  • While the issue of caring for the elderly that faces the modern society has reached a serious level, it is expected that it will be particularly true in the Republic of Korea where an aged, not an aging, society is impending. In this paper I did research on establishing behavioral model of residents who dwell in home or welfare facilities. I suggested a behavioral model in daily living, $W_{ip}(n)$, based on event triggering. A multi-hop routing-based wireless luminance/temperature sensor network was built based on the proposed resident's behavioral model. 1 did experiments on behavioral activities of residents on the wireless sensor network system. According to experimental results. I could classify whether the daily activity of a resident someday is regular or not. These experimental results show that the proposed behavioral model is highly applicable in caring for residents in home or welfare facilities effectively in the future.

  • Because the psychophysical symptoms of hearing loss and dementia in the elderly are very similar, untrained healthcare professionals in dementia facilities can easily overlook a severity of hearing loss in their patients. The present study identifies their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) on hearing loss using a survey whether they may help hearing problem of the patients with dementia. A total of 29 health-care professionals responded to the KAP survey. Also, 2 family members participated. The results showed that most of the nurses and caregivers in elderly medical welfare facilities who worked with dementia patients did not have knowledge of their hearing loss. Even the facility managers did not know how to conduct hearing tests for their patients although they did recognize that some of their patients had a hearing loss. Eventually, actual practice was not possible at this moment by the professionals. However, our respondents did have a positive attitude toward screening for hearing loss and help their patients with dementia wear hearing aids if a clinical guideline was provided. We suggest to develop clear and precise clinical guidelines of the hearing screening test for the dementia patients due to the interrelationship between dementia and hearing loss. When these guidelines apply to elderly residents in a medical welfare facility, early diagnosis and treatment of their sensory loss will help alleviate their dementia as well.

Nutrition and dietary status have been investigated for both the institutionalized and non-institutionalized (independent-living) elderly in foreign country. But the dietary status of institutionalized elderly has not been investigated. Therefore, the dietary status of institutionalized elderly has been studied and compared with that of non-institutionalized elderly in the same geographic area. Three-day dietary records were obtained from fourty-five institutionalized elderly residents (twenty-five men and twenty women) and thirty two elderly living at home (sixteen men and sixteen women) in Taegu area. All nutrient intakes of the elderly women living at home and all nutrient intakes except energy intakes of the elderly men living at home were significantly higher than those of the residents of the institutionalized facilities. (p<0.005) The values of height, weight, chest circumference, and sitting height except head circumference of female elderly living in institutionalized facilities is significantly lower than those of elderly living at home. (p<0.005) In the case of men, the values of height and chest circumference of elderly living in institutionalized facilities is significantly lower than those of elderly living at home. (p<0.05)

This is due to the reduction of administrative tasks, the computerization of programs, the importance of community participation activities, the activation of community, and the increase of welfare projects. Therefore, the community centers' program and spaces need to change. Therefore, this study propose an improvement direction through analyzing the situation of the residents' community center. For this study, the precedent research and institutional limitations are examined. In addition, this study selected and analyzed the 15 local community center. Thirdly, interviews were conducted with users and officials of the 5 residents' community centers on major changes. Finally, This study suggests direction of program improvement and architectural design direction. As a result of this study, integrated management measures with overlapping agencies should be sought. Surplus space will have to be rearranged into a new program through prior examination.
