This study investigated the impact of packaging methods coupled with high barrier packaging loaded with titanium dioxide (TiO2) on the quality of chilled pork. The experiment consisted of three treatment groups: air packaging (AP), vacuum packaging (VP), and vacuum antibacterial packaging (VAP). Changes in total viable count (TVC), pH value, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) value, sensory attributes, and water holding capacity of pork were analyzed at 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 d. TVC of the VAP group was 5.85 Log CFU/g at 12 d, which was lower than that of AP (6.95 Log CFU/g) and VP (5.93 Log CFU/g). The antibacterial film incorporating TiO2 effectively inhibited microorganism growth. The VAP group exhibited the lowest pH value and TVB-N value among all the treatment groups at this time. The findings demonstrated that the application of VAP effectively preserved the sensory attributes of pork, the hardness, cohesiveness and adhesiveness of pork in VAP group were significantly superior than those in AP group (p<0.05), but not significantly compared with VP group. On the 12 d, the CIE a* value of pork in VAP group was significantly higher (p<0.05). This exhibited that VAP could effectively maintain the freshness of chilled pork and extend the shelf life for 3 d compared to the AP group. These findings provide empirical evidence to support the practical implementation of TiO2-loaded packaging film in the food industry.
Wood biomass, such as sawdust, particles, and chips from the wood industry, can be potentially used as a composite product. Chip block pallets (CBP) are composite products that can be produced from industrial wood waste and are in high demand in the logistics sector. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the production of CBP from teak wood biomass with varying polyurethane contents. In addition, this study analyzed the optimum particle-size composition was determined. The CBP production of CBP be divided into two stages. The first stage evaluated the use of polyurethane adhesive content, whereas the second stage considered the effect of particle size composition. The 9 × 9 × 9 cm3 of CBP with 0.6 g/cm3 target density was fabricated using a cold press. The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA) standards were used to evaluate the density, moisture content, dimensional stability, water absorption, compressive strength (CS), and screw-holding strength (SHS) of our CBP products. The mechanical and physical properties of CBP products were investigated. As a result, the CBP sample prepared using 4-14 mesh particle size and 4.5% adhesive content showed the optimal strength values, such as CS of 14.67 MPa and SHS of 371.50 N. These findings demonstrate that the CBPs derived from teak wood waste closely resemble commercial chip blocks and have the potential to replace wood bearings as pallet pads.
This study was conducted to validate the growth and productivity of cucumber hydroponics using coir as the medium, different types of nutrient solutions and formal methods, in order to select the most efficient cultivation method. The nutrient solutions consisted of culture solution (S) and raw water (W), the planting methods were rockwool cube seedlings (RC), rockwool plug seedlings (RP), and slab directly seedlings (DS). The reference date was set the sowing date. The initial growth showed a significant increase in the culture solution treatment, the differences among treatments decreased as the growth period lengthened. There was no apparent correlation between the planting methods and growth, but different results were observed among the same planting methods depending on nutrient solution used. Similarly, productivity followed a similar trend, with significantly higher harvest in the culture solution treatment during the initial harvest period of 6-8 weeks after sowing, but the harvest gap among treatments were diminished in the after period. The cumulative harvest was significantly higher in the culture solution treatment due to the initial difference in harvest quantity. Plant growth and fruit productivity exhibited a similar trend, showing a linear relationship. There was no correlation among the planting methods, but direct seedling with the culture solution showed the highest initial growth and harvests due to stable nutrient and moisture supply in the initial root zone. Therefore, it is believed that direct seeding method on the culture solution medium would be most advantageous for plant growth and productivity. Additionally, it is expected to contribute to cost effectiveness from an economic perspective through simplification of the cultivation process, labor costs and production cost reduction

The objective of this study was to investigate the physico-chemical characteristics of chicken breast surimi processed by four times washing (C) and adjustment to pH 3.0 (T1) and pH 11.0 (T2). Water, crude protein, myofibrillar protein and yield of the treatment C were lower compared to other two treatments. Crude fat of T2 was higher than other two treatments. pH, WHC, breaking force and deformation were not different among the treatments. Shear force of T2 was the highest, followed by T1 and C. L* of T2 and a* of T1 were lower than other two treatments. b* of C was the highest, while T2 was the lowest. Brittleness and hardness in textural properties were not different among the treatments. Cohesiveness of T1 was the lowest among three treatments. Springiness and chewiness of T1 and T2 were higher than those of treatment C, respectively. Gumminess of T2 were higher compared to C and T1. Appearance and flavor in sensory evaluation were the highest in T1 and the lowest in C among three treatments. Color, aroma, juiciness, tenderness and overall acceptability were not different among the treatments. In conclusion, physico-chemical quality of chicken breast surimi was the highest in T2 among three treatments.
Biological activities such as anti-oxidative and anti-microbial of the Seungmakalgeuntang, a traditional prescription, were evaluated. The electron donating ability of water, ethanol, supercritical fluid and 1,3-butylene glycol extract of Seungmakalgeuntang showed more than 50% at a 100 ppm concentration. At a 1000 ppm concentration, the superoxide dismutase-like activities of ethanol and supercritical fluid extract of Seungmakalgeuntang showed less than 50%. xanthine oxidase inhibition effect of the supercritical fluid extract showed more than 70% at a 1,000 ppm concentration, which was higher than vitamin C. From the measurement on lipid oxidation, the $Fe^{2+}$ chelating abilities of the supercritical fluid extract of Seungmakalgeuntang was more than 60% at a 100 ppm concentration. Also the $Cu^{2+}$ chelating abilities of supercritical fluid extract Seungmkalgeuntang was showed more than 60% at a 500 ppm concentration. Clear zones formed by sample against the human skin-resident microflora such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acne of ethanol and supercritical fluid extract of Seungmakalgeuntang showed the highest among all the extracts tested using a 4mg/disc. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against both S. epidermidis and S. aureus showed 2,500 ppm in the extract of the supercritical fluid.
The morphological, anatomical and physiological traits were eximined for Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa which is an important planting species in Korea. The results obtained are as follows: 1. External characters in the leaf shape and chaff shape in the catkin were inherited as incomplete dominance but nectar gland was inherited as dominance. 2. Among the 15 selected clones, 9 clones were male, 2 clones female and 2 clones monoecious. 3. There were well-developed cork layers and bast fiber bundles in the bark. 4. Primordial leaves composed of 3 layers of cells and those undifferentiated into palisade and spongy parenchymas differed in its origin. 5. Leaf scare consisted of two kinds of tissues; one is connected to vascular bundle and the other not to vascular bundle. Tissues which had been connected to vascular bundle were isolated with only 2 or 3 layers of cork cells from the outside. 6. There was complicated arrangement in the vascular bundle of petioles. 7. Growth of the hybrid was sensitively influenced by external temperature, day-length and amount of light. In particular, it was apparent in height growth. 8. Flatness, loam soils and a $60{\times}60cm$ spacing might be best factors for the growth of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa. 9. The rooting of 15 clones was dependant upon external factors. 10. The growth of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa was best at around 80% of soil moisture content on the basis of plot water capacity. 11. Temperature difference between inside and outside stems below 100cm during the winter was the greatest at the south among seasons and among directions. 12. The sap movement was markedly influenced by air temperature, relative humidity in forest stand and moisture content in stem. 13. Total sugars in the cortex changed with season but did not differ in the dircetion of the stem. 14. Isoperoxidase variations in the leaf were different among 15 clones. Thus, it may be useful as a criterium for clonal identification. 15. The rate of soil moisture content decreased at a rapid slope was faster than that at a slow slope. Poor growth of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa at the slope was probably due to depletion of soil moisture.
The 7-week feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of one experimental diet (ED) and five different commercial diets (CDs) on growth and body composition of juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. An ED was formulated to contain 50.0% crude protein (CP) from fishmeal, casein, zein and wheat flour and 15.0% crude lipid (CL) from squid liver oil. Five CDs for seawater fish were two domestic E commercial diet (DECD) and C commercial diet (DCCD), three imported H commercial diet (IHCD), M commercial diet (IMCD) and O commercial diet (IOCD) containing 53.1~58.0% CP and 4.8~12.7% CL, respectively. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of juvenile olive flounder initially weighing $29.1{\pm}0.8g/fish\;(mean{\pm}SD)$ in a flow-through seawater system with a water temperature of $23.4{\sim}28.0^{\circ}C$. Weight gain (WG) was significantly greatest in fish fed the IMCD; intermediate responses were observed for fish fed the DECD, DCCD, and IOCD, while the IHCD and the ED produced the lowest WG values. Feed efficiencies (FE) were similar to WG excluding fish fed the DCCD; FE was also greatest in fish fed the DCCD. Survival with no significant difference approached 100% for fish fed the all six diets in this experiment. Whole-body crude protein and ash contents were not affected excluding moisture and crude lipid by the different type of diets. Therefore, type of diets appeared to be important factor in influencing WG, FE and whole-body moisture and crude lipid of juvenile olive flounder; the best diet for juvenile olive flounder was determined to be the imported commercial M diets containing intermediate protein (55.9%) and lipid (12.7%) in natural seawater based on highest WG, and FE, respectively. This study indicates that the one commercially formulated diet containing intermediate protein and lipid used in this experiment could be a practical diet for juvenile olive flounder; these differences in growth performance between ED and CDs may be due to different dietary protein and lipid levels.

Textile industry is considered as one of the most polluting sectors in terms of effluent composition and volume of discharge. It is well known that the effluents from textile dying industry contain not only chromatic substances but also large amounts of organic compounds and insolubles. The azo dyes generate huge amount of pollutions among many types of pigments. In general, the electrochemical treatments, separating colors and organic materials by oxidation and reduction on electrode surfaces, are regarded as simpler and faster processes for removal of pollutants compared to other wastewater treatments. In this paper the electrochemical degradation characteristics of dye wastewater containing CI Direct Blue 15 were analyzed. The experiments were performed with various anode materials, such as RuO2/Ti, PtO2/Ti, IrO2/Ti and graphite, with stainless steel for cathode. The optimal anode material was located by changing operating conditions like electrolyte concentration, current density, reaction temperature and initial pH. The degradation efficiency of dye wastewater increased in proportion to the electrolyte concentration and the current density for all anode materials, while the temperature effect was dependent on the kind. The performance orders of anode materials were RuO2/Ti > PtO2/Ti > IrO2/Ti > graphite in acid condition and RuO2/Ti > IrO2/Ti > PtO2/Ti > graphite in neutral and basic conditions. As a result, RuO2/Ti demonstrated the best performance as an anode material for the electrochemical treatment of dye wastewater.
