The use of thick plate in increasing in recent years due to the rapid expansion of chemical plants, nuclear plants, ships and other industrial plants. Welding is the most popular joining techniques employed in manufacturing industrial machineries and structures. Normally, Groove shapes are prepared according to appropriate rules and regulations such as KS, JIS, AWS, LR, DNV and etc. for various thicknesses of plate. However those groove angles tend to be too large. As a result of large groove angle, residual stress, deformation of material and strength reduction is obtained. Therefore, the reliability and safety of structures and machinery tend to be decreasing. Therefore, in this paper, theoretical as well as experimental study are carried out to find optimum groove shapes for T-welded joint of mild steel. The test specimen are made in same condition with simulation model. Welding residual stresses measurement by sectional cutting method. ⅰ) The mechanical difference for change the thickness of plate and groove angle are not appeared. ⅱ) In a mechanical point of view minimum preparation angle(40°) is more suitable than maximum groove angle(60℃). ⅲ) The measurement value and distribution of welding residual stresses are not effected largely by groove angle. It is mechanical restraint that mainly affect welding residual stresses distribution. In mechanical point of view minimum groove angle is more suitable than maximum groove angle. Therefore, it is appropriate to minimize the size of groove shape in strength and safety.
In this paper, arc characteristics of V groove joints using pulsed GMA welding were found out. The bevel angles of $22.5^{\circ}$ and $30.0^{\circ}$ were chose to make the V groove configuration with the groove angles of $45^{\circ}$ and $60.0^{\circ}$, respectively. In the experiment, the arc current waveform measurement and the high speed photography were taken to investigate the arc characteristics for a single-beveled asymmetric workpiece. Consequently, the welding current was changed abnormally around the edge of groove. As the arc moved close to the groove face, the welding current was increased rapidly because the welding arc was affected by the inclined surface. Also the welding current waveforms were measured for the double-sided symmetric workpiece to verify the previous measurements for the single-beveled workpiece, and similar current waveforms were found.
This study was performed to develop repair technology for J-Groove dissimilar metal weld of pressurizer heater sleeve in nuclear power plants. Pad, J-Groove automatic welding and mechanical machining equipments to develop repair technology using 'Half Nozzle Repair' were designed and manufactured. To obtain the optimum welding process parameters during Pad temperbead overlay welding, several welding experiments using Taguchi method were conducted. Weldability of Pad overlay weld specimens was estimated by PT/RT test, FE-SEM, EDS and Vickers hardness test. Also, J-Groove welding to adjust weld shape conditions requiring in ASME Code was carried out and its integrity of weld specimens was evaluated through PT/RT test and optical microscope. Consequently, it was revealed that Pad and J-Groove overlay welding for dissimilar metal weld of pressurizer heater sleeve could be possible to meet Code standard without weld defect.
The welding residual stresses produced by the welding frequently caused a crack and promote stress corrosion etc. in HAZ(heat affected zone) contained with external load and weakness of material. Therefore, PWHT(post welding heat treatment) is widely used to reduce wekdubg residuss, to relax hardening of heat affected zone and to get rid of impurity. In this study, in order to define the effect on shappes of T-welded joint, during the post welding heat treatment, we have carried out numerical analyses on the several test pieces by using computer program which was based on thermal-elasto-plato-plasto-creep theories for the study. The main results obtained form this study is as follows: 1) The mechanical difference for change the thickness of plate and groove angle did not appear. 2) The distribution modes of welding residual stresses are same on the all test specimens during the post welding heat treatment. 3) In a mecharical point of view, minimum groove groove angle($40^{circ}$) is more suitable than maximum groove angle($60^{circ}$). 4) Therefore, it is appropriate to minimize the size of groove shape in strength and safety.
Thick plate is currently widely used in shipbuilding due to the increasing of size of ships. However, its use has increased welding groove angles and volume. The welder's technique must be good enough to improve productivity while preventing defects. Generally, the groove angle can be reduced to less than a flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) machine setting of $35{\pm}5^{\circ}$, requiring fewer welding passes while maintaining high productivity and reduced heat input. Therefore, welding technique can be prevented by improved mechanical properties and welding deformation. Welding defects such as lack of fusion (LF), lack of penetration (LP) and hot cracking should be considered when reducing the groove angle for related applications. In this study, a welding groove angle of $25{\pm}5^{\circ}$ is verified as suitable for FCAW design and fabrication. The experimental results confirm the effects on the strength characteristics of FCAW weldment when reducing groove angle to improve the productivity of shipbuilding industries.
Ships, structures on the ocean, bridges, and other structures tend to be large by the development of industry. These ultra thick plate were welded with large heat input, which causes welding stresses, deformation and buckling, so it has to be considered the weld design, safety, reliability. The welded residual stresses were produced and redistributed due to the effect of large heat input. The mechanical phenomenon has not been surely identified yet. In spite of the lack of the study on the box column, there are various types of steel frame such as I type, H type, + type and $\bigcirc$ type, used in high story building. In this study, we performed computer simulation with two dimensional heat conduction and plane deformation thermal elasto-plastic finite element computer program as changing the plate thickness to 100mm, 150mm and groove angle to $60^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ of corner joint in box column. And then, to identify mechanical phenomenon such as the phenomenon of thermal distribution, welding residual stresses and deformation and to decide optimum groove angle and welding condition. The main conclusion can be summarized as follows: 1) Since the groove angle has became cooling down rapidly due to its smaller value, the temperature slope was steeped somewhat. 2) The tensile stress within the welding direction stresses was somewhat decreased at the weld metal and HAZ, increasing of the groove angle. 3) The local stress concentration of the groove angle $60^{\circ}C$ was appeared smaller than groove angle $30^{\circ}$.
In conventional arc welding, position error of the weld torch with respect to the weld seam and variation of groove dimension are induced by inaccurate fitup and fixturing. In this study, a vision system has been developed to recognize and compensate the position error and dimensional inaccuracy. The system uses a structured laser light illuminated on the weld groove and perceived by a C.C.D camera. A new algorithm to detect the edge of the reflected laser light is introduced for real time processing. The developed system was applied to arbitarary weld paths with various types of joint in arc welding process. The experimental results show that the proposed system can detect the weld groove parameters within good accuracy and yield good tracking performance.
An automatic welding equipment for thick plates requires the capability of the seam tracking of the weld line which often includes misalignment of the workpiece and variation of groove width. In this study, an automatic welding equipment and control algorithms based on the arc sensor were proposed for the GMA welding of thick plates which had misalignment and gap variation. The developed system being constituted with 5 axis can be automatically controlled by computer and also automnatically set the welding conditions such as welding current, and voltage. The proposed algorithms for the seam tracking in multi-pass welding of the thick plates were constituted as follows : the detection of weaving-end point for findng the variation of groove width, the control of welding velocity for acquiring a constant thickness deposition of weld metal, and the calculation of groove width and height of an arbitrary pass in the multi-pass weld. As results of the application of the system, it was revealed that the system had a good capability in seam tracking and made an excellent weld quality in V groove butt joint.
Recently, use of thick Al 5083 plate has increased in production of LNG storage tank. In general, multi-pass welding has been used to achieve sufficient penetration in thick plate welding. High current welding which enables high deposition and deep penetration is preferred in thick plate welding because the increase of number of pass increases manufacturing cost and formation of weld defect. In this study, welding characteristics according to various Ar/He shielding gas composition was investigated in high current MIG welding. The bead-on-plate welding and V groove welding were conducted on Al 5083 alloy with a thickness of .25 mm. The effect of shielding gas composition on bead shape was evaluated and proper shielding gas composition was proposed. Also arc stability was examined under selected shielding gas composition. One side-one pass welding experiments were conducted for V groove specimen with a thickness of 25 mm. Mechanical properties and hardness profiles were measured for the V groove specimens.
In weaving welding where a V groove exists, the heat input distribution is an important factor that determines the defectiveness of the bead shape, undercut and over-lap. In this study, the amount of heat input, which is determined by the welding current, voltage, speed and weaving conditions is calculated through mathematical development and numerical methods. Furthermore, the heat input distribution as a two- dimensional heat source was observed when applied to each groove.
