  • The purpose of this study was that manage effectively the excavation process of the transport tunnel in DONGHAE mine area by investigating the variationof the surface and groundwater flow system around the tunnel and neighbouring villages. Thus, the effect of excavation and water-prrofing process on the water system has been studied through the naked eye survey of the tunnel and the surface outcrop, joint survey, core drilling, the measurement of the surface water quantity, evapotranspiration and precipitation analysis, rock hydraulics approach, the pressure test of boreholes, the variation of the water level, and finally the numerical analysis. From above approachs, we derived the conclusion that the exhaustion of the surface water was not caused by the tunnel excavation on the groundwater system was minimized by effective water proofing process.

  • A superhydrophobic mesh is a unique structure that blocks water, while allowing gases, sound waves, and energy to pass through the holes in the mesh. This mesh is used in various devices, such as gas- and energy-permeable waterproof membranes for underwater sensors and electronic devices. However, it is difficult to fabricate micro- and nano-structures on three-dimensional surfaces, such as the cylindrical surface of a wire mesh. In this research, we successfully produced a superhydrophobic water-repellent mesh with a high contact angle (> $150^{\circ}$) for nanofibrous structures. Conducting polymer (CP) composite nanofibers were evenly coated on a stainless steel mesh surface, to create a superhydrophobic mesh with a pore size of $100{\mu}m$. The nanofiber structure could be controlled by the deposition time. As the deposition time increased, a high-density, hierarchical nanofiber structure was deposited on the mesh. The mesh surface was then coated with Teflon, to reduce the surface energy. The fabricated mesh had a static water contact angle of $163^{\circ}$, and a water-pressure resistance of 1.92 kPa.

  • Cold water observed at sea surface near the southeastern coast of Korea in summers 1982 and 1983 was studied by using data of hydrography, sea level, wind and satellite image. In summer season when water column shows 3-layered structure a "full" upwelling occurs by southwesterly transient wind continuing for several days. During upwelling event, surface water of high temperature moved offshore, middle water of low temperature outcropped to the sea surface, and sea level was lowered, however, equilibrium depth of surface layer was not changed. It may be concluded that cold water at the surface originates from middle layer and strong surface front is a result of surfacing of seasonal thermocline. In order to see the relationship between position of surface front and wind input, a model of Csanady (1982) was applied in a rigid lid approximation. The results show that frontal position can be determined by wind input and water structure near the southeastern coast of Korea. Cold water in summer can appear at the sea surface only when there is wind larger than a minimum wind impulse of order $10m^2/sec$.

  • This paper is a basic study to improve durability by imparting hydrophobicity to the surface and sphere of cement-based materials. A cement mortar to which a silane/siloxane-based mixed water repellent was added was prepared, and its initial hydration performance, flow performance, and compressive strength were measured. In addition, after the surface was abraded, the water contact angle and water absorption were measured. The flow of cement mortar to which the water repellent was added was found to decrease up to 1.5% in the addition amount of the water repellent agent, and increased at 3.0% in the addition amount. It was found that the setting time of the cement paste was delayed in both the initial setting and the termination when the water repellent was added. It was found that the compressive strength decreased from 3.0% of the maximum added amount of the water repellent to a maximum of 30%. The contact angle was found to increase when the water repellent was added to the cement mortar, and the contact angle after surface polishing was found to be larger than before surface polishing. The addition of the water repellent showed hydrophobicity not only on the surface but also on the surface and cross section damaged by polishing. The water absorption rate was found to decrease when the water repellent was added to the cement mortar, and the water absorption rate after surface polishing was found to be greater than before surface polishing.

  • The purpose of this study is to monitor changes in the water surface of reservoirs in verifiable areas in Korea using satellite images and to analyze the water surface area and water storage. The target area of this study is the Daecheong dam of the Geumgang(Riv.), which supplies water to some areas in the Chungcheong area. A study was conducted to detect water surface area by using the Sentinel-1(SAR-C) image and the optical image of Sentinel-2(MSI) among the various observation sensors of satellite images. The correlation between the reservoir's water storage volume, which is ground measurement data, and the extracted water surface area was analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the coefficient of determination(R2) between water surface area and daily storage using SAR images was analyzed to be 0.9242, and in the analysis using Sentinel-2's MSI optical image, it was analyzed to be correlated at 0.8995. In addition, it is analyzed that the water storage volume of the water surface area extracted from the image using the relationship between the water storage volume and the water surface area represents a hydrograph similar to the actual water storage volume. This study is a basic study for the use of satellite images in unmeasured/non-access areas such as North Korea, and plans to conduct a study to analyze annual changes and long-term trends in major dam reservoirs in North Korea by reflecting the results obtained through this study.

  • To evaluate nutrient dynamics with different fertilization in paddy field and develop water quality model, mass balance analysis was performed during growing season of 2001-2002 in field experimental plots irrigated with groundwater. As a result of water balance analysis, most of outflow was surface drainage as about half of total outflow and about 500mm was lost by evapotranspiration. The water budget was well balanced. The runoff from paddy field was influenced by rainfall and forced drain. Especially runoff during early cultural periods more depends on the forced drain. As a result of mass balance analysis, most of nutrient was input by fertilization and lost by plant uptake. Significant amount of nitrogen were supplied by precipitation and input from upper paddy field, comprising 12%∼28% of total inflow. Nutrient loading by surface drainage was occurred showing about 15%∼29% for T-N and 6%∼13% for T-P. The response of rice yield with different fertilization was not significant in this study. Water quality model for paddy field developed using Dirac delta function and continuous source was calibrated and validated to surface water quality monitoring data. It demonstrates good agreement between observed and simulated. The nutrient concentration of surface water at paddy field was significantly influenced by fertilization. During early cultural periods when significant amount of fertilizer was applied, surface drainage from paddy field can cause serious water quality problem. Therefore, reducing surface drainage during fertilization period can reduce nutrient loading from paddy fields. Shallow irrigation, raising the weir height in diked rice fields, and minimizing forced surface drainage are suggested to reduce surface drainage outflow.

  • Surface roughening which is occurred by interaction between base paper and water in coating color deteriorates surface properties of coated paper. In this study, the effect of calendering variables on surface roughening and the relationship between hot calendering and water penetration depth were investigated. BCTMP handsheets were calendered at the various conditions of temperature and linear load, and its PPS roughness was measured before and after moistening to evaluate surface roughening. To determine water penetration depth, thickness was measured from the cross sectional images of sheet which were obtained using CLSM technique. High pressure calendering was beneficial to reduce surface roughness before coating but its smoothening effect was mostly lost by contact with water. On the contrary, sheet calendered at the highest temperature showed the lowest roughening. High temperature calendering allowed the smallest penetration of water into fiber network because of sufficient deformation and densification in top side of z-direction of sheet. Consequently, hot calendering could be the effective way to reduce surface roughening and unevenness of paper surface.

  • Water retaining pavement is a pavement to lower the surface temperature by using evaporation of the water that the pavement contains when the pavement is heated by the sun in the daytime. The objective of this study is to develop water retaining materials. In this study we evaluated the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material. We produced dense grade asphalt pavement, porous asphalt pavement, semi-rigid Pavement, semi-rigid pavement included a charcoal and semi-rigid pavement included a sepiolite, and then tested surface temperature characteristics. The test result says that water retaining pavements using a sepiolite and a charcoal lower surface temperature more than $10^{\circ}C$ compared to dense grade asphalt pavement. We confirm the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material according to the test results.

  • The objective of this study is the evaluation of the tunneling effect on the groundwater-surface water interaction. The designed tunnel line is laid beneath the Gapo-cheon, which runs throughout study area. And, the pre-evaluation of the tunnel-influence on the Gapo-cheon is urgently needed. However, it is very difficult to find out the similar domestic and/or foreign cases. In this study, we would exclude the numerical modeling technique with insufficient data. Instead of the evaluation of the tunneling effect on the groundwater-surface water interaction with the numerical modeling, we monitored the flow rate of surface water at various point. We measured the flow rate of surface water at 5 points. With the results of surface flow, we can conclude that 39% of flow rate in Gapo-cheon is contributed by the groundwater discharge, as baseflow.
