  • The direct calculation method is generalized to the excited-state diffusion-influenced reversible reaction of a neutral and a charged particle under an external field with two different lifetimes and quenching in three dimensions. The present method provides an alternative way to calculate the binding probability density functions and the survival probabilities from the corresponding irreversible results. The solutions are obtained as the series solutions by the diagonal approximation due to the anisotropy of the unidirectional external field. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with those of the previous study [S. Y. Reigh et al. J. Chem. Phys. 132, 164112 (2010)] within a weak field limit. The solutions of two approaches show qualitatively the same overall behavior including the power laws at long times.

  • We investigate the multiplicity of $2{\pi}$-periodic solutions of the nonlinear Hamiltonian system with almost polynomial and exponential potentials, $\dot{z}=J(G^{\prime}(z)+h(t))$, where $z:R{\rightarrow}R^{2n}$, $\dot{z}=\frac{dz}{dt}$, $J=\(\array{0&-I\\I&o}\)$, I is the identity matrix on $R^n$, $H:R^{2n}{\rightarrow}R$, and $H_z$ is the gradient of H. We look for the weak solutions $z=(p,q){\in}E$ of the nonlinear Hamiltonian system.

  • Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted on a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) for more than 2.5 yr using inorganic salt solutions to evaluate how the long-term hydraulic conductivity is affected by cation concentration and valence. Only small changes (i.e., $\leq$ 2X) in hydraulic conductivity (K) occurred during the test duration when the permeant solution was deionized (DI) water or 100 mM KCl and NaCl solutions. For weak CaCl$_2$ solutions ($\leq$ 20 mM), the hydraulic conductivities initially (< 0.2 yr) were comparable to the hydraulic conductivity obtained with DI water, but gradually increased by a factor of 2 to 13 over a period of nearly 2 yr. In contrast, the GCL permeated with strong CaCl$_2$ solutions ($\geq$ 50 mM) reached equilibrium nearly immediately, with a hydraulic conductivity approximately 2 orders of magnitude higher than the hydraulic conductivity to DI water.

  • Dental professions are considered high risk for contracting hepatitis infection. In Korea, many patients are hepatitis B virus carriers. HBV are most efficiently transmitted by blood. Root canal treatment, as in cases of acute pulpitis always accompanied by contaminated blood. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to use irrigation solutions having strong antiviral effect for prophylaxis both dental personnel and patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antiviral effect of seven root canal irrigation solutions by radioimmunometric test. The solutions were 5% sodium phyochlorite, 5% cresol, 2% glutaraldehyde, 3% hydrogen peroxide, 0.05% chlorohexidine, 10% iodine, and 70% isoprophyl alcohol. Each irrigation solutions was mixed with serum preparated from HBsAg positive patients and sera were diluted to 1:1. 1:4. 1:20 and 1:100. Percentage of radioactivity was assayed with AUK(Sorbin biomedica, Italy) and COBRA(Packwood Instrument company, USA). Sodium hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde showed most strong antivral activity against HBsAg. Isoprophyl alcohol had moderate antiviral effect and the effect and the effect was increased especially in 1:4 solution. Hydrogen peroxide exihibited very weak aintivral activity. Cresol, chlorohexidine, and iodine exhibited little antiviral activity.

  • Embedded system testing, especially long-term reliability testing, of flash memory solutions such as embedded multi-media card, secure digital card and solid-state drive involves strategic decision making related to test sample size to achieve high test coverage. The test sample size is the number of flash memory devices used in a test. Earlier, there were physical limitations on the testing period and the number of test devices that could be used. Hence, decisions regarding the sample size depended on the experience of human testers owing to the absence of well-defined standards. Moreover, a lack of understanding of the importance of the sample size resulted in field defects due to unexpected user scenarios. In worst cases, users finally detected these defects after several years. In this paper, we propose that a large number of potential field defects can be detected if an adequately large test sample size is used to target weak features during long-term reliability testing of flash memory solutions. In general, a larger test sample size yields better results. However, owing to the limited availability of physical resources, there is a limit on the test sample size that can be used. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing a self-adaptive reliability testing scheme to decide the sample size for effective long-term reliability testing.

  • The inelastic earthquake response of existing, reinforced concrete buildings with an open ground story, designed according to the old Greek codes, is investigated before and after their seismic strengthening with steel braces restricted to the open ground stories. The seismic performance evaluation is based on Part 3 of Eurocode 8 for assessment and retrofitting of buildings. Three and five-story, symmetric and non-symmetric buildings are subjected to a set of seven pairs of synthetic accelerograms, compatible with the design spectrum, and conclusions are drawn regarding the effectiveness of the strengthening solutions. Seismic behavior of the selected models confirms results of previous work regarding the insufficient capacity of the open ground stories for design level earthquakes. It is also shown that strengthening only the weak ground story, a choice having the substantial advantage of low cost and continued usage of the building during its seismic retrofitting, can remove the inherent weakness without shifting the problem to the stories above and thus making such buildings at least as strong as those without a weak first story. This partial strengthening is possible for symmetric as well as eccentric buildings, in which torsion plays a further detrimental role.

  • We consider a weakly coupled system of singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equations with discontinuous source term. The diffusion term of each equation is associated with a small positive parameter of different magnitude. Presence of discontinuity and different parameters creates boundary and weak interior layers that overlap and interact. A numerical method is constructed for this problem which involves an appropriate piecewise uniform Shishkin mesh. The numerical approximations are proved to converge to the continuous solutions uniformly with respect to the singular perturbation parameters. Numerical results are presented which illustrates the theoretical results.

  • We are concerned with the following fractional p-Laplacian inclusion: $$(-{\Delta})^s_pu+V(x){\mid}u{\mid}^{p-2}u{\in}{\lambda}[{\underline{f}}(x,u(x)),\;{\bar{f}}(s,u(x))]$$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^N$, where $(-{\Delta})^s_p$ is the fractional p-Laplacian operator, 0 < s < 1 < p < $+{\infty}$, sp < N, and $f:{\mathbb{R}}^N{\times}{\mathbb{R}}{\rightarrow}{\mathbb{R}}$ is measurable with respect to each variable separately. We show that our problem with the discontinuous nonlinearity f admits at least one or two nontrivial weak solutions. In order to do this, the main tool is the Berkovits-Tienari degree theory for weakly upper semicontinuous set-valued operators. In addition, our main assertions continue to hold when $(-{\Delta})^s_pu$ is replaced by any non-local integro-differential operator.

  • We introduce two iterative algorithms for finding a common element of the set of fixed points of an asymptotically k-strict pseudo-contraction and the set of solutions of a mixed equilibrium problem in a Hilbert space. We obtain some weak and strong convergence theorems by using the proposed iterative algorithms. Our results extend and improve the corresponding results of Tada and Takahashi [16] and Kim and Xu [8, 9].
