The purpose of the study is to evaluate fracture toughness on the Laser and the electron beam welded joints of high tensile steels (HT500, HT550, HT650) by using 3-point bend CTOD and Charpy impact test. WM (weld metal) CTOD tests have been carried out using two kinds of CTOD specimen, the Laser beam welding (108mm length, and 24mm width, and 12mm thickness) and the electron beam welding (l71mm length, and 38mm width, and 19mm thickness). WM Charpy impact specimen is a standard V-notch type, and the temperature of the experiment is changed from -45 to 20 degree of centigrade. FE-analysis is also performed in order to investigate the effect of stress-strain fields on fracture characteristics. Results of the standard V-notch Charpy test are influenced by strength mis-match effect and the absorbed energy vE depends on crack path, and The transition temperature of Laser beam welded joints is more higher than that of electron beam welded joints. Results of the 3-point bend test give low critical CTOD and the crack path is in the weld metal of al specimens. These results indicate fracture toughness characteristics of the welded joints and transition temperature of HT500 are similar both a Laser beam welded joint and an electron beam welded joint. But the fracture toughness and the transition temperature of the electron beam welded joints of HT550 and HT650 are higher than those o the Laser beam welded joints.
A series of tests on simple-welded plate specimens (SWPS) and T-stub tension specimens simulating some of the joint details in moment frame connections were conducted in this investigation. The effects of weld strength mismatch and weld metal toughness on structural behavior of these specimens were considered under both static and dynamic loading conditions. Finite element analyses were performed by taking into account typical weld residual stress distributions and weld metal strength mismatch conditions to facilitate the interpretation of the test results. The major findings are as follows: (a) Sufficient specimen size requirements are essential in simulating both load transfer and constraint conditions that are relevant to moment frame connections, (b) Weld residual stresses can significantly elevate stress triaxiality in addition to structural constraint effects, both of which can significantly reduce the plastic deformation capacity in moment frame connections, (c) Based on the test results, dynamic loading within a loading rate of 0.02 in/in/sec, as used in this study, premature brittle fractures were not seen, although a significant elevation of the yield strength can be clearly observed. However, brittle fracture features can be clearly identified in T-stub specimens in which severe constraint effects (stress triaxiality) are considered as the primary cause, (d) Based on both the test and FEA results, T-stub specimens provide a reasonable representation of the joint conditions in moment frame connections in simulating both complex load transfer mode and constraint conditions.
This study aimed at exploiting low heat input characteristic of laser welding to effectively control grain coarsening in the fusion zone(FZ) and heat affected zone(HAZ) of 1.5mm thick 18wt% Cr ferritic stainless steel weld. The study demonstrated that as compared with gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW), laser welding brought about significant grain refinement in the FZ and HAZ. However, the impact absorbed energy of GTA weld was superior than that of laser weld because the strengthening effect during welding and cooling stage was higher In laser weld than that in GTA weld. The coarser grains in each weld than base metal resulted in an inferior toughness.
The fabrication of steel structural members always involves welding process such as flux cored arc welding. Therefore, for the application of structural steels to cold regions, it is a prerequisite to clarify the service temperature of the welded joints in order to ensure the structural integrity of the welded parts. In this study, the Charpy impact test was conducted to evaluate the service temperature of structural steel weld. The Charpy impact test is a commercial quality control test for steels and other alloys used in the construction of metallic structures. The test allows the material properties for service conditions to be determined experimentally in a simple manner with a very low cost. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were prepared and tested under dynamic loading condition. The service temperatures of the weld metal, HAZ (heat affected zone) and base metal were derived by the absorbed energy and the impact test requirements; thus the applicability of the structural steels to cold regions was discussed in detail.
The mechanical and microstructural properties in high heat input welds of home-made SM 50 high strength steels were investigated and compared with the manual shielded metal arc welds. Also, the fracture toughnesses of the simulated weld-bonds with various thermal cycles were quantatively examined in order to provide the basic data for further development of the high strength steels for high input welding. Main results obtained are as follows. (1) The embrittlement degree and the coarse grained region in high heat input welds appear to be extraordinarily large compared with the manual shielded metal arc welds, while the difference in change of nicrohardness is not so large in both welds. (2) The embrittleness in high heat input weld-bonds is mainly affected by the size of coarse grain rather than the microstructure. (3) The fracture toughness in high heat input weld-bonds can be improved by controlling the cooling rate from 800.deg.C to 500.deg.C rapidly.
The microstructure and mechanical properties of the high-strength low-alloy steel weld metals with a variation of nickel content were investigated. The weld metals with a variation of nickel content from 2.3 to 3.3 wt% were prepared using Gas Metal Arc Welding process. The amount of acicular ferrite decreased with increasing nickel content; this is accompanied with an increase in the region of bainite and martensite, hence the hardness and tensile strengths were increased with the increase in nickel content, whereas the impact energy was deteriorated.

Recently, Inconel 625 is used widely in offshore processing piping in order to extend the maintenance tenn and improve the quality of anti-corrosion. According to the resistance to attack in various corrosive media at temperatures from $200^{\circ}C$ to aver $1090^{\circ}C$, in combination with good low- and high-temperature mechanical strength. In general, High quality weldments for this material are readily produced by commonly used processes. in recent years, the flux cored arc welding(FCAW) process is becoming more popular due to higher deposition rate and a better weld quality as compared to the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process, at the same time, exhibiting equally good weld metal toughness similar to the SAW process. In this study, the weldability and weldment characteristics(mechanical properties and corrosive environment) of Inconel 625 are considered in FCAW weld associated with the several weld shielding gases($80\%Ar\;+\;20\%\;CO_2,\;50\%Ar\;+\;50\%\;CO_2,\;100\%\;CO_2$) in viewpoint of welding productivity.
COD test based on fracture mechanics concept was used in this study to evaluate the fracture toughness quantitatively. Effects of specimen sizes on critical COD value for ABS EH 36 steel and its submerged arc weldments, and the variation of critical COD value depending on metallurgical/mechanical heterogeneities caused by weld thermal cycles were investigated. Experiment was performed by using specimens made from base metal and submerged arc weldments according to BS 5762. Obtained results are summarized as follows; 1) Critical COD value for base metal decreases with increasing thickness of specimen. On hand, as the reduction ratio of critical COD decreases with increasing specimen thickness, critical COD value becomes constant above a thickness of specimen. 2) Critical COD value for weldment decreases with increasing thickness of specimen and was also affected by metallurgical states of base metal. 3) Size effects for weldment was greater at the hardened region. 4) Critical COD value was affected by microstructural change due to weld thermal cycles in weldments; that is, accicular ferrite formation is favorable for increasing of COD value.
In this study, the Charpy impact test along with metallurgical observation was conducted to evaluate low temperature impact toughness of structural steel welds with different welding processes to find out the optimal welding process to guarantee the required impact toughness at low temperatures. The welding processes employed are shield metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux cored arc welding(FCAW), which are commonly used welding methods in construction. The Charpy impact test is a commercial quality control test for steels and other alloys used in the construction of metallic structures. The test allows the material properties for service conditions to be determined experimentally in a simple manner with a very low cost. To investigate the impact toughness at low temperatures of the steel welds, specimens were extracted from the weld metal and the heat affected zone. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were prepared and tested under dynamic loading condition. The low temperature impact performance was evaluated based on the correlation between the absorbed energy and the microstructure. Analysis of the results showed that the optimal welding process to ensure the higher low temperature impact toughness of the HAZ and the weld metal is SMAW process using the welding consumable for steels targeted to low temperature use.
