  • Modeling and Simulation(M&S) technology has been widely used to solve constraints such as time, space, safety, and cost when we implement the same development and test environments as real warfare environments to develop, test, and evaluate weapon systems for the last several decades. The integration and test environments employed for development and test & evaluation are required to provide Live Virtual Construction(LVC) simulation environments for carrying out requirement analysis, design, integration, test and verification. Additionally, they are needed to provide computing environments which are possible to reconfigure computing resources and software components easily according to test configuration changes, and to run legacy software components independently on specific hardware and software environments. In this paper, an Integration Test and Simulation for Engagement Control(ITSEC) bed using a bare-metal virtualization mechanism is proposed to meet the above test and simulation requirements, and it is applied and implemented for an air missile defense system. The engagement simulation experiment results conducted on air and missile defense environments demonstrate that the proposed bed is a sufficiently cost-effective and feasible solution to reconfigure and expand application software and computing resources in accordance with various integration and test environments.

  • As the increasing demand for high-quality software, there is huge requiring for quality certification of international standards, industrial functional safety (IEC 61508), automotive (ISO 26262), embedded software guidelines for weapon systems, etc., in the industry. Software companies are very difficult to systematically acquire the quality certification in terms of cost and manpower of Startup, venture small-sized companies. For their companies one test case automatic generation is considered as a core technique to evaluate or improve software quality. This paper proposes a test case automatic generation method based on the design decision table for system and software design verification. We apply the proposed method with OMG's standard techniques of metamodel and model transformation for automatically generating test cases. To do this, we design the metamodels of design decision table (Model) and test case document (Text) and define model transformation to automatically generate test cases, which will expect to easily work MC/DC coverage.

  • As an effective weapon system for anti-submarine warfare, DIrectional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) sonobuoy detects underwater targets via beamforming with three channels composed of an omni-direcitonal and two directional channels. However, ambient noise degrades the detection performance of DIFAR sonobouy in specific direction (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°). Thus, an ambient noise redcution technique is proposed for performance improvement of acoustic target detection of DIFAR sonobuoy. The proposed method is based on OTA (Order Truncate Average), which is widely used in sonar signal processing area, for ambient noise estimation and Wiener filtering, which is widely used in speech signal processing area, for noise reduction. For evaluation, we compare mean square errors of target bearing estmation results of conventional and proposed methods and we confirmed that the proposed method is effective under 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio.

  • In the era of Fourth Industrial Revolution, secure networking technology is playing an essential role in the defense weapon systems. Encryption technology is used for information security. The safety of cryptographic technology, according to Kerchoff's principles, is based on secure key management of cryptographic technology, not on cryptographic algorithms. However, traditional centralized key management is one of the problematic issues in battlefield environments since the frequent movement of the forces and the time-varying quality of tactical networks. Alternatively, the system resources of each node used in the IoBT(Internet of Battlefield Things) environment are limited in size, capacity, and performance, so a lightweight key management system with less computation and complexity is needed than a conventional key management algorithm. This paper proposes a novel key escrow scheme in a lightweight manner for the IoBT environment. The safety and performance of the proposed technique are verified through numerical analysis and simulations.

  • The AR/VR-based education and training system is expected to contribute greatly to accident prevention and budget reduction as well as practical training effects similar to the battlefield environment. Research to use AR/VR for learning is ongoing, and technology can be improved without experiencing failures that can occur in the real world. Major advanced countries in defense recognized the advantages of AR/VR technology early on, and developed and utilized systems using them in various fields, from mastery of individual weapon system operation to comprehensive combat training systems, war history education, and post-traumatic stress treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the cases of AR/VR application education and training in advanced defense countries and to draw implications for the South Korean military.

  • This paper describes the cumulative deposition of fallout Pu in soil and lichen at the present time and give the characteristics of fallout Pu deposits in the soil. In the soil of the forest, the accumulated depositions of $^{239,240}Pu$ were estimated to be in the range of 34.0 to $101.2Bq\;m^{-2}$ with an average value of $65.3{\pm}21.6Bq\;m^{-2}$. The average inventory of $^{239,240}Pu$ in the forest was calculated to be two times higher than that in the hill. Also, the deposited activities of $^{239,240}Pu$ in cultivated soil were significantly lower than those in the hill or forest. However, the cumulative depositions of fallout Pu in the volcanic ash soil on Cheju Island were much higher than those in the forest and hill soils. The measured activity concentrations of Pu isotopes in lichens and mosses showed large variations, due to characteristics of species and life span of lichen and moss colonies. From depth profiles, it was found that most of the fallout Pu has been accumulated in upper 10 cm layer of soil. Except for a few cases, the concentrations of $^{239,240}Pu$ in soil tended to decrease exponentially with increasing soil depth. Among parameters affecting the cumulative deposition of fallout Pu, organic substances and rainfall play an important role in the retention and relative mobility of fallout Pu in the soil. However, pH showed a weak correlation with the deposition of fallout Pu in the soil. From sequential leaching experiments, Pu was found to be associated predominantly with the "organic" and "oxy-hydroxy" fractions. Both the activity ratios of $^{238}Pu/^{239,240}Pu$ and $^{241}Pu/^{239,240}Pu$ in soils, lichens and mosses and the atomic ratios of $^{240}Pu/^{239}Pu$ in soils are close to those observed in the cumulative deposit global fallout from nuclear weapon testings. The results obtained from this research make it possible to interpret and predict the behavior of fallout Pu under natural conditions.

  • The 4th Industrial Revolution and the continuous development of Science and Technology have also required a speedy business promotion method in the defense industry. Advanced countries including the United States are already boldly innovating the existing high-cost and long-term acquisition system with the highest priority in weapons development to cope with the military rise of Russia and China. The Ministry of National Defense and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration have also recently introduced a quick acquisition system and are applying it to business promotion. In addition, some small-scale projects and weapons systems are being reorganized so that they can be managed by the units demanding them. After an organizational diagnosis of the Project Acquisition Group by the Ministry of National Defense in 2020, it has been reassigned as a subordinate unit of the Army Logistics Command from a direct unit managed by the Army HQ. As a result, problems such as work conflict or redundancy have been identified. In addition, a system has been implemented to shorten the acquisition period by applying a rapid acquisition program in the field of weapons systems by benchmarking the rapid acquisition program of advanced countries. The force support system project process will also need to introduce such a quick acquisition system. In addition, the Ministry of National Defense is considering ways to delegate some weapon systems to each military, which will then carry out tasks ranging from requirements determination to project management. Accordingly, it is now time to expand the organization for the management of the Army's weapons system acquisition project. Therefore, in this paper, the Army Project Acquisition Group was analyzed on its organization, acquisition procedures, and cooperation systems, with presentations of development plans for each field.

  • In principle, data from all databases and systems managed by the Ministry of Defense or public institutions must be guaranteed to have a certain level of quality or higher, but since most information systems are built and operated, data quality management for all systems is realistically limited. Most defense data is not disclosed due to the nature of the work, and many systems are strategically developed or integrated and managed by the military depending on the need and importance of the work. In addition, many types of data that require data quality management are being accumulated and generated, such as sensor data generated from weapon systems, unstructured data, and artificial intelligence learning data. However, there is no data quality management guide for defense data and a guide for selecting quality control targets, and the selection criteria are ambiguous to select databases and systems for quality control of defense data according to the standards of the public data quality management manual. Depends on the person in charge. Therefore, this paper proposes criteria for selecting a target system for quality control of defense data, and describes the relationship between the proposed selection criteria and the selection criteria in the existing manual.
