Welding distortion is a current issue in many industrial parts, especially for heavy industry such as shipbuilding, plant industry. The welding process has many processing parameters influencing welding angular distortion such as heat input power, welding speed, gas flow rate, plate thickness and the welded material properties, etc. In this work, the conventional local minimization concept was applied to find a set of optimum welding process parameters, consisted of welding speed, plate thickness and heat input, for a minimum angular distortion. An analytic solution for welding angular distortion, which is based on laminated plate theory, was also applied to investigate and optimize the welding process parameters. The optimized process parameters and the angular distortion for various parametric conditions could be easily found by using the local minimum concept.
Recently, welding technology of nonferrous metals which were difficult to implement by arc welder has become available through digitalization of arc welding machine. Among them, the welding quality improvement of aluminum welding is very noticeable. These results increase the arc stability by controlling arc current and voltage waveform precisely, and control wire feed speed by synchronizing with arc current which the feed rate of filler wire is controlled by a precise motor control of servomotor and not by a simple constant speed feeding. Not only through the hardware digitalization of arc welding machine but also through advance of software of arc welding, it became possible to implement a certain level of welding quality by a simple operation. These led to CMT welding process implementation which requires low heat input than current arc welding and highly increased the applicability of the aluminum welding.
In this study, the influence of carbon equivalents on friction welds of dissimilar steels was investigated. Four types of carbon steels with 10mm diameter were welded to a high-speed tool steel SKH 9. Main experimental results could be summarized as follows (1) Under constant friction pressure, the friction time increased almost linearly with the increasing burn-off length, while the forge length decreased almost linearly. (2) The maximum hardness in carbon steels increased almost linearly with the increasing carbon equivalent, but was much lower than that in the high speed steel. (3) After quenching and tempering of dissimilar steel friction welds, the hardness in carbon steel weldments became similar as that in the base metal, while the hardness in SKH 9 weld was still higher that of the base metal. (4) Relative movement in the friction phae occurred not at the interface of the weldments, but in the high speed steed steel near the interface. (5) For considered material combinations and welding parameters, most of fractures in tension and twisting tests occurred in the base metal. And welds with so high strength could produced in a wide range of welding parameters.
High speed rotating arc process, forming a flat bead surface with shallow penetration depth, can be applied to the automatic seam tracking, because the amplitude of current waveform increases at high rotation speed. Two high speed arc rotation mechanisms have been developed in Japan and Germany b rotating the electrode nozzle using an external motor, which are used prevalently for narrow gap and conventional seam welding. In this study, a new rotation mechanism was developed by using a hallow shaft motor designed to be installed in the electrode nozzle. By rotating the welding arc, the amplitude of current waveform increases remarkably since the self-regulation of arc is not fully performed. Experiments show that the arc sensor with high-speed rotation arc has improved its responsiveness and sensitivity.
For the purpose of establishing laser welding condition (laser power, welding speed and beam focus) and of evaluating tailored blanks for two kinds of thin steel sheets SPCC and SK5M using in the thin plate structure such as automobile, train, and so on, investigated their $CO^2$ laser weldability under various initial welding conditions. SPCC thin sheet showed good weldability under some welding conditions. But, high carbon steel sheet SK5M needed heat treatment after welding to obtain ductility of the welded joint. And next, tailored blank was tested through deep drawing to evaluate reliability of their obtained laser welding conditions. The forming depths by tailored blank were SPCC+SPCC=22-25mm and SK5M+SK5M=13-25mm.
Laser-arc hybrid welding has been considered as an effective pipe girth welding process since early 2000's. Tolerance for fit-up offsets such as gap and edge misalignment is one of most important requirements in pipe girth laser-arc hybrid welding, and several approaches using parameter optimization, a laser beam scanning and an arc oscillation have been tried. However the required offset tolerance has not been fully accomplished up to now and laser-arc hybrid welding has not been widely applied in pipeline construction than expected, despite of its high welding speed and deep penetration. In this study, internal welding was adopted to ensure the offset tolerance and sound back bead. The effect of welding parameters on bead shape was investigated at the flat position. Also tolerances for gap and edge misalignment were verified as 0.5 mm and 2.0 mm, respectively. The position welding trials were conducted at several welding positions from the flat to the overhead position in a downward direction. With the fixed welding speed, arc current for gas metal arc welding current and laser output power, adequate welding voltages for gas metal arc welding were suggested for each position.
Since the wall thickness can be up to 6" or greater, welds must be made in many layers, each layer containing several passes. However, the welding time for the conventional welding processes such as SAW(Submerged Arc Welding) and FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding) can be required many hours. The aim of this paper is to develop a high speed welding system with multi-torch and laser vision sensor for increasing the production speed on the line and to remove the need for the operator so that the system can run automatically for the complete multi-torch multi-layer weld. It was shown that the developed laser vision sensor and analysis of arc blow for multi-torch were effective for multi-pass seam tracking and stable arc. A new automated multi-torch welding systems for thick wall applications has been proved in several production lines.
This paper was described on investigation to prevent porosity in high speed MIG Welding of Al 6082-T6. Porosity measurement was carried out by using image analysis of micrographs with the help of an analysis software. The main parameter was arc length and torch progressive angle. The porosity ratio was increased as arc length was increased. The arc length was increased depending upon the output voltage. By proper selection of pulse waveform parameter, the stable arc of one pulse one drop was generated. The porosity ratio of optimum condition in one pulse one drop was lower than high voltage condition. When torch progressive angle was an angle of advance $10^{\circ}$, porosity ratio was minium.
This study was performed to evaluate basic characteristics of electron beam welding process for a 9% Ni steel plate. The principal welding process parameters, such as working distance, accelerating voltage, beam current and welding speed were investigated. The AB (Arata Beam) test method was also applied to characterize beam size and energy density of the electron beam welding process. The electron beam size was found to decrease with the increase of accelerating voltage and the decrease of working distance. So, in case of high voltage (150kV), spot size and energy density of electron beam were revealed to be 0.9mm and $6.5\times10^5W/\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively. The accelerating voltage among the welding parameters was found to be the most important factor governing the penetration depth. When the accelerating voltage of electron beam was low ($\leq$90kV), beam current and welding speed did not affect on the penetration depth significantly. However, in case of high voltage ($\geq$120kV), the depth of penetration increased very sensitively with the increase of beam current and the decrease of welding speed.
This paper deals with the effect of laser welding parameters on the weld formation. Thin steels for automotive application were prepared so as to be welded with high power carbon dioxide laser system. Major process parameters were position of focus and travel speed. The effect of shielding gas was also discussed by employing the high speed photometry. Test results showed that the optimal position of focus varied in accordance with the joint configuration; bead-on-plate, butt or lap welding. It was recommended that the position of focus for the lap welding be located at slightly inner part of the material to be welded. In this case, however, it was noticeable that the weld penetration ratio, d/t$_{0}$ dropped drastically at the critical region. Results also demonstrated that both the bead width and penetration reduced as the travel speed increased. The penetration ratio showed two distinct regions; stabilized zone at the lower range of the travel spped and sudden drop zone at the higher range of travel speed. Lower limit of the penetration for acceptable weld was proved to be about 90% of the parent metal thickness based on the physical properties of the weld. Mixed gas application for both the shielding of molten metal and laser induced plasma control was recommended as far as the penetration was concerned.d.
