  • Agricultural reservoirs are critical water resources structures to ensure continuous water supplies for rice cultivation in Korea. Climate change has increased the risk of reservoir failure by exacerbating discrepancies in upstream runoff generation, downstream irrigation water demands, and evaporation losses. In this study, the variations in water balance components of 400 major reservoirs during 1973-2017 were examined to identify the reservoirs with reliable storage capacities and resilience. A conceptual lumped hydrological model was used to transform the incident rainfall into the inflows entering the reservoirs and the paddy water balance model was used to estimate the irrigation water demand. Historical climate data analysis showed a sharp warming gradient during the last 45 years that was particularly evident in the central and southern regions of the country, which were also the main agricultural areas with high reservoir density. We noted a country-wide progressive increase in average annual cumulative rainfall, but the forcing mechanism of the rainfall increment and its spatial-temporal trends were not fully understood. Climate warming resulted in a significant increase in irrigation water demand, while heavy rains increased runoff generation in the reservoir watersheds. Most reservoirs had reliable storage capacities to meet the demands of a 10-year return frequency drought but the resilience of reservoirs gradually declined over time. This suggests that the recovery time of reservoirs from the failure state had increased which also signifies that the duration of the dry season has been prolonged while the wet season has become shorter and/or more intense. The watershed-irrigated area ratio (W-Iratio) was critical and the results showed that a slight disruption in reservoir water balance under the influence of future climate change would seriously compromise the performance of reservoirs with W-Iratio< 5.

  • Wangsong Reservoir needs a systematic approach that can control water purity and water quality improvement. This study was carried out to assess the seasonal variation of water quality and the effect of pollutant being loaded from watershed in a sallow eutrophic reservoir(Wangsong Reservoir) from March to November, 2011. Wangsong Reservoir, located in Uiwang City, has the capacity of 2 million $m^{3}$ in irrigation water supply with the drainage of 4.2 $km^{2}$. Average concentrations of BOD, COD, T-N, T-P, and Chloropyll-a in Wangsong Reservoir were 5.8 mg/L, 9.7 mg/L, 4.299 mg/L, 0.106 mg/L and 73.1 mg/$m^{3}$, respectively. In the inflow streams and treated sewage of Wangsong Reservoir, the T-N concentrations of 4.114 - 14.619 mg/L were higher than those in the Reservoir and the other pollutants were lower. As a result of investigation, Wangsong Reservoir exceeded the agricultural water standard level due to algal growth and accumulation from the upper streams and sewage. In order to achieve the targeted water quality in Wangsong Reservoir, it is required to be decreased in pollutants of internal and inflow streams.

  • Pond management is a critical part of overall golf course management, both during growth and maintenance modes of turf care. This study investigated 48 ponds in nine 18- or 27-hole golf courses to analyze the environmental characteristics of ponds. The research process had three phases: (1) inventory and analysis of grading plans and drainage plans, (2) field verification and interviews with greenskeepers, and (3) analyses of water quality and statistics. All data were collected from May to August in 2004. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. It is desirable to site a golf course in a small watershed with high watershed eccentricity to control storm water runoff efficiently and to minimize soil erosion during construction. 2. The siting and size of a pond should be determined through a land-use analysis of the watershed for the purpose of ecological management. The bigger the forest-to-golf course ratio, the better the water quality will be. 3. The size and capacity of each individual ponds varied and there were many somewhat longish rather than round ponds. 4. There were many differences among golf courses in naturalness of the ponds, and the correlation between naturalness and area of aquatic plants was very high. 5. Analyses of pond water quality indicated that the degrees of Dissolved Oxygen, Chemical Oxygen Demanded and Suspended Solids were relatively low values but Total Phosphorus and Total Nitrogen were too high. Therefore a systematic approach is needed to solve e problem. Pesticide residues were not detected in all ponds. 6. Water depth and area of hydrophyte should be considered when designing an ecological pond. 7. All ponds used storm water as a main source of water supply and added underground water. Aquatic plants and physical methods such as water aeration and spray fountains were the main choices for maintaining a healthy aquatic environment.

  • This is the study for the removal of a toxic heavy metal ions and the recycling of expanded polystyrene wastes. Thus expanded polystyrene wastes collected from the packing materials of TV or chemicals and dissolved by $80wt.\%$ solvent(N, N-Dimethylacrylamide), electrospun in DC 20kV by power supply. Generally, the electrospinning is a process of manufacture to the fibers of nanosize from polymer solution. Manufactured nanofiber mats by electrospinning were sulfonated by cone.-sulphuric acid with $Ag_2S_O_4$ catalysts for the exchange capacity of heavy metal ions and the properties of structure with sulfonated time investigated by FESEM(Feild Emission Scaning Electron Microscope). The ion exchange capacity of light metal$(Na^+)$, Cd(II) and Ni(II), and by a nanofiber mats were 1.94[mmo1/g-dry-mat), 1.72(mmol/g-dry-mat), 1.24(mmol/g-dry-mat), respectively., and water uptake content showed a similar trend with IEC. and The selectivity coefficients $K^M_H$ of Cd(II), Ni((II) ions showed 0.324, 0.228. respectively.

  • Recently, in order to prevent increasing energy usages in the international community, many countries have attempted to develop the innovative renewable energy systems. Among the renewable energy systems, Ground source heat pump(GSHP) system which supply the heating, cooling and hot water in the building has been attracted by its stability of heat production and high efficiency. However, the initial drilling costs become very expensive and the construction period takes longer the other systems, because GSHP system needs more than 100 m depth drilling. In this study, in order to reduce initial costs of the GSHP, the building integrated geothermal system using the horizontal heat exchanger was developed. The heating and cooling load in the standard housing model was calculated by a simulation and the system design capacity in the high-rise apartment was decided by the total load. Based on the system design capacity, the high-rise apartments were applied to a BIGS and vertical GSHP system and there are analyzed about initial costs. In the result, the initial cost of BIGS could reduce 24% of the initial cost of the vertical GSHP system.

  • The Philippines is known for its abundant water resources such as the rainfall, where it has a mean annual rainfall range from 965 to 4,100mm. Due to the rapid urbanization of the country, the population in Metro Manila has been continuously increasing hence, the demand for a potable water supply also increases. To mitigate the scarcity of potable water supply, utilization of the water resources should be practiced. Rainwater harvesting is one way to utilize the rainfall runoff. This study analyzedthe potentiality of the rainwater harvesting on residential areas in Metro Manila. A water balance method based spreadsheet was used with input parameters including daily rainfall, catchment area, runoff coefficient, population and the water demand. The efficiency of the domestic water tank was analyzedusing the three different climatic conditions (i.e., minimum, median andmaximum annual rainfalls) and three different types of toilets (i.e., inefficient, conventional and dual-flush toilets). Furthermore, the overflow volume was used to determine which size of rainwater storage was more appropriate for the study area. The results of the study showed that for the three types of rainfall years, only the conventional and dual-flush toilets were suitable for the utilization of rainwater harvesting. The utilization of the $60m^3$ storage tank was sufficient for supplying the demandsof the 90 houses only for a small period of time, 3 months. Based from this study, to fully sustain the long-term water demand of the houses, the enlargement of the tank size having a capacity of 1,100 to $2,500m^3$ is ideal.

  • Attempts are being made to use the sand dam as an alternative water resource securement facility by installing and operating sand dams in valleys, where water intake capacity is extremely limited, in areas with limited water supply in the upstream watershed of Korea. In the case of some countries in Africa, where sand dams are known to be most actively installed and used, it is difficult to find examples of establishing and applying a separate legal system for sand dams. A sand dam is a kind of groundwater dam, and in view of its concept, structural and technical form and characteristics, purpose, use, and function, it will be said that it has the legal character and status as a facility for securing groundwater resources specified in the current 「Ground Water Act」. Interpretation and application of regulations on facilities for securing groundwater resources also supports this. Therefore, it is legal and realistic to promote and implement the sand dam project as one of the installation and management projects for securing underground water resources based on the 「Ground Water Act」.

  • Adsorbability of ionic and nonionic pharmaceuticals was studied using granular activated carbon(GAC). In a batch adsorption test of muticomponent solution, 500 mg/L of GAC dose removed all target compounds between 94 and 98% at initial concentration of 10 ${\mu}g/L$. Adsorption of ionic pharmaceuticals increased as pH was lowered toward to pKa, however adsorption capacity of nonionic pharmaceuticals showed insignificant variation with the changing pH. The enhanced adsorption capacity of ionic pharmaceuticals at lower pH was attributed to the corresponding increase in the molecular form of ionic pharmaceuticals with carboxylic group at low pH. In addition, decrease of pH increased hydrogen ion concentration in the bulk solution and the protons bound to the available sites on the carbon enhanced the removal of the ionic pharmaceuticals from solution. After 40 days of continuous operation, GAC column showed the removal of target compounds were removed by $93{\sim}99%$ at 15 min of EBCT mainly due to adsorption mechanism of GAC. At shorter EBCT than 15 min, breakthrough of CA, IBP and GFZ occurred earlier than the other ionic and nonionic pharmaceuticals. effect of EBCT on adsorption of nonionic pharmaceuticals was greater than ionic ones. This study showed that persitent pharmaceuticals found in drinking water treatment could be effectively controlled by adsorption in GAC process.
