  • The novel wave generating system of a wave flume has been devised by utilizing the analytic solution of wave board motion in idealized two dimensional space. The arbitrary oscillation motion of submerged wave board segment has been defined by sinusoidal motion of upper and lower end of the wave board. The analytic solution of the wave board motion has been represented by the solution of board motion due to flap motion and swing motion. Arbitrary oscillation of the board could be specified by determining amplitude, frequency, and the phase lag. A novel hybrid wave generator could be operated not only in piston motion but also in flap or swing motion by selection of control parameter. The wave generator has unique motion enhancing ability by appending flap motion or swing motion to piston motion in wave generation. In addition the hybrid wave generator has advantages in generating high quality wave spectrum of irregular wave in simulating real sea condition.

  • Piston type wave makers or flap type wave makers are usually adopted as a wave maker which disturbing the fluid domain with sinusoidal motion. Recently hybrid wave maker which could be operated as not only piston type and/or flap type but also swing type wave maker have been devised by utilizing the link mechanism. The wave board of hybrid wave maker has been devised to be independently controlled by the horizontal actuators on upper and lower end of the wave board. The wave board could operate as a flap type wave board when the lower hinge is in a stationary condition and the upper hinge is operated with sinusoidal motion. On the contrary, the swing type wave board could be obtained by the lower hinge is activated and the upper hinge is in a stationary condition. When both end of the wave board is activated in a synchronized condition, the wave board motion become piston motion. In addition the hybrid wave maker could enhance the piston motion with flap motion or swing motion by selecting control parameters. Various wave board motion of hybrid wave maker and relevant wave form have measured on the wave board and departed location. It is appeared that the novel hybrid wave maker could be utilized for the improvement of wave qualities in experiments.

  • The governing partial differential equations of a helical spring with a circular section were derived from Frenet formulas and Timoshenko beam theory. These were solved to give the dispersion relationship between wave number and frequency along with wave form. Wave motions of helical springs are categorized by 4 regimes. In the first regime, the lower frequency area, the torsional and extensional waves of the spring are predominant and two waves are composite wave motions involving lateral motion of the coils and rotation of the coils about a horizontal axis. All waves are propagating in the second regime. The wave of the extensional motion of the spring and one wave of transverse motion of a wire change from travelling waves to near field waves in the third regime. Both waves excited by both axial and transverse motion are predominant in the fourth regime.

  • A segment of the wave board has been expressed as a submerged line segment in the two dimensional wave flume. The lower end of the line segment could be extended to the bottom of the wave flume and the other opposite upper end of the board could be extended to the free surface. It is assumed that the motion of the wave board could be defined by the sinusoidal motion in horizontal direction on either end of the wave board. When the amplitude of sinusoidal motion of the wave board on lower and upper end are equal, the wave board motion could express the horizontally oscillating submerged segment of piston type wave generator. The submerged segment of flap type wave generator also could be expressed by taking the motion amplitude differently for the either end of the board. The pivot point of the segment motion could play a role of hinge point of the flap type wave generator. Simplified analytic solution of oscillating submerged wave board segment in water of finite depth has been derived through the first order perturbation method at two dimensional domain. The case study of the analytic solution has been carried out and it is found out that the solution could be utilized for the design of wave generator with arbitrary shape by linear superposition.

  • Wave energy generation systems can be divided into oscillating water chamber type, over topping device type and wave activating body type. The wave activating body type converts wave energy to kinetic energy, and the power generation amount increases as the motion of an activating body increases. In this paper, the wave energy convertor consists of a main body, which has an H-shape, and the activating body. These are connected by a bar-type bridge. By the incident wave, when the activating body moves with vertical motion this motion is consequently converted into rotational motion. The twisting moment and angular velocity at a shaft of convertor are calculated according to various conditions of the incident wave and the shape of the activating body. This can be used as a basic idea for determining the design of wave activating body type convertor.

  • Interest in renewable energy has been increasing in recent years for many reasons, and there have been many studies on new types of wave energy converters and mechanisms for them. However, in this paper, motion characteristics of a wave energy converter with a wave activating body type is studied with an experiment. In order to conduct the experiment, a simple wave activating body type's wave energy converter is proposed. Experimental variations consist of connection type and location. The connection type controls the rotation motions of structures, and the connection location controls the distance between structures. The movement of floating structures, such as rotation, velocity, and acceleration, is measured with a potentiometer and a motion capture camera. Using the recorded data, the motion characteristics derived from the experimental variations are investigated.

  • In this paper, the wave-induced motion characteristics of a floating pendulor are investigated numerically. A floating pendulor is a movable-body-type wave energy converter. This device consists of three main parts (floater, pendulum, and damping plates). In order to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients and wave exciting forces acting on floating bodies, a higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM) using a wave Green function is applied to the present problems. The hinged motion of a pendulum is simulated by applying the penalty method. In order to obtain a more realistic motion response for a pendulor, numerical body damping is included. First, the wave force and motion characteristics of just a floater are observed with respect to different shape parameters. Then, a coupled analysis of a floater, pendulum, and damping plates is carried out. The relative pitch velocity and wave forces acting on the floating pendulor are compared with those of a fixed pendulor.

  • Offshore wind energy has become a major energy source, and various studies are underway to increase the economic feasibility of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT). In this study, the characteristics of wave-induced motion of a combined wind-wave energy platform were analyzed to reduce the variability of energy extraction. A user subroutine was developed, and numerical analysis was performed in connection with the ANSYS-AQWA hydrodynamic program in the time domain. A platform combining the TLP-type FOWT and the Wavestar-type wave energy converter (WEC) was proposed. Each motion response of the platform on the second-order wave load, the effect of WEC attachment and Power take-off (PTO) force were analyzed. The mooring line tension according to the installation location was also analyzed. The vertical motion of a single FOWT was increased approximately three times due to the second-order sum-frequency wave load. The PTO force of the WEC played as a vertical motion damper for the combined platform. The tension of the mooring lines in front of the incident wave direction was dominantly affected by the pitch of the platform, and the mooring lines located at the side of the platform were mainly affected by the heave of the platform.

  • The purpose of this work is to investigate the dynamics of an atomic wave packet whose center-of-mass motion is quantized in a resonant standing wave cavity field. The mechanical aspect of the matter-field interaction has been extensively studied In the theme of atomic beam deflection, diffraction, or reflection by a standing-wave field. The effect caused in the behavior of spontaneous emission by the atomic center-of-mass motion, classical and quantized, in a standing wave cavity mode has been studied, and recently the one-atom laser with quantized atomic center-of-mass motion has been investigated. • This paper focuses on the impact of the wave passage effect on the long-span bridge. In order to make the wave passage effect more obvious, ground motion samples are selected from the near-fault ground motion of the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and an arch bridge with a 280m main span is selected as a bridge sample. The motion ground samples are divided into two groups according to the characteristics of near-fault. A sequence of fragility curves is developed. It is shown that the seismic damage is increased by the wave passage effect and the increase is more obvious in the near-fault ground motion.
