  • The paddy rice consumptive use in the six plains of the Korean peninsula was projected with changing climate under the representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios. High resolution climate data for the baseline (1961-1990) was obtained from the International water management institute (IWMI) and future high resolution climate projection was obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration. Reference evapotranspiration (ET) was calculated by using Hargreaves equation. The results of this study showed that the average annual mean temperature would increase persistently in the future. Temperatures were projected to increase more in RCP8.5 than those in RCP4.5 scenario. The rice consumptive use during the growing period was projected to increase slightly in the 2020s and then more significantly in the 2050s and 2080s. It showed higher values for RCP8.5 than for RCP4.5. The rice consumptive use after transplanting in the study areas would increase by 2.2 %, 5.1 % and 7.2 % for RCP4.5 and 3.0 %, 7.6 %, and 13.3 % for RCP8.5, in the 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s, respectively, from the baseline value of 534 mm. The results demonstrated the effects of climate change on rice consumptive use quite well, and can be used in the future agricultural water planning in the Korean peninsula.

  • Urbanization leads to a change of hydrologic responses because impervious area is increased by urbanization. Decrease of groundwater recharge and increase of overland flow are general hydrologic characteristics caused by urbanization. This can be a source of damages such as increased flooding and reduced groundwater levels. Daily streamflow in Gabcheon watershed, South Korea is simulated by ARCSWAT model, an extension of SWAT2005. After calibration and validation of model, the simulated daily streamflow from 1997 to 2001 are statistically analyzed. The phenomenon that $T_{Qmean}$ is inversly proportional to coefficient of variation for the simulated daily streamflow is demonstrated. Also, hydrologic response was more influenced by weather than land use for high flow. This study also examines the effect of land use change on daily streamflow with spatially and quantitatively different land use maps. The simulated stream flow is tested by Mann-Whitney method. The median between stream flows simulated for 1990 and 2000 land use maps is significantly different, but the simulated streamflow for spatially different land use maps is almost unchanged.

  • In recent years, increases in impervious areas with rapid urbanization and land use changes are causing numerous hydrologic and environmental problems. In this study Low Impact Development (LID) was applied to investigate changes in runoff and peak runoff with LID plans. SWMM 5.0 was used to simulate LID Integrated Management Practices (IMPs) at study area. The SWMM estimated total runoff volume with conventional land use planning is (82.3%, 46.44 mm), (99%, 73.16 mm) greater than total runoff before urbanization, while total runoff with LID is (11.1%, 46.44 mm), (49%, 73.16 mm) greater than those before urbanization. With the LID adoption in land use planning, pervious area increases by 49.8% compared with that from the conventional urban land use planning, resulting in (32.7%, 46.44 mm), (23.6%, 73.16 mm) decrease in total runoff, and (32.6%, 46.44 mm), (18.5%, 73.16 mm) decreases in peak rate runoff. The results obtained from this study indicate that peak rate runoff, time to peak, and total runoff can be reduced with the LID in urban land use planning because the LID secures pervious areas with various LID IMPs. The SWMM simulated result using design storm data and the US EPA suggested CN values for various LID IMPs implies that how environment-friendly urban land use planning with the LID adoption is important for sustainable development at urbanizing watershed.

  • Background: Previous studies on the biological integrity on habitat and landuse patterns demonstrated ecological stream health in the view of regional or macrohabitat scale, thus ignored the mesoscale habitat patterns of pool, riffle, and runs in the stream health analysis. The objective of this study was to analyze influences on the mesohabitat structures of pool, riffle, and run reaches on the fish guilds and biological integrity in Geum-River Watershed. Results: The mesohabitat structures of pool, riffle, and run reaches influenced the ecological stream health along with some close relations on the fish trophic and tolerance guilds. The mesoscale components altered chemical water quality such as nutrients (TN, TP) and BOD and these, then, determined the primary productions, based on the sestonic chlorophyll-a. The riffle-reach had good chemical conditions, but the pool-reach had nutrient enrichments. The riffle-reach had a predominance of insectivores, while the pool-reach has a predominance of omnivores. Also, the riffle-reach had high proportions of sensitive fish and insectivore fish, and the pool-reach had high proportions of tolerant species in the community composition. The intermediate fish species in tolerance and omnivorous fish species in the food linkage dominated the community in the watershed, and the sensitive and insectivorous fishes decreased rapidly with a degradation of the water quality. All the habitat patterns were largely determined by the land-use patterns in the watershed. Conclusions: Trophic guilds and tolerance guilds of fish were determined by land-use pattern and these determined the stream health, based on the Index of Biological Integrity. This study remarks the necessity to include additional variables to consider information provided by mesohabitats and land-use distributions within the selected stream stretch. Overall, our data suggest that land-use pattern and mesohabitat distribution are important factors to be considered for the trophic and tolerance fish compositions and chemical gradients as well as ecological stream health in the watershed.

  • To solve a problem of water supply on urban areas, groundwater recharge has to be assessed not only for evaluating the possibility of groundwater development but also for identifying a sustainable aquifer system for water resource development. The assessment of groundwater recharge has been challenged since the land use has been changed constantly. In this study, the groundwater recharge and its ratio were assessed from 1961 to 2007 in Su-yeong-gu, Busan, South Korea by analyzing precipitation, land use, and soil characteristics. For land use analysis, the urbanization change was considered. The land use areas for the residential, agricultural, forest, pasture, bare soil, and water in 1975 occupy 18.6 %, 30.0%, 48.8%, 0.1%, 2.0%, and 0.5% of total area, respectively. The land use ratios were sharply changed from 1980 to 1985; the agricultural area was decreased to 18.3%, and the residential area was increased to 15.0%. From 1995 to 2000, the agricultural area was decreased to 5.5%, and the residential area was increased to 5.4%. The annual averages of precipitation, groundwater recharge, and its ratio were 1509.3 mm, 216.0 mm, and 14.3% respectively. The largest amount of the groundwater recharge showed in 1970 as 408.9 mm, comparing to 2138.1 mm of annual rainfall. Also, the greatest ratio of the groundwater recharge was 19.8% in 1984 with 1492.6 mm of annual rainfall. The lowest amount and ratio of the groundwater recharge were 71.9 mm and 8.0% in 1988, relative to 901.5 mm of annual precipitation. As a result, it is concluded that rainfall has increased, whereas groundwater recharge has decreased between 1961 and 2007.

  • The water shortage in mega cities in Asia, which face a rapid growth in urban population, is an outstanding problem. It is important, therefore, to accurately estimate the water balance in each city in order to use the limited water resources effectively. In this study, we estimated the potential water resources in し sixteen mega cities in Asia. The target cities were Delhi and Calcutta, India; Colombo, Sri Lanka; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Yangon, Myanmar; Bangkok, Thailand; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Jakarta, Indonesia; Hanoi, Vietnam; Beijing and Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China; Seoul, the People's Republic of Korea; Manila, the Philippines, and Sapporo and Tokyo, Japan. The potential water resources were estimated by subtracting the actual evaporation from the amount of rainfall. The actual evaporation was estimated using the potential evaporation obtained by Hamon's equation which requires the air temperature and the possible hours of sunshine. When the results of Hamon's and Penman's evaporation equations were compared, a considerable error appeared in the low latitude region. The estimation using Hamon's equation was corrected with the linear regression line of Hamon's and Penman's equations. A classification of the land cover was carried out based on satellite photographs of the target cities, and the volume of surface runoff for each city was obtained using the runoff ratios which depended on the land cover. As a result, the potential water resources in the above mega cities in Asia were found to be greater than the world average. However, the actual water resources which are available for one person to use are probably very limited.

  • We are used with the alkaline ion water which an application field does to object for drinking water compare with the alkaline ion water which asked ion acid electrolysis so as to be very different. This is used with sterilization disinfection use by residual chlorine in case of strong acidity according to ph intensity, and in case of middle acidity use by washing and face washing, and mix with meal materials in case of weak acidity widely usable in cooking. Acid ion water generates as we electrolyze water. Chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide etc. was generated at electrolysis process, and we have toward sterilizing power. Derelicts such as chlorine, phosphorus, sulfur etc. are gathered from a negative ion, and we make acid ion water to + electrode direction in electrolysis. We used a diaphragm in order to disconnect too acid water and alkaline water. We implemented so that the acid water which it came down to three kinds of PWM voltage to PWM (pulse width modulation) control, and implementation method of ph intensity change authorized ph intensity between weak acidity to electrode in strong acidity as we used Microprocessor, and intensity was adjusted successively by PWM control was generated.

  • Many kinds of generation systems have been developed to use ocean energy. Among these, with the use of an oscillating water column (OWC) for power generation is attracting attention. The OWC-type wave power generation system converts wave energy into electricity by operating a generator turbine with the oscillating water level in a column of water. There are two ways to convert wave power into electricity using an OWC. One uses a cross-flow turbine using the water level inside the OWC. The other method uses the flow of air in a Wells turbine, which depends on the water level. An experiment was carried out using a 2-D wave tank in order to minimize the number of empirical tests. The design factors were taken from Koo et al. (2012) and the experimental environment assumed by free surface motion. This paper deals with characteristics of two types of wave energy conversion systems combine with a breakwater. One model uses an air-driven Wells turbine and a cross-flow water turbine. The other type uses a cross-flow water turbine. Wave energy converters with OWCs have mostly been studied using air-driven Wells turbines. The efficiency of the cross-flow turbine was about 15% higher than that of the other model, and the water level of the OWC internal chamber for the cross-flow water turbine and air-driven Wells turbine was less than about 40% lower than the one using only the cross-flow water turbine.
