  • This study investigated the degradation characteristics and biodegradability of phenol, refractory organic matters, by injecting MgO and CaO-known to be catalyst materials for the ozonation process-into a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma. MgO and CaO were injected at 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2 g/L, and the pH was not adjusted separately to examine the optimal injection amounts of MgO and CaO. When MgO and CaO were injected, the phenol decomposition rate was increased, and the reaction time was found to decrease by 2.1 to 2.6 times. In addition, during CaO injection, intermediate products combined with Ca2+ to cause precipitation, which increased the COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal rate by approximately 2.4 times. The biodegradability of plasma treated water increased with increase in the phenol decomposition rate and increased as the amount of the generated intermediate products increased. The biodegradability was the highest in the plasma reaction with MgO injection as compared to when the DBD plasma pH was adjusted. Thus, it was found that a DBD plasma can degrade non-biodegradable phenols and increase biodegradability.

  • In order to study the long-term change of water quality, water analysis for 9 items was conducted at 13 sites surrounding the Kumho river system for 18 times from September 1993 to August 1999. Analytical items for the study of water quality are as follows; water temperature, pH, BOD, COD, DO, SS, electrical conductivity, oil and grease, ABS and phenol. The six year term was divided into Part I(second study) and Part Ⅱ(third study), which covers the term from September 1993 to August 1996 and the term from September 1996 to August 1999, respectively. The mean values obtained for three years for water temperature, pH, BOD, COD, DO, SS, electrical conductivity, oil and grease, ABS and phenol for the Part I period showed 18.4$^{\circ}C$, 7.9, 4.88 ppm, 9.66 ppm, 9.0 ppm, 618.0 umho/cm, 6.9 ppm, 2.63 ppm, 3.57 ppm and 0.98 ppm, respectively. The mean values obtained for water temperature, pH, BOD, COD, DO, SS, electrical conductivity, oil and grease, ABS and phenol for the Part Ⅱ period showed 18.0$^{\circ}C$, 8.0, 2.86 ppm, 7.40 ppm, 8.94 ppm, 541.0 umho/cm, 6.0 ppm, 5.43 ppm, 0.94 ppm and 0.01 ppm respectively. The values of BOD, COD, SS, electrical conductivity, ABS and phenol in the second period were found to be decreased by 1/1.71, 1/1.31, 1/4.15, 1/3.80 and 1/98, respectively. The values of water temperature, pH and DO were nearly constant. However, the concentrations of oil and grease were found to be increased about 2.06 times in the second period.

  • The migration of alkylphenols from PVC packaging materials (wrap, sheet and gasket) into food simulants and foods were analyzed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection and gas chromatography with mass selective detection. Only seven nonyl phenol isomers were detected in three types of PVC food packaging materials and the content of nonyl phenol of wrap was higher than those of sheet and gasket. The contents of nonyl phenol migrated from fatty food simulants (n-heptane) were higher than those from aqeous food simulants (distilled water, 4% acetic acid and 20% ethanol) and increased with increase in temperature. Nonyl phenol in fruit juice, infant formula, and beverage was migrated from PVC gasket, olefin gasket, and olefin bottle cap, respectively. Nonyl phenol was also detected from foods even before contacting with the packaging materals.

  • In this paper, we discussed the hazard of ignition on the bimetal type thermostat molded by phenol resin with case study and accelerated aging test. We experimented three type thermostats molded by phenol resin which are used on hot/cold water dispenser. On the case study, the thermostat was origin of 6re and dry tracking occurred around it's moveable contactor. On the accelerated aging test, the more thermostat was switched, the more damaged it become. One of the A-type thermostats that is similar type on the case study fired around moveable contactor. We therefore confirmed that the tracking around the moveable contactor of bimetal type thermostat molded by phenol resin could be origin of fire and it is available to reduce of fire that using noncombustible material for molding of bimetal type thermostat.

  • Phenol and other phenolic compounds are common constituents of aqueous effluents from processes such as polymeric resin production, oil refining and cokeing plants. Phenol is a both toxic and lethal of fish at relatively low concentrations e.g. 5-25 mg/L and imparts objectionable tastes to drinking water at far lower concentration. Therefore, the treatment of phenol effluent is important. Among the various techniques of phenol wastewater treatment, microbial teratment is a popular process. The breakdown of phenols by microorganisms has recived considerable attention, because of its biochemical interest and its industrial importance in effluent treatment. This research was performed to investigate the dynamics of microbial community, biofilm growth and the comparison of phenol removal efficiency by RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT The experiment was carried out at rotating speed of 10ppm and hydraulic retention time of 7 hours. As time passed, phenol removal efficiency was gained highly. The RBC using Rhodococcus sp. EL-GT completely degraded 15 mM.

  • Mesoporous carbon CMK-3s with different textural properties have been used for the adsorption of phenol to understand the necessary physicochemical properties of carbon for the efficient removal of phenol from contaminated water. The kinetic constants (both pseudo-second order and pseudo-first-order kinetics) increase with increasing pore size of carbons. The maximum adsorption capacities correlate well with micropore volume compared with surface area or total pore volume even though large pore (meso or macropore) may contribute partly to the adsorption. The pore occupancies also explain the importance of micropore for the phenol adsorption. For efficient removal of phenol, carbon adsorbents should have large micropore volume and wide pore size for high uptake and rapid adsorption, respectively.

  • Effect of polyphenolic compounds from green tea leaves and surfactant micelles on lipid oxidation in corn oil-in-water emulsion (O/W) wag determined. Concentrations of polyphenolic compound and surfactant in continuous phase of O/W were measured. Particle size of O/W with 17 mM Brij 700 and 5% corn oil increased with increasing concentration of polyphenolic compound (100-200 ppm). Concentration of surfactant in the continuous phase was lower than that of control. Lipid oxidation rates, as determined by the formation of lipid hydroperoxides and headspace hexanal, in O/W emulsions containing polyphenolic compounds decreased with increasing concentration of polyphenolic compounds (100-200 ppm). Inhibition of hydroperoxide and headspace hexanal produced via lipid oxidation by polyphenolic compounds in O/W was BHT>procyanidin B3-3-O-gallate>(+)-gallocatechin >(+)-catechin.

  • Methods for the extraction of DNA from water sample were approximated. Four different procedures of DNA extraction were carried out with pellets obtained from centrifugation of 4 liter water samples. The recovery efficiency and purity of DNA extracted by each method from different sources were compared. DNA yield varied with extraction methods, Method I, which involves enzymatic and freeze-thaw lysis steps and phenol and phenol-chloroform purification of extracted nucleic acid, showed a significantly higher yield and purity than the other methods. The use of glass beads in the DNA extraction methods improved the purity of DNA suitable for PCR. Bovine serum albumin in the PCR reaction mixture was useful in reducing inhibitory effects of contaminants. The efficiency of an extraction method was determined by the detection of the aer of Aeromonas hydrophila with PCR. The lower limit of detection of A. hydrophila from seeded tap water was 2 CFU/ml in PCR when method I was used for DNA preparation.

  • In recent years, the amount and number of synthetic organic compounds(SOCs) discharged from various industries has been increasing. Granular activated carbon(GAC) adsorption is one of the best available technology to remove SOCs from water supplies and wastewater. In this paper competitive adsorption for binary mixture of 4-nitrophenol and phenol on reverse stratified tapered adsorber(RSTA) using GAC was studied. Two isotherm experiments were conducted, one for phenol and the other for 4-nitrophenol. The phenol data of binary mixture isotherm were not fitted to Freundlich isotherm. The competitive adsorption increased significantly with decreasing carbon dose and increasing adsorbate concentration. The RSTA was found to provide an increase in breakthrough time when decreasing flow rate, increasing angle and injection layers. The performance enhancement provided by RSTA can be exploited in separation and in the purification of fluids.

  • In this study, we investigated a new recycling method of phenol resin, which is widely used to make electric insulation boards and adhesives, into carbon particles by using supercritical fluids. Because phenol resin is insoluble and infusible, most of the phenol resin wastes are buried in the ground or incinerated, which leads to environmental pollution. Therefore, development of a new method to recycle phenol resin waste is an urgent issue. In this study, phenol resin waste was treated with four sub/supercritical solvents: ethanol, acetone, water, and methanol. For all the sub/supercritical solvents, the phenol resin wastes were broken down into carbon nano particles at much lower temperatures than that required in the existing carbon particle manufacturing processes. We investigated the difference of morphologies and physical properties of recycled carbon particles according to the use of various solvents. As a result, carbon nano particles with the same amorphous structure were obtained from phenol resin waste with the usage of various sub/supercritical solvents at much lower temperature.
