In this paper, we propose an efficient method for personal identification by analyzing iris patterns that have a high level of stability and distinctiveness. To improve the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed system, we present a new approach to making a feature vector compact and efficient by using wavelet transform, and two straightforward but efficient mechanisms for a competitive learning method such as a weight vector initialization and the winner selection. With all of these novel mechanisms, the experimental results showed that the proposed system could be used for personal identification in an efficient and effective manner.

In this paper, we propose a fault diagnosis algorithm of induction motors by DFT and wavelet. We extract a feature vector using a fault pattern extraction method by DFT in frequency domain and wavelet transform in time-frequency domain. And then we deal with a fusion algorithm for the feature vectors extracted from DFT and wavelet to classify the faults of induction motors. Finally, we provide an experimental results that the proposed algorithm can be successfully applied to classify the several fault signals acquired from induction motors.
We propose an efficient algorithm for an interactive content-based image retrieval using relevance feedback. In the proposed algorithm, a new query feature vector first is yielded from the average feature vector of the relevant images that is fed back from the result images of the previous retrieval. Each component weight of a feature vector is computed from an inverse of standard deviation for each component of the relevant images. The updated feature vector of the query and the component weights are used in the iterative retrieval process. In addition, the irrelevant images are excluded from object images in the next iteration to obtain additional performance improvement. In order to evaluate the retrieval performance of the proposed method, we experiment for three image databases, that is, Corel, Vistex, and Ultra databases. We have chosen wavelet moments, BDIP and BVLC, and MFS as features representing the visual content of an image. The experimental results show that the proposed method yields large precision improvement.
In this paper, an efficient feature vector extraction method and MLP neural network are utilized to automatically detect and classify power quality disturbances, where the proposed classification procedure consists of the following three parts: i.e., (i) PQ disturbance detection using discrete wavelet transform. (ii) feature vector extraction from the detected disturbance. using several methods, such as FFT, DWT, Fisher's criterion. etc.. and (iii) classification of the corresponding type of each PQ disturbance by recognizing the pattern of the extracted feature vector. To demonstrate the performance and, applicability of the proposed classification algorithm. some test results obtained by analyzing 10-class PQ disturbances are also provided.

In this paper, we propose novel seabed sediment classification algorithm using feature obtained by continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Contrast to previous researches using direct reflection coefficient of seabed which is function of frequency and is highly influenced by sediment types, we develop an algorithm using both direct reflection signal and backscattering signal. In order to obtain feature vector, we employ CWT of the signal and obtain histograms extracted from local binary patterns of the scalogram. The proposed algorithm also adopts principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce dimension of the feature vector so that it requires low computational cost to classify seabed sediment. For training and classification, we adopts K-means clustering algorithm which can be done with low computational cost and does not require prior information of the sediment. To verify the proposed algorithm, we obtain field data measured at near Jeju island and show that the proposed classification algorithm has reliable discrimination performance by comparing the classification results with actual physical properties of the sediments.

This paper aims to present a supervised classification algorithm based on data fusion for the segmentation of the textured images. The feature extraction method we used is based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT). In the segmentation stage, the estimated feature vector of each pixel is sent to the support vector machine (SVM) classifier for initial labeling. To obtain a more accurate segmentation result, two strategies based on information fusion were used. We first integrated decision-level fusion strategies by combining decisions made by the SVM classifier within a sliding window. In the second strategy, the fuzzy set theory and rules based on probability theory were used to combine the scores obtained by SVM over a sliding window. Finally, the performance of the proposed segmentation algorithm was demonstrated on a variety of synthetic and real images and showed that the proposed data fusion method improved the classification accuracy compared to applying a SVM classifier. The results revealed that the overall accuracies of SVM classification of textured images is 88%, while our fusion methodology obtained an accuracy of up to 96%, depending on the size of the data base.
The structural monitoring of multi-wire strands is of importance to prestressed concrete structures and cable-stayed or suspension bridges. This paper addresses the monitoring of strands by ultrasonic guided waves with emphasis on the signal processing and automatic defect classification. The detection of notch-like defects in the strands is based on the reflections of guided waves that are excited and detected by magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducers. The Discrete Wavelet Transform was used to extract damage-sensitive features from the detected signals and to construct a multi-dimensional Damage Index vector. The Damage Index vector was then fed to an Artificial Neural Network to provide the automatic classification of (a) the size of the notch and (b) the location of the notch from the receiving sensor. Following an optimization study of the network, it was determined that five damage-sensitive features provided the best defect classification performance with an overall success rate of 90.8%. It was thus demonstrated that the wavelet-based multidimensional analysis can provide excellent classification performance for notch-type defects in strands.

For effective mobility control of UGV(unmanned ground vehicle), the terrain cover classification is an important component as well as terrain geometry recognition and obstacle detection. The vision based terrain cover classification algorithm consists of pre-processing, feature extraction, classification and post-processing. In this paper, we present a method to classify terrain covers based on the color and texture information. The color space conversion is performed for the pre-processing, the wavelet transform is applied for feature extraction, and the SVM(support vector machine) is applied for the classifier. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a promising classification performance.
Recently, multimedia DBMS is appeared to be the core technology of the information society to store, manage and retrieve multimedia data efficiently. In this paper, we propose a new method for content based-retrieval system using wavelet transform, energy value to extract automatically feature vector from image data, and suggest an effective retrieval technique through this method. Wavelet transform is widely used in image compression and digital signal analysis, and its coefficient values reflect image feature very well. The correlation in wavelet domain between query image data and the stored data in database is used to calculate similarity. In order to assess the image retrieval performance, a set of hundreds images are run. The method using standard derivation and mean value used for feature vector extraction are compared with that of our method based on energy value. For the simulation results, our energy value method was more effective than the one using standard derivation and mean value.

In recent years, the development of drone technologies has promoted the widespread commercial application of drones. However, the ability of drone to carry explosives and other destructive materials may bring serious threats to public safety. In order to reduce these threats from illegal drones, acoustic feature extraction and classification technologies are introduced for drone sound identification. In this paper, we introduce the acoustic feature vector extraction method of harmonic line association (HLA), and subband power feature extraction based on wavelet packet transform (WPT). We propose a feature vector extraction method based on combined HLA and WPT to extract more sophisticated characteristics of sound. Moreover, to identify drone sounds, support vector machine (SVM) classification with the optimized parameter by genetic algorithm (GA) is employed based on the extracted feature vector. Four drones' sounds and other kinds of sounds existing in outdoor environment are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show that with the proposed method, identification probability can achieve up to 100 % in trials, and robustness against noise is also significantly improved.
