly suggested dry-wet option and applied it to Chonbuk coastal area and Keum river estuary. Model comparison with observed current data by RMS error in the Chonbuk area shows very good agreement within 1cm/sec of tidal velocity difference and 3% of error to maximum tidal currents. However there is not seen any significant advantages in dry-wet treatment. For the tidal volume tests in the Keum river estuary, the differences are satisfied within 5% nevertheless of dry-wet treatment but in a near cross section it marks over 20%. However both results are almost same in tidal residual tests. Thus it can be concluded that dry-wet option is not always necessary in the simulation of long-term dispersion analysis.
