In general, a cooling tower has two major noise sources, one is the fan and the other is the falling water. The fan noise is produced by passage of its blades through the air and radiates from the fan stack. Noises from the falling water are caused by splashing and dropping of water cascading over the internal filler of the cooling tower and into the basin and radiate from the louvered face. In this paper, the noise measurements and its frequency analysis are carried out for the locations facing the louvered side and near the fan stack referring the related code and standards in order to study the noise characteristics of the induced-draft cooling tower, especially for the buildings. As a result, it is found that for every doubling of distance from the noise source the noise level decreases by 2~4dBA in the near field with reflect surfaces and decreases by about 6dBA also in the far field without reflect surfaces. As a supplement to the noise measurements, a computer program with simple algorithm is developed in order to estimate the noise level at a distance from the cooling tower, so that the user could apply and modify it for the particular boundary conditions easily.
Seoulmetro has operated the air cooling equipment for 57 stations to improve services focused on our customers who use Seoulmetro during the summer season and has established every year. However, a new set of problems has arisen with the cooling tower to support a heat exchange of cooling water. The most important matter is loss of efficiency in the cooling tower. The leading cause of this problem is that we use an indoor type. As the cooling tower room is located in the underground of the city because of the residents near the station. Therefore It is difficult to establish the cooling tower on the ground. But it is unsuitable for the location requirements of the underground type because it has a limited space to set up the air cooling equipment, for example, the cooling tower and a ventilating opening. As a result of such an unfavorable condition, the cooling tower doesn't work efficiently and the warmth of cooling water because of insufficiency of a heat exchange and a refrigerator's technical obstacle such as a high-temperature and a high-pressure has arisen. To prevent this situation, the operator tend to reduce refrigerant. Accordingly, the efficiency of the air conditioning is getting lower and lower. Study wishes to analyze the matter to improve indoor cooling tower efficiency and recommend a best practice for a person who manage the establishment.
The cooling tower is a device for making a cooling water in the air conditioning system of building, and there are many kinds of cooling tower system for air conditioner. In this paper, we introduced the water cooling system with an enclosed tank and water ejecting system for evaporating the water in tank. The city water was used for a working fluid, and the cooling water is generated by evaporating latent heat in the tank with a $25{\sim}50mmHg$. The time to reaching this vacuum pressure was about $20{\sim}30minutes$, and cooling water was obtained the value of temperature difference ${\Delta}T=7^{\circ}C$.
The ozone/GAC process, sometimes termed BAC(Biological Activated Carbon) appeared to be effective for the removal of soluble organic matters in the drinking water Chabrol is a simple model for the simulation like as the variation of HPC and BDOC in the BAC tower. This study were carried out to calibrate of HPC and BDOC and to evaluate $H_1$ and $H_2$ of ozone-treated water with Chabrol model. BDOC values of the ozone-treated water and BAC effluent are analyzed using method of Levi and Joret. As the ozone-treated water and BAC Effluent are incubated, the HPC are increased up to 0.24 mgC/l and 0.09 mgC/l respectively. $H_1$ and $H_2$ of the ozone-treated water is 0.3 mgC/l and 0.349 mgC/l respectively and Chabrol model for BAC tower can be calibrated.

Cooling tower is an important equipment of the cooling systems for large buildings like factory and department store. Water used for cooling in cooling tower is reused continuously. If the water is polluted, corrosion and scale can happen at equipments and pipes. In order to prevent this problem, it is necessary to control the water quality using chemicals. To control the water quality, an automatic control system is designed, fabricated, and experimented. The control system is based on an imbedded microcontroller. Relays are used for power driving, an LCD and LED for display, and RS485 for remote data acquisition. Monitoring program is also developed for easy man-machine interface and extraction of data stored in the imbedded processor and EEPROM. The control system calculates amounts of chemicals necessary using sensor data and injects the chemicals into the cooling tower on proper time. The developed water quality control system is expected to reduce cost of maintenance and extend the lifetime of the cooling systems with low cost.

In order to provide effective operating conditions for the fan in a wet cooling tower with film fill, a new program to search for the minimum fan power was developed using a model of the optimal total annual cost of the tower based on Merkel's model. In addition, a type of design map for a cooling tower was also developed. The inlet water temperature and heat load were considered as key parameters. The present program was first validated using several typical examples. The results showed that for a given heat load, a three-dimensional graph of the fan power (z-axis), mass flux of air (x-axis, minimum fan power), and inlet water temperature (y-axis, maximum of minimum fan power) showed a saddle configuration. The minimum fan power increased as the heat load increased. The conventionally known fact that the most effective cooling tower operation coincides with a high inlet water temperature and low air flow rate can be replaced by the statement that there exists an optimum mass flux of air corresponding to a minimum fan power for a given inlet water temperature, regardless of the heat load.

A numerical study for performance analysis of a counterflow type forced draft tower and natural draft cooling tower has been performed based on the method using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal body fitted and non-staggered grid system. For solving the coupling problem between water and air, air enthalpy balance, moisture fraction balance, water enthalpy balance, and water mass balance equations are solved with Navier-Stoke’s equations simultaneously. For the effect of turbulence, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model is implied in this analysis. The predicted result of the present analysis is compared with the experimental data and the commercial software result to validate the present study, The predicted results show good agreement with the experimental data and the commercial software result. To investigate the influence of the cooling tower design parameters such as approach, range and wet bulb temperature, parametric studies are also peformed.
This research aims to assess the tight seismic risk curve of the intake tower at Geumgwang reservoir by considering the recorded historical earthquake data in the Korean Peninsula. The seismic fragility, a significant part of risk assessment, is updated by using Bayesian inference to consider the uncertainties and computational efficiency. The reservoir is one of the largest reservoirs in Korea for the supply of agricultural water. The intake tower controls the release of water from the reservoir. The seismic risk assessment of the intake tower plays an important role in the risk management of the reservoir. Site-specific seismic hazard is computed based on the four different seismic source maps of Korea. Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) method is used to estimate the annual exceedance rate of hazard for corresponding Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA). Hazard deaggregation is shown at two customary hazard levels. Multiple dynamic analyses and a nonlinear static pushover analysis are performed for deriving fragility parameters. Thereafter, Bayesian inference with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is used to update the fragility parameters by integrating the results of the analyses. This study proves to reduce the uncertainties associated with fragility and risk curve, and to increase significant statistical and computational efficiency. The range of seismic risk curve of the intake tower is extracted for the reservoir site by considering four different source models and updated fragility function, which can be effectively used for the risk management and mitigation of reservoir.
The objective of this study was to examine the recovery of the power plant cooling tower blowdown water (CTBD) by membrane distillation. The experiments were carried out using a flat plate poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane with a pore diameter of $0.22{\mu}m$ by a direct contact membrane distillation unit (DCMD). The effects of operating parameters such as transmembrane temperature difference (${\Delta}T$), circulation rate and operating time on permeate flux and membrane fouling have been investigated. The results indicated that permeate flux increased with increasing ${\Delta}T$ and circulation rate. Whereas maximum permeate flux was determined as $47.4L/m^2{\cdot}h$ at ${\Delta}T$ of $50^{\circ}C$ for all short term experiments, minimum permeate flux was determined as $7.7L/m^2{\cdot}h$ at ${\Delta}T$ of $20^{\circ}C$. While $40^{\circ}C$ was determined as the optimum ${\Delta}T$ in long term experiments. Inorganic and non-volatile substances caused fouling in the membranes.

The occurrence of white plume in the cooling tower is phenomenon that the steam in the air through the cooling tower fan is condensed again by the cold ambient air to become saturated moist air. Accordingly, this can cause many problems like spoiling landscape around the cooling tower, odor of ambient air, falling accident by frozenness in the winter, and traffic accident, etc. This study was to install the heat exchanger in the inside of the cooling tower in order to prevent the white plume phenomenon in the cooling tower without affecting the performance of cooling tower. In addition, this study was to discharge the part of cooling water into the atmosphere through the recirculation of heat exchanger after creating dry air by heating the saturated moist air to the dew point temperature. At that time, this study was to conduct the experimental study in order to secure the optimal design data to prevent the white plume in the cooling tower because it checked the dry·moist temperature and relative humidity in the inside·outside of cooling tower on the moist air, and evaluated the performance of the heat exchanger.
