  • The tradition of architecture in the East and the West are different in many ways. One of the basic cause of such difference, however, is the different ways of perception of space and time. This paper aims to identify the attitude of perception of space and time in the cultures of the East and the West, and its influence on architecture. Degrees of importance placed on either space or time, as well as the modes of perception of space and time are discussed in relation to architecture. Basically, the architecture of the West seems to be more spatially oriented than the East, and this have much to do with the fact that the tradition of Western architecture is visually oriented. On the other hand, East Asian architecture have been more conscious on bodily feeling and its movement in architecture. Spatial units of traditional Eastern architecture, are arranged in such a way in which man can experience the change of space that is supposed to be organized to form a sequential message. Thus, in the East, temporal dimension is more deliberately included in the course of architectural experience compared to the cases of the West. Although it is not easy to attempt any kind of value judgment on such aspects, it is necessary to understand how the different perception of space and time influenced architectural outcome, especially when one wants to understand the cultural cause that have made the architectures of the East and the West very different. Such understanding is particularly important in East Asia where their future of architecture depends much on how they harmonize the Eastern and Western background which are already built up as two cultural structure in their consciousness to be able to create more desirable architecture for themselves.

The modern domestic architecture of Taegu province had been constructed greatly by the missonaries and Japanes. The history of development of modern houses in Teagu province can be devided into three period in accordance with the economic policy, housing style and the method of construction. The first period (1886-1910) was the beginning of the modern house. Most of the mission houses of that period were made with brick structure of korean-western style or colonial style. In the second period (1911-1926), colonial, Japanese-western, Japanese housing style were co-exited in Teagu province. • This paper aims at understanding the transformed characteristics of expressional system of Church architecture in Korean traditional style. Through the analysis of transformed forms and its meanings of those, this paper investigates the unique process of stylistic development of Korean traditional church architecture in early modern, 1900's. The method of this study is the analyse of them after the actual field surveys of Korean traditional churches, specially eclecticism churches as the HWSAN church and KUPODONG church, and the analysis of Semiology. Theory for Semantic Interpretation of artistic objects as an objects of art and architecture. Specially, the survey concentrates on the architectural elements(the form, the architectural structure, the material, the roof shape, the window, the door, the bell tower, the plan, etc) of eclecticism churches, especially those of HWASAN church and the analysis of semiology theory contains the research results which were studied by theorists as Charles Jencks, Umberto Eco and Juan Pablo Bonta. Acceding to analysis, Korean eclecticism churches have the unique transformation process and specific meaning of the spontaneous process of development. In the results of the semiological analysis of HWASAN church, it can be revealed clearly that transformed process of form리 characteristics of HWASAN church intented to formal originality of western Gothic church, but its form and meaning were based not on any simply imported western style but on existing system of Korean architecture.

  • Poet, Yi-sang, born in 1910, originally studied architecture in Kyeong Sung High Technical School. He also experienced an architectural practice in Chosun Chongdokbu (the Government office of Japanese empire in Korea) during 4 years. After resigned the post of architectural engineer in 1933, he became a man of letters. Until his death in 1937, he published the writings hard to understand, which remind us of the works of western avant-garde. Because of the peculiarity and difficulty of his poem and novels, he becomes the object of studies by many critics and historians of literature. And he is estimated as the representative of Korean modernism. This study tries to related Yi-sang's early poems to architectural discourse for the search of 'modernity' of Korean modern architecture. His early poems, which is published in from 1931 to 1933, are worthy of notice because they contained a acute shock derived from radically changed spacial structure, the absolute emptiness of the individual happened in the 1930's Seoul. They also show a different attitude from the writings of Park Dongjin and Park Kilryong, the architects contemporary with Yi-Sang. Compared with their writings, Yi sang's early poems had an insight into the totality of modern culture like western avant-gardes. Therefore Yi-sang's early poems can give us a good base to understand the characteristics of 'modernity' of Korean architecture.

  • This research focused on the regional and temporal attributes of tuff architecture in Mokpo, spanning the Japanese colonial period and the post-liberation era. It aimed to uncover the distinct regional and temporal features of tuff architecture by integrating concepts from vernacular architecture and regionalism, framed through a lens of critical regionalism. The study traced the historical progression of tuff architecture in Mokpo within this context. A significant part of the research was an in-depth analysis of four constructions by Son Yang-dong, a renowned technician in post-liberation Mokpo, to closely examine the contemporary relevance and regional significance of his work. Tuff, as an indigenous material, distinctly articulates the local architectural character. In line with regional properties of tuff, the material has adeptly responded to contemporary construction needs. This has laid a foundation for the development of innovative building designs and techniques. Tuff architecture is particularly noted for its exhibition of raw material textures, offering a unique aesthetic that diverges from classical Western architectural styles. Importantly, through the examination of Son Yang-dong's contributions, the study highlights the role of Korean builders in an industry dominated by Japanese influences during the colonial period, underscoring a strong regional identity. As a representation of Mokpo, tuff architecture not only upholds and protects regional identity within the broader scope of Western modernization and Japanese impacts but also plays a role in its progressive enhancement.

Minimalism is a plural phenomenon that has developed from Modernism to Contemporary but there is the tendency to define minimalism within Architecture and Art. Also it is a fact that there are many disordered minimal aspects in Architecture. This study is started from accurate understanding the mistakes in the field of Interior Architecture, that are brought by the elapse of time, and analogizing the circumstances of Interior Architecture in the field of Architecture. Especially the purpose of this study is to grasp the relation between the minimal characteristics of Korean traditional Architecture and the stagnancy of Korean Architecture. Under the assumption that the characteristics of minimalism exist in Korean tradition, this study contents the characteristics of minimalism in western modernism to analyze the contemporary Korean Architecture and interior Architecture that the assumption is appled to.

  • This research examines the historic preservation of Korean modern architecture by applying Kenneth Frampton(1930-)'s concept of critical regionalism. It explores the representative Korean modern architect Gil-ryong Park (1898-1943) and two of his buildings: the Hwashin Department Store (1935) and the No-soo Park house (1937-1938). The former was in the hot spot on the preservation. There were plans to preserve this building but that it ended up being demolished in 1987. The latter building, however, has been preserved and is currently being used as a museum. These two Korean modern buildings are explored through the frame of Kenneth Frampton's critical regionalism, in particular focusing on three important concepts: "dialectical expression," "place-form," and "sustainability." In this sense, this research will provide pioneering research in understanding the preservation of Korean modern architecture through a representative Western modern theory. In the early $20^{th}$ century, Korean modern architecture, which was built during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), could be interpreted as critical regionalism because it represented a dialog between the West and the East, in particular between Western modernism, Japanese modernity, and Korean tradition in the East Asian context. Understanding Korean modernism in this context of a cross-cultural perspective enables scholars to define both the origins and uniqueness of Korean modern architecture.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the 'Modern Architecture Space' represented in Korean melodrama films of the late 1950s. It is assumed that popular films reflect the residential culture, architectural spaces and human activities of those days. For the analysis, a pool of 5 Korean melodramas of the late 1950s was constructed. In these melodramas, the modern architectural spaces were represented as the following: 1) The modern-style residential spaces were emphasized to reflect the interest and longing of the public for western lifestyle. 2) The western non-residential spaces such as work spaces and commercial spaces were emphasized, especially its interior design of western image.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the site selection and orientation which have affected the western missionaries in construction of the first western house in Cheongju area. The results of this study are as follows; In the site selection, they chose Tap-Dong hill, by finding the higher position and taking a fine view of all natural elements, because the alters like the tomb of Confucius, the existing settlement Godang village, Dang Mt. are already located around this area. And also it was that they could easily go into Tap-Dong hill through the existing alleys, These alleys, generated near the original road of Tap-Dong hill, are developed to modern road system. These alleys affect western house's entrance and orientation. In deciding the orientation of house, korean people prefer to south and east by considering Feng-shui theory; otherwise western house, specially the first house has a southwestern aspect, because the western missionaries have a preference for the topography, entry, and view than a house facing south.

  • The modern philosophy of historic conservation focuses on the permanence of the material aspects of monuments as historic evidence of the artistic achievement of the past. However, so strongly are European attitudes to architecture and its conservation embedded in modern conservation, that it has skewed all conservation thinking towards the concept of the European-type monument which emphasizes visual beauty through its material substance. Thus, some basic ideas of modern conservation seem ill-suited to East Asian architecture which is conceived in a different spirit from its European counterpart. The purposes of the paper are to discuss the need for approaches which are different from the modern Western view of conservation for East Asian architectural heritage, and to make suggestions for developing conservation principles more suited to the unique values and aesthetic sense of East Asian culture and architecture. Conservation principles in the East Asian societies are determined in relation to the spiritual and naturalistic sensibilities of East Asian culture and architecture.
