  • In results of accomplishing fundamental study to improve the flocculant-mixing of the Flash-Mixer in Onsan Water-Treatment Plant at the small cost, We obtained 8.9% of mixing-efficiency from the field data and 3.2% of the characteristic flow-ratio as the available maximum volume-ratio in this Water-Treatment Plant. The optimum elements with the deflector diameter of 400 mm and deflector angle of $145^{\circ}$ at the flow ratio of 3.2% could be obtained from the expanded study on the ground of the fundamental study. Finally, the efficiency could be improved about 510% from 8.9% to 45.4% and the average turbidity could be improved about 14%.

  • Growth characters and ingredient contents of two-year-old bellflower (Platycodon grandiflorum) roots were investigated under both control and soil moisture treatment condition using soil moisture control system including soil sensing and automatic water supply chain in this study. Root diameter, fine root number, root length, fresh weight and dry weight of the plant were significantly influenced by the automatic water treatment, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%, respectively. Ingredient contents of the two-year-old roots in bellflower plants were detected in the 20% and 50% of controlled soil moisture content. Contents of amino acids were decreased by the soil moisture treatment, meanwhile, contents of minerals were not showed significant decrease except for phosphorus content. Showing no difference in proline and tyrosine, fourteen of the amino acid contents were gradually decreased by the increased soil moisture contents, with significant decrease in serine, glycine, alanine, leucine, lysine and histidine at 20% treatment.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the possible installation of small hydro-power plant at the discharge point of Gumi sewage treatment plant (STP) using treated wastewater. Sufficient amount of water to transfer to electric power and the selection of proper location are two essential elements for the construction of small hydro-power facility. Preliminary analysis based on site visit and existing data in Gumi STP were made. Capacity of the small hydro-power plants and exact location were determined by geomorphological condition and flow duration characteristics. Flow duration characteristics and its duration curve were identified using monthly rainfall data in Gumi STP. Relevant facts of small hydro-power system in other STP were referred to adopt to Gumi STP situation. Flowrate of treated effluents and effective head between flow chamber and the location of hydraulic turbine in Gumi STP are found to be $3.70m^3$/sec and 3.5m respectively. Electric generation rate based on this feasibility study was estimated to be 86.3kW/h. Yearly electric generation rate was expected to be 932.4MMh. Proposed small hydro-power plant construction in Gumi STP is to be reasonable.

  • Clean development mechanism (CDM) validity study was conducted to suggest better and more adaptable CDM scenario on water treatment plant (WTP). Potential four scenarios for CDM project; improvement of intake pumping efficiency, hydro power plant construction, solar panel construction and system optimization of mechanical mixing process were evaluated on S-WTP in Korea. Net present value (NPV) of each scenario was estimated based on sensitivity analysis with the variable factors to investigate the CDM validity percentile. Hydro power plant construction was the best option for CDM business with 97.76% validity and $1,127,069 mean profit by 9,813 $tonsCO_2e$/yr reduction. CDM validity on improvement of intake pumping efficiency was 90.2% with $124,305 mean profit by huge amount of $CO_2$ mitigation (10,347 $tonsCO_2e$/yr). System optimization of mechanical mixing process reduced 15% of energy consumption (3,184 $tonsCO_2e$/yr) and its CDM validity and mean profit was 77.25% and $23,942, respectively. Solar panel construction could make the effect of 14,094 $tonsCO_2$ mitigation annually and its CDM validity and mean profit was 64.68% and $228,487, respectively.

  • Manganese in sludge precipitated during water treatment might be soluble again in effluent from sludge thickener. If that happens, the manganese concentration of effluent from water treatment plant will exceed the limit for clean reservation. In this study the influence of pH on Mn concentration of effluent from sludge thickener of water treatment plant was investigated. When the pHs of sludge solutions increased with alkaline materials such as NaOH, KOH, CaO, $Ca(OH)_2$, $CaCO_3$, the Mn concentrations of sludge solutions decreased under the limit. The Mn concentration of effluent from sludge thickener could be controlled with waste limestones from beneficiation process at limestone mine as an alkaline material.

  • The inhibition effect of cinnamon plant extract as a green corrosion inhibitor for steel in sulfide polluted salt water was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM). The results showed that cinnamon plant extract in sulfide polluted salt water is a good corrosion inhibitor with inhibition efficiency reached to 80% at 250 ppm of the plant extract. The adsorption of cinnamon obeys Temkin adsorption isotherm, and acts as a mixed-type of inhibitor but dominantly as a cathodic inhibitor in sulfide polluted salt water.

  • In this paper, we present a Smart Water Treatment Plant using Zigbee USN devices and a real-time monitoring system in K-water Flow Meter Calibration Center Building. For verification, the data of vertical type WTP such as flow rate, pressure, water level and water temperature are obtained by the Zigbee USN devices, operating in 2.45 GHz band, and be wirelessly surveilled by the real-time monitoring system. The received data from the sensor is transmitted to the data processing device, and then the processed data can be monitored on a smart phone. Consequently, the pilot plant based on the low-cost and high-efficiency USN has been developed with the performance analysis for the communication network and remote monitoring system on mobile devices.

  • In coagulant control of water treatment plants, rule extraction, one of datamining categories, was performed for coagulant control of a water treatment plant. Clustering methods were applied to extract control rules from data. These control rules can be used for fully automation of water treatment plants instead of operator's knowledge for plant control. To perform fuzzy clustering, there are some coefficients to be determined and these kinds of studies have been performed over decades such as clustering indices. In this study, statistical indices were taken to calculate the number of clusters. Simultaneously, seed points were found out based on hierarchical clustering. These statistical approaches give information about features of clusters, so it can reduce computing cost and increase accuracy of clustering. The proposed algorithm can play an important role in datamining and knowledge discovery.

  • The operation of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is a complex task which requires to consider several aspects: adapting to always changing influent composition and volume, ensuring treated effluents quality complies with local regulations, ensuring dissolved oxygen levels in biological reaction tanks are sufficient to avoid anoxic conditions etc. all of it while minimizing usage of chemicals and power consumption. The traditional way of managing WWTPs consists in having employees on the field measure various parameters and make decisions based on their judgment and experience which holds various concerns such as the low frequency of data, errors in measurement and difficulty to analyze historical data to propose optimal solutions. In the case of activated sludge WWTPs, parts of the treatment process can be automated and controlled in order to satisfy various control objectives. The models developed by the International Water Association (IWA) have been extensively used worldwide in order to design and assess the performance of various control strategies. In this work, we propose to review most recent WWTP automation initiatives around the world and identify most currently used control parameters and control architectures. We then suggest a framework to select WWTP model, control parameters and control scheme in order to develop and benchmark control strategies for WWTP automation.
