  • This paper deals with an electronic ballast for hish intensity short-arc discharge lamps, which consists of a boost converter, a step down converter operated as a current source with power regulation and a low frequency inverter with external ignition circuit The ignition circuit generates high voltage pulses of 130[Hz] up to 5 [kV]. A reignition circuit is equipped in the ballast, and it operates the lamp at a regular interval for protection when an ignition fails. Acoustic resonance phenomenon was eliminated by operating a low frequency square wave voltage and current. The measured lamp voltage, current and consumption power were 123.8 [V], 8.1 [A] and 1,002 [W], respectively. From the experiment, we confirmed that the prototype ballast operates the lamp with a constant power.

  • In this paper, we present the fabrication and performance of FBAR filters with ladder and stacked crystal filter (SCF) types. The structure of the unit resonator in our work is the solidly mounted resonator (SMR) with W/SiO$_2$ multi-layer reflectors, the return loss of of which show -24dB at resonant frequency of -2.0GHz. The $K^2$eff, Q$_{s}$, and Q$_{p}$, indicating the performance of resonator were 3.24%, 6,363 and 6,749 and were calculated for the resonator with the resonance area of 21200${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$. Based on this unit resonator, FBAR filters with ladder and SCF types were fabricated and compared. The sizes of filters were 800$\times$2000(${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$) for the ladder type and 600$\times$500(${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$) for the SCF type.e..

  • In this study, surface plasmon resonance structures for the selective and the enhanced transmission of infrared light were designed. In order to relieve the large discontinuity of refractive index between air and metal hole array, $Si_3N_4$ was used as the impedance matching layer. Experimental parameter were calculated and determined in advance by the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) simulation, and then the experiment was carried out. A 2-dimensional metal hole array structures were patterned on the size of $1{\times}1cm^2$ GaAs substrate using photolithography process, and 5 nm thick Ti, 50 nm thick Au were deposited by E-beam evaporator, respectively. Subsequently, $Si_3N_4$ films with various thicknesses (150, 350, 550, and 750 nm) were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). For the comparison, transmittance of specimens with and without $Si_3N_4$ was measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in the range of $2.5-15{\mu}m$. Furthermore, the surface and the cross-sectional images were collected from the specimens by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results, it was demonstrated that the transmittance was enhanced up to 80% by the deposition of 750 nm $Si_3N_4$ at $6.23{\mu}m$. It has advantage of enhanced transmission despite the simple fabrication process.

  • In this paper, TE(transverse electric) scattering problems by a resistive strip grating over grounded dielectric multilayers according to the strip width and grating period, the relative permittivity and thickness of dielectric multilayers, and incident angles of a TE plane wave are analyzed by applying the FGMM(Fourier-Galerkin Moment Method) known as a numerical procedure. The induced surface current density is simply expanded in a Fourier series by using the exponential function as a simple function. Generally, the relected power gets increased according as the relative permittivity and thickness of dielectric multilayers gets increased, the sharp variations of the reflected power are due to resonance effects that take place and were previously called wood's anomallies$^{[7]}$. To verify the validity of the proposed method, the numerical results of normalized reflected power for the uniform resistivity R = 0 as a conductive strip case show in good agreement with those in the existing paper.

  • Objectives : Human physiological changes in the state of qigong has been measured using EEG(Electroencephalography), functional MRI(functional Magnetic Resonance Image), EAV(Electro-Acupuncture according to Voll) and SQUID(Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) measurements. Methods & Results : EEGs were measured to study the differences between Qigong masters and Qi receiver on the changes of EEG. During Qigong, an alpha waves were increased. The power spectra indicate that the peak frequency of alpha waves increased during Qigong. Qi receiver's EEG signals seemed to affected by the state of himself. Brain activation did not observed when qigong master concentrates the Qi at Laogong(P8). But a localization of fMRI signal in the sensory cortex was observed by electric acupuncture stimulation at Laogong(P8). Five phase deviation of EAV were clearly changed in the both cases of Qigong master and Qi receiver. When a Qigong master concentrates the Qi at Yintang, Laogong(P8), Qihai(CV6) meridian points during Qigong state, the change of magnetic field around acupoints Yintang, Laogong points has been measured using 40-Channel DROS-SQUID apparatus. After smoothing process of the continuously measured magnetic signal around acupoints for a few minutes, we could observe that a series of peaks, magnitude of -1.0~2.5pT appeared. But there was no significant difference in changes of magnetic signal around acupoints. Physical signals of magnetocardiogram has been measured by using 2-Channel DROS SQUID(Magnetocardiogram). Physical signals of magnetocardiogram were clealy changed at the ST segments after S-wave when qigong master concentrates the Qi.

  • An ultrasonic technique was developed to characterize the resonance behavior of a microcantilever operating in a megahertz regime. A high-power ultrasonic pulser and a contact transducer were employed to excite the silicon microcantilever, and a Michelson interferometer was used to obtain the time domain waveform. The natural frequency of the microcantilever was evaluated through the fast Fourier transform of the signal, and a numerical analysis using the finite element method confirmed the measurement data. The present study proposes a novel and facile method to evaluate nanoscale materials and structures with high sensitivity compared to conventional approaches.

  • In this study, 3-dimensional hydraulic model experiment and 3-dimensional numerical analysis were carried out to review the control performance on the solitary waves by attaching the resonator suggested in this study to the openings of the existing rectangular harbors and breakwaters placed in a straight line. In the numerical analysis, TWOPM-3D of 3-D one-field Model for immiscible TWO-Phase flows method using 3-dimensional numerical wave tank was applied, and the validity of the numerical analysis method was verified through comparative analysis between hydraulic experimental results and numerical analysis results. In addition, the effectiveness of the resonator was identified as a result of review on the control performance to control solitary waves of the resonance devices through comparison with cases where the resonators are attached or not.

  • This study was done to provide basic data on the safety of professionals in medical imaging system by measuring the electromagnetic waves generated in the medical imaging system being used in medical organization. The studied medical imaging systems were general X-ray system, computed tomography(CT), ultrasonographic(USG) system, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), PET-CT and fluoroscopic(R/F) system, and through these devices, electric field and magnetic field were measured and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the measured values classified by the medical organizations were not much significant, but in the measurement by the medical imaging systems, there were high hazard elements in the sequential order of electric field PET-CT($17.7{\pm}22.9$)v/m, CT($10.3{\pm}8.7$)v/m, general X-ray system($8.8{\pm}8.8$)v/m, magnetic field general X-ray system($5.06{\pm}8.26$)mG, CT($2.71{\pm}4.53$)mG and PET-CT($0.74{\pm}0.34$)mG, the systems that adopted X-ray as main ray source, and the more aged the medical imaging systems, the greater the effects of electro-magnetic waves($10.6{\pm}15.93v/m$ for 5 years or more, $6.14{\pm}5.60v/m$ for 5 years or less). The effects of electromagnetic waves on medical imaging systems or facilities were not much when the notification of ministry of knowledge economy is considered, but in the overall perspective considering all the equipments and facility of the medical organization, such effects were significant. It is determined that sustainable safety managements of electric field and magnetic field must be done during process from medical imaging system installation to maintenance to rule out such factors.

  • Effect of a finite square substrate plane on the radiation characteristics of a microstrip patch antenna is investigated. Effect of a finite square substrate plane on the resonance frequency and bandwidth is very small, while that on the radiation pattern is very large. The gain of front radiation and the direction of the maximum gain vary almost periodically with the length of a square substrate plane. The length of a square substrate plane for the maximum gam and the minimum gain of front radiation decrease as the electrical thickness of a substrate increases. The variation of the gain of front radiation with the length of a square substrate plane increases as the electrical thickness of a substrate increases. The variation of the radiation pattern with the length of a square substrate plane is almost determined by the electrical thickness of a substrate.

  • We have investigated the optical properties of plamonic waveguide with tapered structure based on InP material for photonic integrated circuit(PIC). The proposed plasmonic waveguide is covered with the Ag thin film to generate the plasmonic wave on metallic interface. The optical characteristics of plasmonic waveguide were calculated using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. The plasmonic waveguide was fabricated with the lengths of 2 to $10{\mu}m$ and the widths of 400 to 700 nm, respectively. The plasmonic mode and optical loss were measured. The optimum plasmonic length is $10{\mu}m$ and widths are 600 and 700 nm in the fabricated waveguide. This plasmonic waveguide can be directly integrated with other conventional optical devices and can be essential building blocks of PIC.
