  • Water is an indispensable input to human's existence and industrial production. A water supply project would demand considerable costs, but produce economic benefits, which are importantly utilized in the project evaluation. In this situation, this study attempts to value the economic benefits from the residential water supply in Seoul. In particular, yearly consumer surplus and economic value of water supply for eleven water authority agencies in Seoul are measured during the period 2001-2004. Information on price elasticity required in calculating consumer surplus is obtained from direct estimation of the residential water demand function, and the consumer surplus is assessed by using a recently developed formula. Price elasticities used here are -0.810 and -1.011, and the estimated consumer surplus and economic value amount to 131.9 to 164.6 billion won and 398.6 to 431.3 billion won, respectively.

  • Climatic water balance has been applied to obtain quantity of various hydrologic components. Hydrologic information is estimated by comparison between rainfall and evapotranspiration under complex terrain condition. Water deficit is defined as that subtraction of actual supply from climatic demand. The water deficit will occur, when monthly evapotranspiration exceed monthly rainfall. Contrary water surplus is defined as that surplus water after meeting the demand by plants. The water surplus will be occurred when monthly rainfall exceeds monthly evapotranspiration. Finally, the discrete moisture indices were calculated and mapped for the whole watershed to estimate dryness and wetness status using the climatic water balance approach. The result of this study can properly interpret the real drought and non drought. Based upon the results, it can be concluded that the climatic water balance model is useful to monitor water conditions for the watershed.

  • This study examines the effects of water shortage on agricultural wages in Northwest Bangladesh. For this study, meteorological data including information on the monthly temperature, precipitation, wind speed, hour of sunshine and humidity of six weather stations have been utilized during the monitoring period from 1985 to 2005. With the objective to analyze water surplus and water deficiency, a simple soil-water balance model and the modified Penman formula were applied to the Northwest Bangladesh. The seasonality of Mann-Kendell trend statistics has been used to identify the spatial variation of water surplus and deficiency throughout the region. For micro level verification of the result, a detailed field survey has been conducted within the study area. The results showed that the values of the potential evapotranspiration estimated by the modified Penmen equation were negative for certain periods. In this instance, the water deficiency of the district of Rajshahi was observed significantly in the period of pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. The field study also verified that because of such deficiency in water, the agricultural scenario of the area was widely influenced which lead to less agricultural production and less economic benefits.

  • Surplus soil is commonly used at construction sites, because suitable fill material is not always immediately available and leads to additional costs. However, most surplus soils do not meet the requirement of suitable fill material to achieve the stability and strength of embankments. In this study, Proctor compaction tests and field compaction tests were performed by installing geosynthetics to resolve the problems caused by compacting unsuitable soils. Compaction energy and the number of geosynthetics were changed under the type A- and D- and type A Proctor compaction tests (KS F 2312), respectively. The field compaction testing using geosynthetics was performed on surplus soils of high water content. Optimum water content and maximum dry density of compacted soil decreased and increased by reinforcing geosynthetics, respectively. Compaction curves behaved with geosynthetics as the compaction curves behaved with higher compaction energy. Efficient compaction was possible because the compaction energy increased to 2.10 and 2.71 times the compaction energy required to achieve the same maximum dry density with one and two geosynthetic layer(s), respectively. Furthermore, field compaction tests verified that efficient compaction was possible because the dry density of unsuitable surplus soils of high water content was increased by reinforcing geosynthetics.

  • This study was carried out in order to reduce the amount of underground water which is used in the water curtain system for retaining heat. To proceed to the research, two plastic green houses of water curtain system were installed. One was equipped of internal small tunnel for keeping warm air in the interior of the house. Then the internal small tunnel for keeping warm air was fitted with PVC duct of 50cm in diameter filled with subsurface water. Storing surplus solar energy in the water filled in PVC duct was the method used to this house. Another was installed with FCU in the middle of the house, and was fitted a circulation motor in water tank for heat storage which was operated from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in order to interchange heat with FCU. The latter was installed with four FCUs which has a capacity of 8000kcal per hour. Consequently about 5 degrees celsius could be maintained in the interior of the internal small tunnel for keeping warm air with the external temperature of more than minus 5 degrees celsius. It appeared that the alteration of an internal temperature of the house was flexible depending on the sunlight during daytime. It happened that to prevent the water from freezing, mixing antifreezing liquid in the flowing water of FCU or changing the operating method of FCU was a suitable measure. Also, in order to use the surplus solar thermal energy on plastic green house of water curtain system efficiently, storing the surplus heat during daytime simultaneously finding a method of using water curtain systematic underground water happened to be important. As a result of this research, when the house's interior temperature is below zero the operation of FCU appeared to be impossible. Therefore when supposed that the amount of water used in the house is 150~200ton for stable operation of FCU, using the system mentioned in the above research happened to be appropriate of reducing the amount of subsurface water from 80% to 100% when maintaining the interior of internal small tunnel's temperature for keeping warm air of 5 degrees celsius at the extreme temperature of minus 5 degrees celsius.

  • Optimal design of the water supply pipe network aims to minimize construction cost while satisfying the required hydraulic constraints such as the minimum and maximum pressures, and velocity. Since considering one single design factor (i.e., cost) is very vulnerable for including future conditions and cannot satisfy operator's needs, various design factors should be considered. Hence, this study presents three kinds of design factors (i.e., minimizing construction cost, maximizing reliability, and surplus head) to perform multi-objective optimization design. Harmony Search (HS) Algorithm is used as an optimization technique. As well-known benchmark networks, Hanoi network and Gyeonggi-do P city real world network are used to verify the applicability of the proposed model. In addition, the proposed multi-objective model is also applied to a real water distribution networks and the optimization results were statistically analyzed. The results of the optimal design for the benchmark and real networks indicated much better performance compared to those of existing designs and the other approach (i.e., Genetic Algorithm) in terms of cost and reliability, cost, and surplus head. As a result, this study is expected to contribute for the efficient design of water distribution networks.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential water condition of Honam region according to water budget analysis. For this purpose, the eight regions (Suncheon, Gwangju, Jhangheung, Damyang, Mokpo, Yosu, Huksando, Namwon) are selected as study area. The result is as follows. (1) The water surplus indicating the potential water condition is ordered as Yosu, Sunchon, Changhung, Namwon, Damyang, Huksando, Kwangju, Mokpo. So the potential water condition of Kwangju and Mokpo is worst among study regions. (2) The high water surplus region is corresponded to high precipitation and low actual evapotranspiration legions. (3) The potential water condition is to agree with several facts about the water resource condition of Honam region. For example, large scale dam of Honam region has been constructed for Kwangju and Mokpo city. This fact indicates that the potential water condition calculated by water budget analysis is corresponded to actual water resource condition. (4) Consequently, the water budget analysis is effective method for investigating the actual water condition and establishing the water resource management of specific regions.
