  • This paper proposes a selective-weighted energy detection (S-WED) and a synchronization algorithm appropriate for it in IR-UWB system. Energy detectors that are practical in terms of implementation are employed widely for noncoherent reception in IR-UWB systems. However, they show low performance due to using the energy samples captured at symbol rate. For this reason, weighted energy detectors are developed to improve the performance of EDs. Hence, for WED, not only synchronization but also the weight coefficients are needed to be obtained prior to data detection. Meanwhile, the optimal weighting coefficients of WEDs are known to be energy values. Therefore, synchronization and the weighting coefficients can be obtained simultaneously. This paper proposes an S-WED and a simple synchronization algorithm for it in which sub-intervals having energies under a certain level are excluded in energy accumulation resulting in a simpler WED with a bit performance increase in low SNR region. The proposed algorithm is verified through simulations using the preamble symbol and channel models defined in the IEEE 802.15.4a.

  • The spectrum weighted responses of various detectors were calculated to provide guidance on the proper selection and use of survey instruments on the basis of their energy response characteristics on the neutron fields. To yield the spectrum weighted response, the detector response functions of 17 neutron-measuring devices were numerically folded with each of the produced calibration neutron spectra through the in-house developed software 'K-SWR'. The detectors' response functions were taken from the IAEA Technical Reports Series No. 403 (TRS-403). The reference neutron fields of 21 kinds with 2 spectra groups with different proportions of thermal and fast neutrons have been produced using neutrons from the $^{241}Am$-Be sources held in a graphite pile, a bare $^{241}Am$-Be source, and a DT neutron generator. Fluence-average energy ($E_{ave}$) varied from 3.8 MeV to 16.9 MeV, and the ambient-dose-equivalent rate [$H^*(10)/h$] varied from 0.99 to 16.5 mSv/h.

  • This paper presents a radiation-hardened-by-design preamplifier that utilizes a self-compensation technique with a charge-sensitive amplifier (CSA) and replica for total ionizing dose (TID) effects. The CSA consists of an operational amplifier (OPAMP) with a 6-bit binary weighted current source (BWCS) and feedback network. The replica circuit is utilized to compensate for the TID effects of the CSA. Two comparators can detect the operating point of the replica OPAMP and generate appropriate signals to control the switches of the BWCS. The proposed preamplifier was fabricated using a general-purpose complementary metal-oxide-silicon field effect transistor 0.18 ㎛ process and verified through a test up to 230 kGy (SiO2) at a rate of 10.46 kGy (SiO2)/h. The code of the BWCS control circuit varied with the total radiation dose. During the verification test, the initial value of the digital code was 39, and a final value of 30 was observed. Furthermore, the preamplifier output exhibited a maximum variation error of 2.39%, while the maximum rise-time error was 1.96%. A minimum signal-to-noise ratio of 49.64 dB was measured.

  • Mammography is commonly used for screening early breast cancer. However, mammographic images, which depend on the physical properties of breast components, are limited to provide information about whether a lesion is malignant or benign. Although a dual-energy subtraction technique decomposes a certain material from a mixture, it increases radiation dose and degrades the accuracy of material decomposition. In this study, we simulated a breast phantom using attenuation characteristics, and we proposed a technique to enable the accurate material decomposition by applying weighting factors for the dual-energy mammography based on a photon-counting detector using a Monte Carlo simulation tool. We also evaluated the contrast and noise of simulated breast images for validating the proposed technique. As a result, the contrast for a malignant tumor in the dual-energy weighted subtraction technique was 0.98 and 1.06 times similar than those in the general mammography and dual-energy subtraction techniques, respectively. However the contrast between malignant and benign tumors dramatically increased 13.54 times due to the low contrast of a benign tumor. Therefore, the proposed technique can increase the material decomposition accuracy for malignant tumor and improve the diagnostic accuracy of mammography.

  • Electronic warfare systems for extracting information of the threat signals can be employed under the circumstance where the power of the received signal is weak. To precisely and rapidly detect the threat signals, it is required to use methods exploiting whole energy of the received signals instead of conventional methods using a single received signal input. To utilize the whole energy, numerous sizes of windows need to be implemented in a detector for dealing with all possible unknown length of the received signal because it is assumed that there is no preliminary information of the uncooperative signals. However, this grid search method requires too large computational complexity to be practically implemented. In order to resolve this complexity problem, an approach that reduces the number of windows by selecting the smaller number of representative windows can be considered. However, each representative window in this approach needs to cover a certain amount of interval divided from the considering range. Consequently, the discordance between the length of the received signal and the window sizes results in degradation of the detection performance. Therefore, we propose the weighted energy detector which results in improved detection performance comparing with the conventional energy detector under circumstance where the window size is smaller than the length of the received signal. In addition, it is shown that the proposed method exhibits the same performance under other circumstances.

  • Radiation portal monitors (RPMs) installed at airports and harbors to prevent illicit trafficking of radioactive materials generally use large plastic scintillators. However, their energy resolution is poor and radionuclide identification is nearly unfeasible. In this study, to improve isotope identification, a RPM system based on a multi-array plastic scintillator and convolutional neural network (CNN) was evaluated by measuring the spectra of radioactive sources. A multi-array plastic scintillator comprising an assembly of 14 hexagonal scintillators was fabricated within an area of 50 × 100 cm2. The energy spectra of 137Cs, 60Co, 226Ra, and 4K (KCl) were measured at speeds of 10-30 km/h, respectively, and an energy-weighted algorithm was applied. For the CNN, 700 and 300 spectral images were used as training and testing images, respectively. Compared to the conventional plastic scintillator, the multi-arrayed detector showed a high collection probability of the optical photons generated inside. A Compton maximum peak was observed for four moving radiation sources, and the CNN-based classification results showed that at least 70% was discriminated. Under the speed condition, the spectral fluctuations were higher than those under dwelling condition. However, the machine learning results demonstrated that a considerably high level of nuclide discrimination was possible under source movement conditions.

  • Commercially used organic scintillation materials (1,4 di[2-(5phenyloxazolyl)] benzene) have low solubility in solvents and a wide emission energy range, which causes a decrease in detection efficiency. In this study, an organic liquid scintillator with improved detection efficiency was developed using 7-Diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin material to compensate for the disadvantages of existing organic scintillation detectors. And to evaluate the applicability of radiation measurement, the performance of a commercial plastic detector was compared. As a result of analyzing the 60Co detection characteristics by applying 7-Diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin as an alternative to 1,4 di[2-(5phenyloxazolyl)] benzene, the detection efficiency was improved around 2% compared with commercial scintillator when the 7-Diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin content was 0.04 wt%. Based on the results of this study, the possibility of improving detection efficiency through scintillator material modification was confirmed. In addition, since it is possible to discriminate nuclide through the spectrum correction algorithm, it will be possible to inspect and classify various decommissioning wastes generated during the decommissioning process.

  • Neutron dose assessment in criticality accidents using Whole Body Counter (WBC) was proved to be an effective method as rapid neutron dose estimation at the JCO criticality accident in Tokai-mura. The 1.36MeV gamma-ray of $^{24}Na$ in a body can be detected easily by a germanium detector. The Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA) of $^{24}Na$ is approximately 50Bq for 10miniute measurement by the germanium-type whole body counter at JNC Tokai Works. Neutron energy spectra at the typical shielding conditions in criticality accidents were calculated and the conversion factor, whole body activity-to-organ mass weighted neutron absorbed dose, corresponding to each condition were determined. The conversion factor for uncollied fission spectrum is 7.7 $[(Bq^{24}Na/g^{23}Na)/mGy]$.

  • In this study, we evaluated the performance of a commercial pixelated cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector for spectroscopy and identified its feasibility as a Compton camera for radiation monitoring in a nuclear power plant. The detection system consisted of a $20mm{\times}20mm{\times}5mm$ CZT crystal with $8{\times}8$ pixelated anodes and a common cathode, in addition to an application specific integrated circuit. The performance of the various radioisotopes $^{57}Co$, $^{133}Ba$, $^{22}Na$, and $^{137}Cs$ was evaluated. In general, the amplitude of the induced signal in a CZT crystal depends on the interaction position and material non-uniformity. To minimize this dependency, a drift time correction was applied. The depth of each interaction was calculated by the drift time and the positional dependency of the signal amplitude was corrected based on the depth information. After the correction, the Compton regions of each spectrum were reduced, and energy resolutions of 122 keV, 356 keV, 511 keV, and 662 keV peaks were improved from 13.59%, 9.56%, 6.08%, and 5%-4.61%, 2.94%, 2.08%, and 2.2%, respectively. For the Compton imaging, simulations and experiments using one $^{137}Cs$ source with various angular positions and two $^{137}Cs$ sources were performed. Individual and multiple sources of $^{133}Ba$, $^{22}Na$, and $^{137}Cs$ were also measured. The images were successfully reconstructed by weighted list-mode maximum likelihood expectation maximization method. The angular resolutions and intrinsic efficiency of the $^{137}Cs$ experiments were approximately $7^{\circ}-9^{\circ}$ and $5{\times}10^{-4}-7{\times}10^{-4}$, respectively. The distortions of the source distribution were proportional to the offset angle.
