Weed control is one of the important and difficult practices in environment-sound agriculture. This study was conducted to establish environment-sound weed control in paddy fields using rice bran pellet. Application of rice bran pellet at a rate of 1${\sim}$3 Mg $ha^{-1}$ reduced weed occurrence by 46${\sim}$69% without using any chemical herbicide. However, rice bran application at a rate of greater than 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$ increased protein content in milled rice and decreased palatability value. Therefore, fertilization rate before transplanting needs to be reduced from $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ = 55-45-40 kg $ha^{-1}$ to 28-23-20 kg $ha^{-1}$, in order to decrease protein content and increase palatability value without decreasing rice yield. Pyroligneous acid and brown rice vinegar had a relatively weak activity to inhibit weed emergence compared with rice bran. When butachlor herbicide was applied at a rate of 0.75 kg $ha^{-1}$, 50% of recommended rate, co-application of rice bran pellet at a rate of 1 Mg $ha^{-1}$ enhanced weed control value from 63% to 75%.

The survey of weed occurrence was conducted to identify problematic weed species on the paddy field. Total 524 sites of the 17 regions in Chungnam Province in Korea were investigated from June to August, 2013. In the whole region, 23 weed species were identified including 19 annuals and 4 perennials. The most dominant weed species in Chungnam paddy fields were Echinochloa crus-galli (25.3%), followed by Monochoria vaginalis (11.9%), Eleocharis kuroguwai (10.3%), Bidens tripartite (9.3%) and Aneilema japonicum (8.5%). The 95.2% of the investigation sites was determined under dominance value 1 (range of cover <10: numerous individuals) by Braun-Branquet indicating proper weed control in the paddy fields. This information could be useful for estimation of future weed occurrence, weed population dynamics and establishment of weed control methods in Chungnam Province in Korea.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate effective weed control in direct-seeded rice under dry fields. The results obtained are as follows. Cyhalofop/bentazone EW and cyhalofop/pendimethalin EC were very effective for the weed control but cyhalofop/cinosulfuron WP and cyhalofop/azimsulfuron SC were tended to exhibit the lower weeding effect. The plant height and the tiller number of rice were not greatly affected by herbicides, but rice yield was greatly influenced by them. The control efficacy was observed the extend of 94% until 60days after seeding under the treatment of systematic herbicides such as foliar applied pendimethalin propanil EC at 15days after seeding mowed by pyrazosulfuron molinate GR at 5days after irrigation. Irrigation at 25days after seeding was able to control annual weeds by the extent of 25% and exhibited control effect of 94% on systematic treatment of herbicides compared with that of 35days after seeding.

This experiment was conducted to investigate weed infestation and to determine effective weed control methods in direct-seeded rice. Twenty two weed species occurred in dry- and water-seeded rice, which was mainly composed of annual weeds. Dominant weed species in dry-seeded rice were Cyperus difformis, Echinochloa crus-galli, Aneilema keisak and Digitaria sanguinalis in discending order. Dominant weed species in water-seeded lice were E. crus-galli, C. difformis, Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides. E. crus-galli emerged at 7 days after sowing. In water-seeded rice, E. crus-galli emerged at 5 days after sowing, and M vaginalis, S. juncoides and C. difformis at 8~10 days after sowing. Mean days to emerge important weeds was 20 days in dry-seeded rice and 13 days in water-seeded rice. Leaf development of weeds was faster than that of rice in dry-seeded rice. In water-seeded rice, E eras-galli was more vigorous than rice, but leaf development of other weeds were slower than that of rice. Changes in number of weeds and dry weight oil weed species varied depending upon weed species in the direct-seeded rice. Dry weight of weeds were increased greatly from 30 days to 60 days after sowing in dry-seeded rice. Number of weeds tended to increase up to 40 days after sowing drastically, and then trend of the increase was dull thereafter. Dry weight and number of weeds increased up to 20~60 days after sowing in water-seeded rice. Most effective herbicide treatments was foliar application of cyhalofop/bentazon at 20 days after sowing followed by fenoxaprop/bentazon at 45 days after sowing in dry-seeded rice. All herbicide treatments except foliar applications were very effective to control weeds in water-seeded rice. Slight phytotoxicity was observed in foliar applied fenoxaprop/bentazon at 45 days after sowing in water-seeded rice, but it did not affect rice yield.
This experiment was carried out to establish effective weed control system in the cultivation of Coix lachryma-jobi L. The effect of annual weeds artificially transplanted on the growth of Coix lachryma-jobi L. were that the higher the density of weeds, the lower the yield considerably by reducing number of grains and tillers per plant. Among four weeds of Echinochloa crusgalli galli P. BEAUV., Digitaria sanguinalis $S_{COPOL}$., Chenopodium album L., and Portulaca oleracea L., weed of Portulaca oleracea L. reduced adlay yield most by 182.6kg/10a and it was judged to be the most injurious weed to adlay production. Among four weed control systems, which are one herbicide treatment, one herbicide treatment + one cultivating work with cultivator, two times cultivating work with cultivator and two times hand-weeding, the control system of 'one herbicide treatment + one cultivating work with cultivator' showed the lowest amount of weed growth by 7.34 weeds per $m^2$ in comparison with control plot of 35.00 weeds per $m^2$. Among four weed control systems, the system of 'two times hand-weeding' had much more amount of light penetration in adlay canopy with 791.9 mol than any other systems.
This study was conducted to obtain basic information needed to develop the effective weed control method by using thermal weeder which uses LPG as fuel. For survey of weed distribution in herb field, weed species were investigated at two kinds of herb field of Codonopsis lanveolata and Aster scaber located in Hoengseongkun and Hwacheonkun, Kangwondo. In Codonopsis lanveolata field, Digitaria sanguinalis and Persicaria viridis L were dominated. In Aster scaber field, Digitaria sanguinalis and Erigeron canadensis were dominated. In general, Grasses weeds in herb were more dominated than other broadleaf and Cyperaceae weeds. The treatments of $H_2SO_4$ in weed seeds were more effective for germination of several weeds, compared with that nontreated weed seeds. However, the rate of germination differed depending on weed species and tereatment time of $H_2SO_4. Also, viability of weed seeds was significantly affected by irradiation time and temperature. As the temterature and treatment time of irradiation increased, the rate of germination was decreased.

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of two different formulations and application timings of benzobicyclon+penoxsulam+pyrzaosulfuron-ethyl (BPP) in rice field. BPP granule (GR) and tablet (TB) controlled more than 90% of four weed species 10 and 15 days after sowing in direct seeding when compared with untreated control. BPP TB was highly effective to control herbicide resistant Scirpus juncoides and Monochoria vaginalis both 10 and 15 days after transplanting (DAT). BPP GR controlled 94.0 and 96.5% of S. juncoides and M. vaginalis, respectively 10 DAT, but its efficacy decreased to 88.5 and 49.8% respectively 15 DAT. When compared with untreated control, no visual injuries were detected at 255 and 510 g a.i./ha of BPP. The yield of rice increased in both BPP GR and TB in transplanting and direct seeding rice cultivation when compared with untreated control. Based on these data, early application (10 DAT) of BPP GR and TB can be applied to provide effective weed control, especially in the field infested with herbicide resistant weed species.

As the world marks the adoption of the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change, a promising movement for carbon neutrality is taking shape. This agreement would be needed to build a truly global coalition for carbon neutrality by 2050. Greenhouse gas(GHGs) emissions from agriculture come from livestock such as cows, agricultural soils and rice production has been reported by 10% in 2019. Rice cultivation would be reduced a GHGs and thus this research has conducted to minimize the emission of greenhouse gas with the mulching methodology using a biodegradable film in dry hill seeded rice and to conserve the environment through a cultural and ecological weed control instead of chemicals. We have developed the 5th mulching dry hill seeder with the biodegradable film to determine the possibility of stable rice cultivation. There were so many difficulties and constraints in the field operations such as film mulching, hill seeding and effective weed control. The mulching dry hill seeder was so good performance in the 5th trial but the biodegradable film tested was so faster in terms of biodegradation before the heading stage of the rice plant and thus there was not highly effective weed control which is ongoing research with a good performance since 2020.
This study was conducted to evaluate weed control effect in organic soybean upland field as affected by cover crops including rye, hairyvetch, and its mixture. The experiment was conducted during two years (2015 and 2016) at the NAS (National Institute of Agricultural Sciences) organic farming experimental field. The cover crops were seeded after tillage at fall crop season in 2014, and then, the soybean field was managed with no tillage system from 2015. The weed suppression rates of cover crops application for rye and mixture (rye+hairyvetch) treatment during 60 days after transplanting were 80% and 30%, respectively. However, weed suppression rate of hairyvetch treatment was not significantly different as compared to control. Weed flora in experimental field were less than general soybean field. The average organic soybean yield was generally low compare to normal year, nevertheless, the soybean yield for rye and mixture treatment in 2016 were significantly higher than PE mulching treatment.
Field experiment were carried out to elucidate the changes of weed occurrence according to the sowing time and to establish the efficient weed control system in dry seeded rice cultivation. E crus-galli and D. sanguinalis are tow major weeds at the earlier sowings, but C. difformis was dominating at the later sowing. In the case of E. crus-galli, there was a tendency of gaining its dominance values as the rice growth stage advances. The later the sowing time was, the more weeds occurred at the early rice growth stages: However, when measured at heading, total dry weight was greater at the earlier sowings. Yield loss due to weeds were also greater at the earlier sowings. Community diversity of weeds was greater at the later sowings, while specific weed was gradually dominating as rice growth stage advances, regardless of sowing time. When herbicides were applied before 15 DAS, weeds were effectively controlled only upto 35 DAS. So systemic herbicide application, one on 0 to 10 DAS and the other on just after flooding, appeared to be recommendable in direct seeded rice cultivation.
