  • In the water sector, various data such as flow rate, pressure, water quality and water level are collected during the whole process of water purification plant and piping system. The collected data is stored in each water treatment plant's DB, and the collected data are combined in the regional DB and finally stored in the database server of the head office of the Korea Water Resources Corporation. Various abnormal data can be generated when a measuring instrument measures data or data is communicated over various processes, and it can be classified into missing data and wrong data. The cause of each abnormal data is different. Therefore, there is a difference in the method of detecting the wrong side and the missing side data, but the method of cleansing the data is the same. In this study, a program that can automatically refine missing or wrong data by applying deep learning LSTM (Long Short Term Memory) algorithm will be studied.

  • Measurements using five real-time particle samplers were compared to measurements using three NRM (National Reference Method system) filter-based samplers(Gravimetric method) at Incheon, Korea, between May and August, 2014. The purpose of this study was to suggest the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) method of each instrument for use in a real-time continuous particle sampler to measure the mass of airborne particles with an aerodynamic diameter less than $2.5{\mu}m$ ($PM_{2.5}$). Five real-time particle samplers of BAM1020, FH62C_14, TEOM, PM-711 and SPM-613 were evaluated by comparing its measured 23 hr average $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations with those measured with NRM filter-based samplers simultaneously. The parameters(e.g. Inlet heating condition, Slope factor, Film response, Intercept, Background, Span value) of the real-time samplers were optimized respectively by conducting test performance evaluation during 7 days in field sampling. For example, inlet heating temperature of TEOM sampler controls $35{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ to minimize the fluctuation of the real-time measurement data and background value of BAM1020 is the key factor affecting the accuracy of $PM_{2.5}$ mass concentration. We classified the $PM_{2.5}$ concentration according to relative humidity (80%) to identify water absorbed in aerosols by measuring the ${\beta}$-ray samplers(BAM1020, FH62C_14) and TEOM. ${\beta}$-ray samplers were not strongly affected by relative humidity that the difference of the average $PM_{2.5}$ concentration was about 5%. On the other hand, The TEOM sampler overestimated $PM_{2.5}$ mass concentration about 15% at low relative humidity (<80%).

  • The various environmental problems that we face on today are basically about environmental quality. Since early 1960s affluent material was produced because of remarkable economic growth by many cooperations. However, for the lack of environmental policy, environmental pollutions has been serious. The central government should transfer the producing and consuming structure to environmental affinity through the regulations for developing Korea as a model of environmental nation which takes an active part in global environmental programme and in which the environment and economy are well harmonized. Moreover, the central government should take the lead in prevention of environmental pollution through the direct policies such as strengthening the discharge limit or setting up environmental basic institutions by securing budget for conserving environment. This thesis emphasize on the public institution among many environmental basic institutions for environmental anti-pollution project. It will find the problems with running those institutions, and will suggest the preview of improvement. Also, it is necessary to investigate of variation trend for inflow and pollutant loading to environmental infrastructure as increased of the diffusion rate as established and maintenance of sewer system. • After Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, study and maintenance of monitoring systems have been made at home and abroad. As concerns about radioactive contamination of water have increased in Korea, update of maintenance of managing radioactive materials in water is being made mainly by Ministry of Environment. In this study, we analysed current state of monitoring system modification in Japan, the country directly involved and neighboring country. According to the result, Japan modified the legislations first. Then Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) provides theoretical background of radiological monitoring. And Ministry of the Environment actually watches state of water pollution in public waters and underground water. Finally related agencies like local government are monitoring current state of radioactive contamination in water environment. By region, local monitoring stations share the investigation of the whole country. Also, additional monitoring is running around nuclear facilities. After Fukushima disaster, monitoring for area near Fukushima is added. Among the reference levels, management target value of drinking water and tap water is 10 Bq/kg, and those of public water and underground water are 1 Bq/L. Measuring intervals varied from every hour to once a year, regularly or irregularly depending on the investigation. The main measuring items are air dose rate, gross ${\alpha}$, gross ${\beta}$, ${\gamma}$ radionuclide, Cs-134, Cs-137, Sr-89, Sr-90, I-131, and so on. In comparison, regulations about general public water in Korea need to be modified, while those about area near nuclear facility and drinking water are organized well. In future, therefore, domestic system would be expected to be modified with making reference to the guidelines like WHO's one. As good case of applying international guideline to domestic environment, Japanese system could be a reference when general standard of radioactivity in public water is made in Korea.

  • There have been easily found a number of examples that misleading or unreasonable measuring data set of physical variables are often produced in the field and the laboratory. The primary reason is that the specific requirements of civil engineers are initially disregarded in designing the experimental apparatus. It results from a lack of mutual understanding and co-operating between the user group and the maker. Therefore, their fundamental knowledge and apprehension become indispensible in order to obtain measuring data with high confidence and good quality In this study it is shortly explained the basic structure and the operation system of the experimental equipments commonly used at the present. A simple measuring set is developed which is quite easy for a general civil engineer to design and operate without any other specialty of mostly electricity electronics. Based upon this requirement, one of data logger named PPDL8 is newly designed by making use of the parallel port in the personal computer, consisting of multi-channels able to measure 8 different point values simultaneously. It can also use many valuable sub-programs existing in PC because the user makes his own programs necessary for measurement, by himself. Of all things, it has a great advantage to increase the applicability of field measurements much larger when adopting the notebook computer to operate with small battery only. In addition this study gives, in fact, the excellent agreements of in-situ field variables by showing their measuring results of temperature, distance and turbidity.

  • The objective of this paper is to compare the applicability of assimilable organic carbon (AOC) or biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) for quantifying biodegradable organic material (BOM) and bio-stability in distribution systems for a variety of finished waters. The study the data is derived from was part of an AWWARF and Tampa Bay Water tailored collaboration project to determine the effect of blending different waters on distribution system water quality. Seven different finished waters were produced from surface, ground, or brackish water on site and fed 18 independent pilot distribution systems (PDSs), either as single finished water or as a blend of several finished waters. AOC and BDOC have often been used as indicators of bacterial regrowth potential in distribution systems. In this study, AOC was the more useful assay of the two for the BOM concentrations observed in the PDSs. BDOC did not distinguish BOM while AOC did at the low BOM levels from many of the advanced treatments (e.g. RO, $O^3/BAC$). AOC in contrast allowed much more meaningful calculations of the consumption or production of AOC as the blends passed through the PDSs even for very low BOM blends. In addition, meaningful trends corresponding to changes in heterophic plate count (HPC) were observed for AOC but not for BDOC. Moreover, AOC stability was associated with waters produced from advanced membrane treatment.

  • Smart sewage treatment plant means creating a safe and clean water environment by establishing an ICT-based real-time monitoring, remote control management and intelligent system for the entire sewage treatment process. The core technology of such a smart sewage treatment plant can be operation control technology using measuring instruments. This research team analyzed and suggested the operation control technologies necessary for the establishment of the intelligent business by referring to the intelligent research projects of the sewage treatment plant in progress in Korea. As a result of the analysis, a total of six removal technologies were presented, including control by scale, reflow water control, linked treated water control, chemical quantity control, winter operation control, and total organic carbon control. By size, standards that can be classified into small and medium-sized large-scale are presented, and in the case of reflow water control, the location of water quality and flow sensors capable of managing reflow water is suggested. In the case of the linked treated water control, the influence and control points of the linked treated water on the sewage treatment plant were presented, and in the case of the chemical injection volume control, a system capable of optimizing the amount of chemical injection according to the introduction of an intelligent sewage treatment plant was presented. In the case of winter operation, the sensors and pumps to be controlled are suggested when considering the decrease in nitrification due to the decrease in water temperature. In the case of total organic carbon control, an interlocking system considering the total amount of pollution in the future was proposed. These operation control scenarios are expected to be used as basic data to be used in intelligent sewage treatment algorithms and scenarios in the future.

  • Currently, a vast amount of hydrologic data is accumulated in real-time through automatic water level measuring instruments in agricultural reservoirs. At the same time, false and missing data points are also increasing. The applicability and reliability of quality control of hydrological data must be secured for efficient agricultural water management through calculation of water supply and disaster management. Considering the characteristics of irregularities in hydrological data caused by irrigation water usage and rainfall pattern, the Korea Rural Community Corporation is currently applying the Hampel filter as a water level data quality management method. This method uses window size as a key parameter, and if window size is large, distortion of data may occur and if window size is small, many outliers are not removed which reduces the reliability of the corrected data. Thus, selection of the optimal window size for individual reservoir is required. To ensure reliability, we compared and analyzed the RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient) of the corrected data and the daily water level of the RIMS (Rural Infrastructure Management System) data, and the automatic outlier detection standards used by the Ministry of Environment. To select the optimal window size, we used the classification performance evaluation index of the error matrix and the rainfall data of the irrigation period, showing the optimal values at 3 h. The efficient reservoir automatic calibration technique can reduce manpower and time required for manual calibration, and is expected to improve the reliability of water level data and the value of water resources.

  • This study observed changes in survival, growth performance and water quality for 90 days to confirm the possibility of Leiocassis ussuriensis farming using Biofloc technology (BFT) using Bacillus subtilis. Feed and molasses were added to the experimental tank to produce BFT water before planting the experiment, and B. subtilis was inoculated to stabilize the water quality for 40 days. The survival rate of the experimental fish was 92.7±3.2% in the control group and 95.8±3.3% in the BFT group. The Weight gain (WG) was 118.1±9.0% of the control and 197.7±15.6% of the BFT, and the Specific growth rate (SGR) was 0.87±0.5% of the control and 1.21±0.06% of the BFT. As for the feed efficiency, the control was 43.7±2.6% and the BFT was measured at 70.1±4.1%, indicating that the feed efficiency of the BFT was higher. As a result of measuring the water quality change during the experimental period, pH was reduced in both the control and the BFT, and Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) did not show any change in the control, but the BFT showed a significant increase at 90 days. NH4+-N and NO2--N showed a significant increase from the 30 days of the experiment in the control, but showed no change in the BFT. In conclusion, as a result of applying the BFT system using B. subtilis to the process of cultivating Leiocassis ussuriensis, the water quality tended to stabilize, and the growth rate and feed efficiency were found to be higher than those of the control, confirmiWng that it had a positive effect.
