  • The distilled water is used for the ultrasonic wave propagating material in the measurements of broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) that is applied in industrial and medical applications, The acoustic impedance of water is significantly changed with its temperature. Therefore, the quantitative evaluation of BUA with temperature and the ultrasonic wave propagating distance is highly needed. In this study, we evaluated the variation of attenuation with change in temperature. To measure the variation of BUA in the low frequency region at the temperatures, 27$^{\circ}C$, 29$^{\circ}C$, and 31$^{\circ}C$, we tested the Plyethylene, Teflon, MC-Nylon, Urethane specimens and analyzed the center frequency, frequency bandwidth, spectral peak amplitude. The results showed that BUA value appeared to be lower with increasing temperature. This may be due to the fact that the frequency feature of ultrasonic wave is affected by not only the specific gravity, acoustic impedence, but material crystalline, porosity, the distance of ultrasonic wave propagation in water.

  • This paper describes a study on the performance of steam ejector by variation of steam pressure. Water temperature is especially important for good qualify of fish in an inland aquafam. In summer season, the water temperature increases above $25^{\circ}C$, but for good quality breeding or fish is the maintenance of optimum aquafam temperature by about $20^{\circ}C$. Therefore it is needed to drop the water temperature to provide suitable conditions of fish growth. There are many kinds of cooling system, in this study using steam ejector. After cooling the water in vacuum tank with the steam ejector then circulate this water to inland aquafam. In this way to minimizes fish stress that it is caused by water temperature. The objective of research confirms the difference of the case which there is no water in the vacuum tank and has water in the vacuum tank. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects on the performance of steam ejector by variation of steam pressure.

  • With the results of observations in 2013 and 2014 including ocean buoys, in-situ investigations and wind data, we examined the spatio-temporal variation of cold water masses along the eastern coast of Korea. Usually, a cold water mass first appears along the northern part of the eastern coast from May to July, and then along the southern part of the eastern coast from late June to mid-August. Cold water masses appear 3~5 times a year and remain for 5~20 days in the southwestern part of the East Sea. A distinctive cold water mass appeared usually in mid-July in this area, the surface temperature of which was below $10^{\circ}C$ in some cases. During the appearance of a cold water mass in the southwestern part of the East Sea, the horizontal temperature gradient was large at the surface and a significant low water temperature below $8^{\circ}C$ appeared at the bottom level. This appearance of cold water masses clearly corresponded to southwesterly winds, which generated coastal upwelling.

  • Air washer remove dust on the air and use for humidification. But the last should be applied to the semiconductor and FPD industry, air washer has focused on removing pollutants. In addition, air washer within the clean room remove the pollutants as well as use for humidification in Winter. However, there is no research in the country, and for research purposes, the evaluation was conducted by atomizing water temperature variation and L/G variation. Performance evaluation results are the same conditions as the entrance of air washers ($23^{\circ}C$, 45%RH). Cooling effect is enhanced when atomizing water temperature is lower. The larger the performance of humidification to L/G lower the temperature increases.

  • The photovoltaic/thermal collectors (PV/T collectors) combine the solar thermal collector and photovoltaic modules. They can produce thermal energy in the form of hot air or hot water, and converts solar radiation into electricity. The collecctors can improve the electrical performance of PV modules as the heat from the PV module carried away by the thermal part of the system keeping temperatures lower. The basic water cooled PVT collector has metallic water pipes attached to the back of a PV collector. There are main parameters affecting the performance (electrical and thermal) of PVT collectors. This paper analyzed the experimental performance of glazed water PVT module, considering the parameters of solar radiation, inlet water temperature and ambient temperature. It found that solar radiation is the dominant factor for the electrical performance of the collector, and for the thermal performance the inlet water temperature and ambient temperature appeared to be more related.

  • We investigated seasonal variation of microalgal assemblages, sea water temperature, salinity and suspended solid and the parameters measured daily from January 1998 to October 1999 at a nearshore shallow-water in Marian Cove, Maxwell Bay, King George Island, the Antarctic. Annual mean surface water temperature was -0.3$0^{\circ}C$ and the highest water temperature was 4.53$^{\circ}C$ (22 January 1999) and the lowest water temperature was -2.07$^{\circ}C$ (23 August 1998). Annual mean salinity was 33.38 psu, ranging from 42.80 psu (6 January 1999) to 19.50 psu (6 June 1999). Annual mean suspended solid (SS) during two years was 34.14 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$, ranging from 60.62 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$(7 March 1998) to 12.90 mgㆍ1$^{-1}$ (26 December 1998). Chlorophyll $\alpha$ (Chl $\alpha$) concentrations were measured in order to know seasonal variations of microalgae in the surface seawater. Annual mean of total Chl a concentration was 0.55$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, the highest Chl $\alpha$ concentration (12.16$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$) appeared in 4 October 1998, the lowest Chl $\alpha$ concentration appeared 0.19$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, Monthly mean total Chl $\alpha$ concentration was high in October 1998 (1.32$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$) and low in July on 1998 (0.28$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$). Annual mean nano-sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was 0.40$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$, monthly mean nano -sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was high in November 1998 (0.90$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$), and low in July 1999 (0.22$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$). Annual mean micro-sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was 0.15$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$ monthly mean micro-sized Chl $\alpha$ concentration was high in October 1998 (0.81$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$), and low July 1998, January, February and September 1999 (0.05$\mu\textrm{g}$ㆍ1$^{-1}$). More than 65% of total Chl $\alpha$ was concentrated during spring and summer time between October and March. Microalgal variation appeared to be due to physical factors of seawater in the Antarctic nearshore from 1998 to 1999. The reason why micro-sized Chl $\alpha$ did not increase during austral summer was the bay had been frozen by decrease of water temperature. We think that total microalgal abundance was decreased because the summer microalgal abundance was determined by variation of water temperature during winter season. • As a large scale port development in coastal waters proceeds step by step and populations in the vicinity of port are getting increased, the issue on "how to dispose the treated municipal water and wastewater in harbor" brings peoples′ concern. The submarine outfall system discharges the primary or secondary treated effluent at the coastline or in deep water, or between these two. The effluent, which has a density similar to that of fresh water, rises to the sea surface forming plume or jet, together with entraining the surrounding sea water and becomes very dilute. We intended in this paper to investigate the impact on dilution of effluent and the behavior of flume under the conditions of the seasonal and spatial temperature variations, which have not been noticeable in designing effective marine outfall system. To predict and analyze the behaviour and dilution characteristics of plume not just with the effluent temperature, but also with the seasonal variation of temperature of surround water and tidal changes, CORMIX(Cornell Mixing Zone Expert System)-GI have been applied. The results should be used with caution in evaluation the mixing zone characteristics of discharged water. We hope to help for the effective operation of outfall system, probable outfall design, protection of water quality, and warm water discharges from a power plant, etc.

  • Oceanographic features around Korean waters related to the global change were studied by analysis of the longterm variation of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, sea level of the surface layer with 1$^{\circ}C$ temperature, spatial position of the subpolar front in the East Sea/Japan Sea (the East sea hereafter) and the Wolf Sunspot Number. With the global warming, the temperature of Korean waters has been increased 0.5∼1.0$^{\circ}C$ for 33years (1968∼2000). In case of the dissolved oxygen in the East Sea has been decreased 0.46$m\ell$/$\ell$. Year to year vertical fluctuations of the monthly anomalies of the surface layer with 1$^{\circ}C$water in the East Sea have predominant periods with 15years as the longterm variation of Arctic climate, 12 and 18years as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation. Spatial position of the subpolar front in the East Sea moved to northern part of the sea from the southern part of the sea with the increasing sea surface temperature. The relationship between the number of Wolf Sunspot and the anomalies of sea surface temperature was very closer after the late of 1980s than those before the early of 1980s in Korean waters.

  • To confirm the relationship between climate change and Stephanodiscus in Mulgeum station of Nakdong River, Korea, this study was conducted. The temperature in crease by climate change was observed in the study site, where the temperature was gradually increased in most seasons, except for summer season. The mass proliferation of Stephanodiscus constantly appeared in every year, especially between November and March, and when Stephanodiscus abundance was above 90% in phytoplankton biomass. Among this period, phytoplankton biomass was high related with water temperature ($r^2$=0.249, P<0.01) than nutrient factors such as nitrogen and phosphorus in the study site. Finally, temperature by climate change can be regarded as the affecting factor for chl. a variation, because temperature was strongly related with water temperature ($r^2$=0.748, P<0.01). From 1997 to 2010, the annual maximum phytoplankton biomass was recorded in the range of temperature from $4.8^{\circ}C$ to $8.4^{\circ}C$, and the range was regarded as the temperature condition for the optimal growth of Stephanodiscus in the study site. On the optimal growth temperature, the trend of monthly average temperature corresponded to the trend of chl. a variation from November to March. In future, the increase of temperature by climate change can prolong Stephanodiscus blooming period in winter and spring seasons.

  • We studied the sea level variations at Kerguelen island in the South Indian Ocean with ARGOS data and meteorological data during about 1 year(May 1993~April 1994) through using filter, spectral analysis, coherency and phase, and found characteristics for the two oceanic signal levels(detided oceanic signal level, h$_{detided}$ and seasonal oceanic level, h$_{corr.ib}$). The forms of atmospheric pressure variations are good agreed to between ARGOS data and meteorological data in the observed periods. This Kerguelen area shows the inflow of an air temperature(gain of a radiant heat) into the sea water and the stagnation of high atmospheric pressure bands in summer, and the outflow of a sea water temperature(loss of sensible and latent heat) toward the atmosphere and the stagnation of low atmospheric pressure bands in winter. The seasonal difference of sea level between summer and winter is about 1.6cm. Both the detided oceanic signal level(h$_{detided}$) variation and the inverted barometer level(h$_{ib}$) variation have a strong correlation for T>1day period bands. The characteristics of h$_{detided}$ variation are not decided by the influence of any meteorological distributions (atmospheric pressure), but the influence of other factors(bottom water temperature) for T>2days periods bands. h$_{corr.ib}$ plays a very important role of sea level variation in the observed periods (especially T>about 180days period bands).
