  • To experimentally investigate the variation of soil characteristics in slope during rainfall and the shape of slope failure, the model test was performed using soil box and artificial rainfall simulator. The model test of slope formed by the homogenous sand was performed, and the saturation pattern in the model slope due to rainfall infiltration was observed. The slope model with the inclination of 35° was set up on the slope of 30°, and the rainfall intensity of 50 mm/hr was applied in the test. The soil depth of 35 cm was selected by considering the size of soil box, and the TDR (time domain reflectometry) sensors were installed at various depths to investigate the change of soil characteristics with time. As the result of model test, the slope model during rainfall was saturated from the soil surface to the subsurface, and from the toe part to the crest part due to rainfall infiltration. That is, the toe part of slope was firstly saturated by rainfall infiltration, and then due to continuous rainfall the saturation range was enlarged from the toe part to the crest part in the slope model. The failure of slope model was started at the toe part of slope and then enlarged to the crest part, which is called as the retrogressive failure. At the end of slope failure, the collapsed area increased rapidly. Also, the mode of slope failure was rotational. Meanwhile, the slope failure was occurred when the matric suction in the slope was reached to the air entry value (AEV) estimated in soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC).

  • To overcome the limitation of conventional rock excavation methods, the excavation with abrasive waterjet has been actively developed. The abrasive waterjet excavation method has the effect of reducing blasting vibration and enhancing the excavation efficiency by forming a continuous free surface on the rock. However, the waterjet cutting performance varies with rock fracturing characteristics. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the cutting performance for various rocks in order to effectively utilize the waterjet excavation. In this study, cutting experiments with the high pressure waterjet system were performed for basalt and granite specimens. Water pressure, standoff distance, and traverse speed were determined as effective parameters for the abrasive waterjet cutting. The cutting depth and width of basalt specimens were analyzed to compare with granite results. The averaged cutting depth of basalt was shown in 41% deeper than granite; in addition, the averaged cutting width of basalt was formed by 18.5% narrower than granite. The results of this study are expected to be useful basic data for applying rock excavation site with low strength and high porosity such as basalt.

  • We examined degradation characteristics of lead based pigments(white lead, Red lead, Litharge) according to atmospheric environmet condition, for example atmospheric gas(CO2, NO2) and soluble salt. Painted samples not changed material compositions but were occured the color change(𝚫E 4~31) after exposed UV irradiation. All sample were not affected by CO2 gas not only color but chemical composition. However, samples were remakably changed color exposed NO2 gas and it was formed secondary product like as lead nitrate. Such as red lead and white lead samples' color difference were 𝚫E 2 and 𝚫 10 respectively and became dark, along with litharge became bright and color difference was 𝚫E 5 after react with NO2 gas. It confirm that NO2 was influential factor than CO2 in the case of same concentration. Furthermore salt spray test was taken to figure out soluble salt influence in fine dust. The result showed noticeable color change and secondary product was formed on samples' surface. The glue film peeled off or hole, and color changed around the secondary products. After salt spray, XRD pattern showed decrease peak intensity and lower crystalinity. As a result of salt spray test, white lead was formed new product litharge and litharge was formed litharge and minium. According to the results, influential atmospheric factors for conservation of paint pigments were UV, NO2, soluble salt, and litharge was most weakness throughout lead base pigments.

  • The adequate control of TBM face pressure is of vital importance to maintain face stability by preventing face collapse and surface settlement. An EPB shield TBM excavates the ground by applying face pressure with the excavated soil in the pressure chamber. One of the challenges during the EPB shield TBM operation is the control of face pressure due to difficulty in managing the excavated soil. In this study, the face pressure of an EPB shield TBM was predicted using the geological and operational data acquired from a domestic TBM tunnel site. Four machine learning algorithms: KNN (K-Nearest Neighbors), SVM (Support Vector Machine), RF (Random Forest), and XGB (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) were applied to predict the face pressure. The model comparison results showed that the RF model yielded the lowest RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) value of 7.35 kPa. Therefore, the RF model was selected as the optimal machine learning algorithm. In addition, the feature importance of the RF model was analyzed to evaluate appropriately the influence of each feature on the face pressure. The water pressure indicated the highest influence, and the importance of the geological conditions was higher in general than that of the operation features in the considered site.

  • In this study, in order to improve the durability of the cement composite printed with the ME type 3D printer, PDMS, sodium silicate, and a surface hardener were employed. Post-treatment was performed on 3D-printed cement composite by coating after immersion, and the degree of improvement in durability was evaluated. As a result, in all evaluations, the durability performances of the post-processed specimens were improved compared to those of the plain specimens. Water absorption resistance, chloride penetration resistance, and carbonation resistance of the PDMS treated specimens were improved by 36.3 %, 77.1 %, and 50.4 % when compared to plain specimens. Freeze-thaw resistance of the specimens treated with sodium silicate was found to be the most excellent, with an average enhancement of 47.5% compared to plain specimens. It was found that PDMS was the most efficient post-treatment materials for 3D-printed cement composite. However, as suggested in this study, the post-treatment method by coating after immersion may not be applicable to cement composite structures printed with a 3D printer in field. Therefore, a follow-up study needs to be preformed on the durability enhancing materials suitable for 3D printing.

  • Ice and water droplets rise and fall above the freezing altitude under the effects of strong updrafts and downdrafts, grow into hail, and then fall to the ground in the form of balls or irregular lumps of ice. Although such hail, which occurs in a local area within a short period of time, causes great damage to the agricultural and forestry sector, there is a paucity of domestic research toward predicting hail. The objective of this study was to introduce Land-Atmosphere Modeling Package (LAMP) hail prediction and measure its performance for 50 hail events that occurred from January 2020 to July 2021. In the study period, the frequency of occurrence was high during the spring and during afternoon hours. The average duration of hail was 15 min, and the average diameter of the hail was 1 cm. The results showed that LAMP predicted hail events with a detection rate of 70%. The hail prediction performance of LAMP deteriorated as the hail prediction time increased. The radar reflectivity of actual cases of hail indicated that the average maximum reflectivity was greater than 40 dBZ regardless of altitude. Approximately 50% of the hail events occurred when the reflectivity ranged from 30~50 dBZ. These results can be used to improve the hail prediction performance of LAMP in the future. Improved hail prediction performance through LAMP should lead to reduced economic losses caused by hail in the agricultural and forestry sector through preemptive measures such as net coverings.

  • Purpose: The ultraviolet reflectance and transmittance of coastal building materials are one of the important factors of ultraviolet radiation in and out of coastal building. In this research, the ultraviolet spectral reflectance of many kinds of building materials was measured. Also, the relationships with the lightness, roughness, and chromaticity, which are surface characteristics, were reviewed and suggested. Method: In this study, according to the CIE classification, the ultraviolet region was defined as short-wavelength region UV-C(10nm~280nm), medium-wavelength region UV-B (280-315 nm), and long-wavelength region UV-A (315-400nm), and the visible light region was defined as (400nm~780nm). Spectrophotometer was used to continuously measure the reflectance from the ultraviolet region to the visible light region. Results: From the measurement results, the ultraviolet reflectance on Wood was shown to be about Visible 55-68%, UV-A* 7-12%, and UV-B 4-5%. Wall tiles are about Visible18-40%, UV-A* 8-20%, and UV-B* 7-8%. That on concrete was shown to be about Visible 37%, UV-A* 28%, and UV-B*19%. Conclusion: The ultraviolet reflectance can be estimated by visible reflectance. Also, it is important to select a variety of materials according to the application when blocking UV.

  • There are positive effects, such as pain reduction, when rheumatism patients exercise in water, but the cause of the pain reduction is unclear, and research on this is inadequate. This study examined the flow of the surface of the foot and the principles of pain relief. Unsteady simulations were conducted to analyze the flow, which was performed by repeatedly setting the movement of the foot raising and descending three times. Pressure fluctuations and frequencies were analyzed by designating pressure points at the painful location. The results showed that a positive and negative pressure of approximately ±500Pa was applied overall. A pressure of approximately ±2000Pa was applied when the direction of movement was changed. A frequency of approximately 35 to 80Hz was generated in the area where rheumatoid arthritis pain frequently occurs. The effects of reducing pain could be predicted when continuous pressure fluctuations and frequencies are applied repeatedly to the painful location, blood circulation promotion. The results could be used as basic data to understand the principles of aquatic exercise and support the development of underwater exercise programs and developing related medical equipment.

  • Leakage due to deterioration and damage is one of the major causes of volume change by freezing and thawing, and it leads micro-cracking and surface scaling in concrete structures. The deterioration of damaged concrete accelerates with the chloride attack. Thus, in the detailed guidelines for facility performance evaluation (2020), the quality of cover concrete and the freeze-thaw (FT) repetition cycle were newly suggested for concrete durability assessment. The quality of cover concrete should be evaluated by the rebound hammer test and the FT repetition cycle should be also considered in the deterioration environmental assessment. This study suggested the application of fast dynamic based nonlinear ultrasound method to monitor initial micro-scale damage under freezing and thawing environment. Concrete specimens were fabricated with different water-cement ratios (40%, 60%) and air contents (1.5% and 3.0%). The compressive strength, rebound number, relative dynamic modulus, and nonlinear ultrasound were measured with different FT cycles. The scanning electron microscopy was also performed to investigate the micro-scale FT damage. As a result, both the rebound number and the relative dynamic modulus had difficulty to detect early damage but the proposed method showed a potential to detect initial micro-scale damage and predict the FT resistance performance of concrete.

  • The wet shotcrete refers to a method in which all materials are mixed and then supplied to the spraying device, compressed air is added to the nozzle, and the spraying speed is improved to spray on the target surface. In order to reproduce the amount of shotcrete used in the wet method in the field and the situation at the laboratory scale, it is essential to control the discharge amount of the equipment. In this study, in order to increase the reproducibility of field conditions at the laboratory scale, a flow control system for shotcrete mortar spraying equipment was developed and applied to the equipment. To verify the developed equipment, a discharge control test using water and mortar was performed. In the developed control system, the discharge was smoothly controlled according to the user input value for the mono pump, but the discharge was not properly controlled according to the input value for the screw pump because of a reducer. When a speed reducer is attached, it is necessary to adjust the operation rate of the screw pump close to the target flow rate by increasing the operation rate of the screw pump while lowering the operation rate of the mono pump.
