This paper presents the results of investigating the change in welding residual stresses of the core shroud, which is one of subcomponents in reactor vessel internals, performing finite element analysis. First, the welding residual stresses of the core shroud were calculated by applying the heat conduction based lumped pass technique and finite element elastic-plastic stress analysis. Second, the temperature distribution of the core shroud during the normal operation was calculated by performing finite element temperature analysis considering gamma heating. Third, through the finite element viscoelastic-plastic stress analysis using the calculated temperature distribution and setting the calculated residual stresses as the initial stress state, the variation of the welding residual stresses was derived according to repeating the normal operation. In the viscoelastic-plastic stress analysis, the effects of neutron irradiation on mechanical properties during the cyclic normal operations were considered by using the previously developed user subroutines for the irradiation agings such as irradiation hardening/embrittlement, irradiation-induced creep, and void swelling. Finally, the effect of neutron irradiation on the welding residual stresses was analysed for each irradiation aging. As a result, it is found that as the normal operation is repeated, the welding residual stresses decrease and show insignificant magnitudes after the 10th refueling cycle. In addition, the irradiation-induced creep/void swelling has significant mitigation effect on the residual stresses whereas the irradiation hardening/embrittlement has no effect on those.

A finite element interface system for the design of optimal spot welding locations has been developed. In order to find out the optimal locations of spot welding points, iterative finite element an alyses are necessary, and thus automatic generation of finite element model for the structures with spot welded pointsis required. In this interface system, quadrilateral shell elements are automatically generated for finite element analysis of spot welded structured, which employs a domain decomposition methodand adaptive mesh(h-method).
The welding residual stress has on important effect on welding deformation, fatigue fracture, buckling strength, brittle fracture, etc. For the purpose of relaxation of welding residual stress, post welding heat treatment is widely used. In this paper, residual stresses were calculated by two dimensional thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element method. Heat transfer analysis are performed by transient analysis. Also structure analysis are carried out by of thermal-mechanical coupled analysis. Numerical analysis are used by ANSYS 5.7.

For three-dimensional finite element welding residual stress simulation, several methods are available. Two widely used methods are the moving heat source model using heat flux and the temperature boundary condition model using the temperature profile of the welded beads. However, each model has pros and cons in terms of calculation times and difficulties in determining welding parameters. In this paper, a new method using the moving temperature profile model is proposed to perform efficiently 3-D FE welding residual stress analysis for large structures. Comparison with existing experimental residual stress measurement data of two-pass welding pipe and SNL(Sandia National Laboratories) mock-up canister shows the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.
A very large shell-structure built in shipyards like ship hulls or offshore structures are joined by welding through full process. As the welding contains a high thermal cycle at a local area, the welded structures should be distorted unavoidably. Because a distorted ship block should be revised to the designed value before the next stage, the ability to predict and to control the weld distortion is an accuracy level of the yard itself. Despite the ship block size, several present thermal distortion methodologies can deal those sizes, but it is a different story to deal full ship size model. Even a fully constructed ship hull not remaining any welding can have an accuracy issue like outfitting installation problems. Any present thermal distortion methodology cannot accept this size for its recommended element size and the number. The ordinary welding breadth at erection stage is about 20~40 mm. It can hardly be a good choice to make finite element model of these sizes considering human effort and computational environment. The finite element model for structure analysis of a ship hull is prepared at front-end engineering design stage which is the first process of the project. The element size of the model is as fine as the longitudinal space, and it is not proper to obtain a weld distortion at the erection stage. In this study, a methodology is suggested that a weldment can be shrunk at original place instead of using structural finite element model. We cut the original shell elements at erection weld-line and put truss elements between the edges of cut elements for weld shrinkage. Additional truss elements are used to facsimile transverse weld shrinkage which cannot be from the weld-line truss element shrink. They attach to weld-line truss element like twigs from barks. The capacity of developed elements is verified through an accuracy check of erection process of a container vessel at the apt. hull. It can be a useful tool for verifying a centering accuracy after renew and for block-separating planning considering accuracy.
Welding distortions of large steel structures had mainly been estimated with some simplified formula obtained by lots of experience and numerical analyses for small steel structures. However, the large structures would have different characteristics of distortion with welding because of their own stiffness coming from the size itself. Therefore, in order to find some measures for preventing welding distortion of large structure, it is requite in advance to precisely analysis thermal stress and distortion during welding of the structure. Numerical analysis for larger structure has been known to take large amount of calculation time and have a poor convergency problem during the thermo-elasto-plastic calculation. In this study, a hybrid method is proposed to analysis the thermal stress and distortion of a large steel plate with the finite element analysis by incorporating with temperature distribution of the plate calculated by an analytical solution. The proposed method revealed that the thermo-mechanical analysis for welding of the large structure could be performed with a good convergence and produced precise results with much reduced time consumption.
This study aimed at he experimental and finite element analytic investigation of the effect of preheating on he residual stress of weldment. In this study, an autogenous arc welding was used on type 304 stainless steel and MARC as F.E.M. common code was utilized in analysis The analyses include transient and moving heat source and thermal properties as function of temperature. During welding, the thermal cycles of four locations in the weldment were recorded to investigate of the behavior of thermal stress and residual stress. The experimental and analytic results had good coincidence and show that there are two factors influencing the formation of welding residual stress in preheat process. One is the elevation of welding equilibrium temperature and the other is the increase of amount of heat input. The former decrease welding residual stress and the latter increase welding residual stress. Therefore, the cumulative effects result in the welding residual stress not being improved significantly with preheating in 304 stainless steel.
The welding residual stress should be considered in fatigue stress analysis because it develope during the process of the electric resistance spot welding and it causes bad affect on the fatigue crack initiation and growth at nugget edge of spot welded points. Therefore the accurate estimation of residual stress is crucial. In this study, nonlinear finite element analysis on welding residual stress generated during the process of the spot welding was conducted, and their results were compared with the experimental data measured by X-ray diffraction method. From the results, it was found that welding residual stress existed as tension in the nugget center and as compression around the nugget edge.

In this study, we calculate the welding residual stresses for a butt-welded thin-walled plate by carrying out three-dimensional finite-element analyses. To study the effect of mechanical boundary conditions on the welding residual stresses, various boundary conditions are considered. The welding residual stresses obtained in the measurements and finite-element analyses are validated by comparing them with the welding residual stress profiles in the R6 code. The results of this study are used to analyze the influence of residual stress on the crack formation in thin-section weldments.

In our study, we develop a finite element model based on Archard's wear law to predict the cumulative wear and the evolution of the tool profile in friction stir welding (FSW) applications. Our model considers the rotational and translational behaviors of the tool, providing a comprehensive description of the wear process. We validate the accuracy of our model by comparing it against experimental results, examining both the predicted cumulative wear and the resulting changes to the tool profile caused by wear. We perform a detailed comparison between the predictions of the model and experimental data by manipulating non-dimensional coefficients comprising model parameters, such as element sizes and time increments. This comparison facilitates the identification of a specific non-dimensional coefficient condition that best replicates the experimentally observed cumulative wear. We also directly compare the worn tool profiles predicted by the model using this specific non-dimensional coefficient condition with the profiles obtained from wear experiments. Through this process, we identify the model settings that yield a tool wear profile closely aligning with the experimental results. Our research demonstrates that carefully selecting non-dimensional coefficients can significantly enhance the predictive accuracy of finite element models for tool wear in FSW processes. The results from our study hold potential implications for enhancing tool longevity and welding quality in industrial applications.
