Despite the recent improvement in tunnel excavation technique, Tunnel collapse accidents still happen. This paper suggest two typical cases in unconsolidated ground condition. Collapse causes of each case were analyzed by the measurement records and numerical simulation, and then mechanism of tunnel collapse was investigated about each case. From this study, the crucial indicators of tunnel collapse were the variation of shear strain and ground water level, also, tunnel collapse deeply related to how shear deformation around tunnel was developed according to the excavation step.
The composition, structure and some of the features of spatial distribution of fouling communities in the cooling system tunnels of Heat and Power Station Vladivostok City were determined. Three groups of animals, possessing features expressive of topological differentiation as well as categorical differences based on dominant and subdominant species, were clearly distinguished in the fouling community of the water intake tunnel. These are Jassa marmorata on the tunnel vault, Balanus rostratus on the walls, and Mytilus trossulus on the bottom. The group from the tunnel vault should be clearly related to 'physically controlled' communities, whereas the groups from the walls and bottom, being also physically controlled, show many of the features of 'biologically balanced' communities. Thermal treatment of tunnels, performed in summertime, is grossly inefficient, since mytilids continue to settle in September-November as well. In order to prevent intensive settlement of Mytilus trossulus larvae it is recommended that the water intake tunnels integral to the cooling system be placed deeper than 15m.
This study investigated the applicability of a two step microfiltration(MF) and reverse osmosis(RO) membrane system for reuse of tunnel wastewater. In this two step process, the MF system first treated only micropollutants in tunnel wastewater such as suspended solids(SS) and heavy metals, achieving less than 0.2 NTU turbidity, less than 1.1 mg/L chemical oxygen demand($COD_{Mn}$) and less than 0.8 mg/L total manganese(Mn). The RO system then removed over 95 % of the remaining pollutnats and particles, resulting in less than 0.02 NTU turbidity, less than 0.5 mg/L chemical oxygen demand($COD_{Mn}$), less than 0.04 mg/L total nitrogen(T-N) and less than 0.01 mg/L total phosphorus(T-P). In particular, addition of an RO system could lead to markedly reduced high salt concentrations in tunnel wastewater, approaching almost zero. Thus, reclaimed water using the combined membrane system could satisfy current South Korean regulations concerning wastewater reuse(turbidity ${\leq}2.0$ NTU; T-N ${\leq}10mg/L$; T-P ${\leq}0.5mg/L$; Salinity ${\leq}250mg{\cdot}Cl/L$).

Recently concern for subsea tunnels is increasing, The effect of high water pressure can not be ignored in the case of a deep subsea tunnel. Reinforcement like grouting is necessary for the stability of such a subsea tunnel. In this study, therefore, it was investigated how the water barrier and shear strength increment resulted from grouting had an effect on the stability of a subsea tunnel. To this end, two-dimensional hydromechanical coupled analyses were performed for a sensitivity analysis in terms of different range, permeability coefficient, and cohesion of grouting reinforcement for the rock classes I, III, and V with respect to RMR system. The mutual relationship between strength increment and water pressure increased by barrier effect due to grouting was investigated by analyzing the numerical results.

This study is planned with the aim of developing a systematic construction process based on the scientific and engineering theory of the water-sealing grouting construction applied to the tunnel excavation process during the construction of the downtown underground traffic network, so that the construction quality of the relatively backward domestic tunnel water-sealing grouting construction is improved and continuously maintained no matter who constructs it. The main contents of the improved tunnel water-sealing grouting can be largely examined in the classification of tunnel water-sealing grouting application and the definition of grouting materials, the correlation analysis of groundwater pressure conditions with groundwater inflow, the study of the characteristic factors of bedrock, and the element technologies and injection management techniques required for grouting construction. Looking at the trends in global research, research in the field of theoretical-based science and engineering grouting is actively progressing in Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Norway, etc.), Japan, Germany, and the United States. Therefore, in this study, the algorithm is established through theoretical analysis of the elements of tunnel water-sealing grouting construction techniques to provide an integrated solution including a construction process that can effectively construct tunnel water-sealing grouting construction.

A surface piercing propeller (SPP) in tunnel has been proposed recently as a new propulsion system for a high speed air cavity ship. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of the SPP in tunnel through a series of model tests. A model propulsion system is placed on a dummy body made of Acrylics. The tunnel is divided into two regions by a guide vane extending from the inlet to the center of the propeller shaft. Air has been supplied from an air nozzle placed at the bottom of the dummy body and the changes in propeller performances caused by the air flow are investigated. The measurements are done for open water and in-tunnel conditions, both for fully and partially submerged propeller. The influence of the guide vane configurations on the propeller performance is also studied. The experiments are performed at the variable pressure circulation water channel of Inha University

The purpose of a rock bolt is to improve the mechanical performance of a jointed-rock mass. The performance of a rock bolt is generally evaluated by conducting a field pullout test, as the analytical or numerical evaluation of the rock bolt behavior still remains difficult. In this study, wide range of field test was performed to investigate the pullout resistance of rock bolts considering influencing factors such as the rock type, water bearing conditions, rock bolt type and length. The test results showed that the fully grouted rock bolt (FGR) in water-bearing rocks can be inadequate to provide the required pullout resistance, meanwhile the inflated steel tube rock bolt (ISR) satisfied required pullout resistance, even immediately after installation in water-bearing conditions. The ISR was particularly effective when the water inflow into a drill hole is greater than 1.0 l/min. The effect of the rock bolt failure on the tunnel stability was investigated through numerical analysis. The results show that the contribution of the rock bolt to the overall stability of the tunnel was not significant. However, it is found that the rock bolt can effectively reinforce the jointed-rock mass and reduce the possibility of local collapses of rocks, thus the importance of the rock bolt should not be overlooked, regardless of the overall stability.
Most shield tunnels are designed based on the assumption of a undrained condition. But they are operated as drained tunnels in which underground water flows and passes through a drainage facility. Therefore, it is necessary that the drainage condition be considered in the shield tunnel design. In this research, new testing device which can simulate the underground tunnel located below ground water level, was developed. Total stress and pore water pressure were examined and an inflow water into an inner pipe was measured using the testing device. Test results showed that the total stress, which was the sum of effective stress and pore pressure, increased more in an undrained condition and an inflow water into an inner pipe was proportional to the water pressure but inversely proportional to the loading stress. Consequently, if the drainage is considered in the shield tunnel design, the more economical design can be expected because of the stress reduction of the lining.
Solutions of the water pressure and groundwater inflow distribution along the tunnel perimeter in a half-infinite aquifer were investigated considering the conditions of the constant head and constant water pressure. It is assumed that the circular tunnel is buried in a fully saturated, homogeneous, isotropic and half-infinite space. Coordinate transformation technique was adopted, the problem of solving the control equations of water pressure in the Cartesian coordinate was transformed to that in the bipolar coordinate system, which can significantly simplify the derivation procedure of the water pressure and inflow distribution. The validation results show the accuracy and advantage of the proposed approach.
