  • The non-destructive examinations for Yonggwang unit 6 was conducted in four different fields, these are 1)all non-destructive inspections for components, piping weldments and structures, 2)automated ultrasonic inspection for pressure vessels weldments. As the results, there were no big indications, and all indications detected during inspection were evaluated as the metallurgical and geometrical non-reinvent indications form weldments. Especially for the weldment of pipes, PD(Performance Demonstration) was applied as a UT inspection method according to 1995 edition of ASME code Sex. XI, this resulted in improvement of the reliability of UT inspection.

  • Ultrasonic inspection of austenitic steel weldments is a truly difficult task due to complicated wave propagation phenomena such as beam skewing, splitting and distortion. In order to understand these phenomena and design proper inspection procedures, simulation is increasingly paid more attention to. This article addresses a ray tracing based approach to determine incident angle and position of optimal wave mode ultrasonic beam for flaw detection in anisotropic and inhomogeneous austenitic steel weldments. Specially, the optimal mode of ultrasonic wave wave is selected by ray tracing simulation, and an optimization approach based on ray tracing and bi-section search is proposed in order to find the ray path connecting two given points in weldments. With help of this approach, the optimal incident angle and position of ultrasonic beam can be determined for a given flaw position.

  • The non-destructive Inspection of the fillet weldment has difficulties due to its geometrical complexity and uneasy access. The surface shear horizontal wave (SH-wave), however, has been successfully applied to the detection of cracks on the surface and sub-surface of the filet weldment heel part. The conventional ultrasonic inspection using the surface SH-wave is usually a contact method using piezoelectric transducer. Thus, it is not suitable for a field application because the reliability and repeatability of inspection are significantly affected by test conditions such as couplant, contact pressure and pre-process. In order to overcome this problem, a non-contact SH-wave inspection method using EMAT is propose. The experimental results with this non-contact method are compared with those with a conventional ultrasonic method in fillet weldment with slit type defects. It is shown that the non-contact inspection technique requires simple procedure and less time in the fillet weldment inspection.

  • The importance and role of preservice and inservice inspection(PSI/ISI) for nuclear power plant components are intimately related to plant design, safety, reliability and operation etc.. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) has been performing PSI/ISI in Korea since the PSI of Kori nuclear power plant, unit 1 had been performed in 1977. KAERI has localized PSI/ISI technology and has done much experience in ultrasonic flaw detection, evaluation and its excavation on the weldments of large pressure vessels. The results of flaw estimation using ultrasonic examination are compared with the actual flaw sizes revealed by field excavation. KAERI's experience regarding PSI/ISI was described and some discussions were added.

  • Parametric studies have been conducted into the variability of the factors affecting the ultrasonic testing applied to weldments. The influence of ultrasonic equipment, transducer parameters, test technique, job parameters, defect type and characteristics on reliability far defect detection and sizing was investigated by experimentation. The investigation was able to build up substantial bank of information on the reliability of manual ultrasonic method for testing weldments. The major findings of the study separate into two parts, one dealing with correlation between ultrasonic techniques, equipment and defect parameters and inspection performance effectiveness and other with human factors. Defect detection abilities are dependent on the training, experience and proficiency of the UT operators, the equipment used, the effectiveness of procedures and techniques.

  • 원자력발전소 운전에 따른 경년열화 등에 의하여 원자력발전소 주요 기기 및 재료 등에 손상 발생 가능성이 있어 원자력법 및 관련 기술기준에서는 비파괴검사 방법을 이용하여 원자력발전소 주요 기기 및 배관의 용접부 등 취약 부위에 대한 건전성을 주기적으로 평가토록하고 있다. 이에 따라, 영광 6호기 가동중검사는 기기, 배관 및 구조물 비파괴검사, 압력용기 자동 초음파탐상검사, 원자로 내부 구조물 육안검사 및 증기발생기 전열관 와전류탐상검사로 구분하여 수행하였다. 원자력발전소 계통의 주요기기에 대한 비파괴검사 결과, 기기, 배관 및 구조물과 원자로 압력용기 용접부에 대해서는 특이 사항 발생 없이 적용 규격에 만족되고 건전한 것으로 최종 평가되었다. 특히, 배관 용접부에 대한 초음파탐상검사는 영광 5호기에서와 마찬가지로 ASME Code Sec. XI 1995년도 판에 따라 기량검증(Performance Demonstration : PD) 방법을 적용함으로써 검사 신뢰도를 확보하였다는데 큰 의미가 있다.

  • 용접부 내에 존재하는 결함의 형태, 위치, 크기 등의 정보를 정량적으로 파악하기 위하여 초음파 탐상 검사가 많이 활용되는데, 최근 들어 용접부의 결함 탐상을 위해, 검사과정을 기계적 스캐너로 자동화한 자동 초음파 탐상 시스템이 많은 산업분야에서 활용되고 있고, 특히 배관 용접부의 건전성 평가를 위한 비 파괴안전진단에서 그 활용 폭이 커지고 있다. 배관 용접부 건전성 제고를 위해 본 연구를 통해 용접부 결함 영상화 프로그램을 구현하였다.
