  • Using monthly total ozone data obtained from a Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) onboard the Nimbus-7 and Earth Probe satellite, this study examined the trend in the total amount of global ozone during two periods: from 1979-1992 [Early period] and 1997-2002 [Latter period]. The Annual average of total ozone during the Early period was globally reduced by about 10 DU compared to the amount during the Latter, except in some areas between the equator and 20 N. Global trends of total ozone showed a decrease of -6.30 DU/decade during 1979-1992, and an increase of 0.12 DU/decade during 1997-2002. Its enhancement during the Latter period was especially noticeable in tropical areas. The EOF analyses of total ozone from this period indicated signs of temporal/spatial variability, associated with the phenomena of Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), Quasi-Triennial Oscillation (QTO), El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and volcanic eruption. Seasonal profiles of tropospheric ozone in the tropics obtained from ozonesondes, showed the spatial pattern of zonal wavenumber one. Overall, this study may be useful in analyzing possible causes in the variations of statospheric and tropospheric ozone.

  • This thesis deals with a method to solve a two-and-one-half-dimensional ($2\frac12$ D) problem, which means that the ocean environment is two-dimensional whereas the source is fully three-dimensionally propagating, including three-dimensional refraction phenomena and three-dimensional back-scattering, using two-dimensional two-way parabolic equation method combined with Fourier synthesis. Two dimensional two-way parabolic equation method uses Galerkin's method for depth and Crank-Nicolson method and alternating direction for range and provides a solution available to range-dependent problem with wave-field back-scattered from discontinuous interface. Since wavenumber, k, is the function of depth and vertical or horizontal range, we can reduce a dimension of three-dimensional Helmholtz equation by Fourier transforming in the range direction. Thus transformed two-dimensional Helmholtz equation is solved through two-way parabolic equation method. Finally, we can have the $2\frac12$ D solution by inverse Fourier transformation of the spectral solution gained from in the last step. Numerical simulation has been carried out for a canonical ocean environment with stair-step bottom in order to test its accuracy using the present analysis. With this spectral parabolic equation method, we have examined three-dimensional acoustic propagation properties in a specified site in the Korean Straits.

  • This study measured the emissivity spectra of 5 major rock-forming minerals using a Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer in the spectral region of $650{\sim}1400cm^{-1}$. The mineral samples are quartz, albite, bytownite, anorthite, and sandstone. We compared emissivity spectra measured in this study with spectra provided by Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Arizona State University (ASU). The spectral features of emissivity such as Reststrahlen Band (RB) and Christiansen Feature (CF) locations were compared. Results showed that both CF and RB locations of emissivity spectra measured in this study were similar to those from ASTER and ASU. In the case of quartz, the RB was occurred in the region of $700{\sim}850cm^{-1}$ and $1050{\sim}1250cm^{-1}$. The spectral position of emissivity peak was in good agreement with the location of ASTER and ASU. For plagioclase (albite, bytownite, and anorthite), the spectral location of CF was shifted toward larger wavenumber and the emissivity value was increased in the region of $870{\sim}1200cm^{-1}$ with Ca percentage. The CF of anorthite and bytownite was occurred at $1245.79cm^{-1}$, and that of albite was occurred at $1283.79cm^{-1}$. We also confirmed that emissivity feature of sandstone includes both emissivity features of quartz and calcite. However, there were some differences in the magnitude of emissivity and locations of RB and CF. These were due to the differences in measurement methods, and differences in particle size and temperature of samples.

  • By using the liquid -phase-deposition (LPD) process, which has a potetnial of preparing organic inorganic composite materials, samples doped with benzo[f]quinoline (BfQ)into silica thia films wre prepared. We observed the fluorescene and fluorescene excitation spectra of the samples, as well as the fluorescence lifetimes and time-resoluved fluorescence spectra. The comparison of thefluorescence spectra in pH-controlled buffer solutions yields the results that the dominant species of BfQ in the LPD silica films is a protonated one. The fluorescence band assigned to a hydrogen-bonded species was observed on the samples prepared from the dipping solutions of 3 and 2 M hexafluorosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the fluorescence lifetime measurement. The FT-IR M hexaflurosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the flurescence lifetime meausurement. The FT-IR data proved the existence of included water in silica films prepared from the LPD process. The appearance of the band corresponding to the hydrogen-bonded species within LPD silica phases was explained by the proesence of included water. Depending on the preparation conditions of LPD silica films, the band assigned to protonated species shows bad shifts in a wavenumber region between the peak of hydrogen-bonded and typical protonated species. This implies that there is some distribution of steric conformation of protonated species of BfQ interacting with adsorbing sites of LPD silica. The time -resolved fluorescence spectra suggest that some relaxation process is involved in the conformation of BfQ doped into the solid phase of LPD silica.

  • Clinopyroxene in the Geodo mine belongs to diopside-hedenbergite series. It is widely distributed throughout the mine area together with garnet and is also closely related with Fe-mineralization. Clinopyroxenes in the Geodo mine including two samples from the sangdong and Ulchin Mines are studied using polarized microscope, EPMA, XRD, and IR spectroscopy for occurrence, chemistry, structure, and crystal chemistry. Especially, variations in unit-cell parameters are examined in relation with the substitution scheme between Fe and Mg cations. Clinopyroxenes in the Geodo mine occur in both endoskarn and exoskarn zone. It is mostly anhedral to subhedral with fine- to medium-grained in texture, but some have bigger crystals of short prismatic or columnar habits. Clinopyroxene occurs as monomineralic or is associated with mostly garnet and sometimes with actinolite, magnetite, epidote, and chlorite. Chemical analysis reveals that the Geodo clinopyroxene is diopsidic in composition (Di: 65-96%). This fact is in good contrast with garnet chemistry showing mostly andraditic (An: 41-82%). Especially, clinopyroxene coexisting with magnetite belongs to nearly end member diopside (Di: 97-99%). Thus, diopside-andradite pair indicates that Geodo skarns were formed under the reduced environment. X-ray diffraction analysis shows unit-cell parameters vary with increase of Fe contents: a = 9.765-9.838$\AA$, b = 8.943-9.020$\AA$, c= 5.240-5.253$\AA$.$\beta$ = 105.70-104.83$^{\circ}$, and V =440.64-448.19$\AA$3. It is noted from the least square regression that a, b and V increase linearly with increase of Fe content, while $\beta$ slightly decreases and c remains nearly unchanged as change in Fe content. These trends are to difference between synthetic and natural clinopyroxenes. This fact is also recognized in IR spectra which show a slight shift of several absorption bands toward lower wavenumber region with increasing Fe content.

  • Wave characteristics in the presence of energy damping are investigated using the linear shallow water equations. To get the phase and energy velocities, geometric optics approach is used and then these values are validated through numerical experiments. Energy damping affects wave height, phase and energy velocities which result in wave transformation. When the complex wavenumber is used by the Eulerian approach, it is found that the phase velocity decreases as the damping increases while the energy velocity increases showing higher values than the phase velocity. When the complex angular frequency is used by the Lagrangian approach, the energy-damping wave group is found to propagate in the energy velocity. The energy velocity is found to affect shoaling and refraction coefficient which is verified through numerical experiments for waves on a plane slope.

  • The purpose of this experiment was the physical properties of rubber compounds with DPCB and pure carbon black. Si-O peak in the silcia surface was observed at the range of wavenumber from 1,100 to 1,200 in the DPCB by FT-IR analysis. Cure rate of rubber compounds containing DPCB and organic silane coupling agent were (Si69) delayed compared with those containing pure carbon black. 300% modulus and interaction coefficient of DPCB with silane coupling agent were higher than those of pure carbon black and PICO weight loss amount showed constant value. It was found that $0^{\circ}C$ tan$\delta$ of rubber compounds with DPCB was larger than those of pure carbon black at 2.0% silane coupling agent based on 50 phr DPCB and $60^{\circ}C$ tan$\delta$ of rubber compounds with DPCB decreased as increasing the usage coupling agent. Consequently, it is postulated that DPCB is strong candidate material for lowering rolling resistance under constant abrasion resistance.

  • This study investigates robust features of interdecadal changes in the Northern hemisphere summer tropical-extratropical teleconnection occurred around the mid-to-late 1990s by analyzing four different reanalysis data for atmospheric circulation and temperature, two precipitation reconstructions, and two sea surface temperature (SST) data during the satellite observation era of 1980~2017. For the last 38 years, there has been a significant increasing trend in anticyclonic circulation at lower and upper troposphere and 2 m air temperature with wavenumber-5 Rossby wave structure in the Northern Hemisphere (NH) extratropics. The increase has been accompanied with the significant weakening and northward shift of jet stream over Eurasia and the North Pacific. It is further found that there has been a significant interdecadal shift occurred around the mid-to-late 1990s in the two distinct modes of tropical-extratropical teleconnection: Western Pacific-North America (WPNA) and circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) pattern. After mid-to-late 1990s, the WPNA has played more important role in modulating the extratropical atmospheric circulation and surface climate, which has been preferentially occurred during the El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) decaying or transition summer such as 1998, 2010 and 2016. During these summers, severe heat waves were occurred over many parts of the NH extratropics due to the combined effect of the increasing trend in the barotropic anticyclonic circulation and the significant WPNA across the NH. Although weakened, the CGT also contributed to some of hot summers over many parts of the NH extratropics such as 1999, 2000, 2008, 2011, and 2012 when weak to moderate La $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ was persisted.

  • In this paper, a method to approximate a multi-layer Green's function is proposed based on a FDTD scheme and a rational function approximation. For a given horizontal propagation wavenumber, time domain response is calculated and then Fourier transformed to the spectral domain Green's function. Using the rational function approximation, the pole and residue of the Green's function can be estimated, which are crucial for a calculation of a path loss. The proposed method can provide a wideband Green's function, while the conventional normal mode method can be applied to a single frequency problem. To validate the proposed method, We consider two problems, one of which has a analytical solution. The other is about multi-layer case, for which the proposed method is compared with the known normal mode solution, Kraken.

  • This paper derives the insertion loss for the bubble layer of an air bubble curtain and an air masker which are used to reduce ocean anthropogenic noise such as the piling noise and the ship noise. The air bubble curtain is considered as a 'fluid-air bubble layer-fluid' model and the environment for the air masker is simplified as an 'vacuum-thin plate-fluid-air bubble layer-fluid' model. The air bubble layer in each model is assumed as the effective medium which has the complex wavenumber and the complex impedance corresponding to the bubble population distribution. The numerical simulations are performed to examine the insertion loss depending on the bubble population, the void fraction, and the thickness of the layer.
