  • Thermal structure of two-dimensional surface discharge of the heated water into a rectangular resesvoir is investigated by a laboratory simulation with a shallow open channel and a relatively large reservoir. Experimental study is focused on the nature of interfacial mixing between a flowing layer of the hot water and the underlying cold water. For various conditions, mean temperature field, surface velocity distribution and turbulent mixing process have been quantitatively observed. It is found that the Richardson number strongly affects the integral structure of the flow field, and the buoyancy plays a role to control the turbulent diffusion process.

  • A stabilized incompressible smoothed particles hydrodynamics (ISPH) method is utilized to simulate free falling rigid body into water domain. Both of rigid body and fluid domain are modeled by SPH formulation. The proposed source term in the pressure Poisson equation contains two terms; divergence of velocity and density invariance. The density invariance term is multiplied by a relaxed parameter for stabilization. In addition, large eddy simulation with Smagorinsky model has been introduced to include the eddy viscosity effect. The improved method is applied to simulate both of free falling vessels with different materials and water entry-exit of horizontal circular cylinder. The applicability and efficiency of improved method is tested by the comparisons with reference experimental results.

  • In this study, a method of simulating ephemeral stream runoff characteristics in Jeju watershed is newly suggested. The process based conceptual-physical scheme is established based on the SWAT-K and applied to Cheonmi-cheon watershed which shows the typical pattern of ephemeral stream runoff characteristics. For the proper simulation of this runoff, the intermediate flow and baseflow are controlled to make downward percolation should be dominant. The result showed that surface runoff simulated by using the modified scheme showed good agreement with observed runoff data. In addition, it was found that the estimated runoff directly affected the groundwater recharge rate. This conceptual model should be continuously progressed including rainfall interception, spatially estimated evapotranspiration and so forth for the reasonable simulation of the hydrologic characteristics in Jeju island.

전체적으로, 가장 선호되는 메커니즘은 two step으로 구성된 water assisted stepwise mechanism이었으며 모든 mechanism은 ab-initio calculation과 QM/MM-MD simulation이 수행되었다. water assisted stepwise mechanism을 살펴보면, 첫 번째 step에서 formamide의 carbonyl group이 hydrate되면서 gem-diol intermediate를 형성한다.

  • Free-surface flows with an arbitrary deformation, induced by a submerged hydrofoil, are simulated numerically, considering two-fluid flows of both water and air. The computation is performed by a finite volume method using unstructured meshes and an interface capturing scheme to determine the shape of the free surface. The method uses control volumes with an arbitrary number of faces and allows cell wise local mesh refinement. The integration in space is of second order, based on midpoint rule integration and linear interpolation. The method is fully implicit and uses quadratic interpolation in time through three time levels. The linear equations are solved by conjugate gradient type solvers, and the non-linearity of equations is accounted for through Picard iterations. The solution method is of pressure-correction type and solves sequentially the linearized momentum equations, the continuity equation, the conservation equation of one species, and the equations for two turbulence quantities. Finally, a comparison is quantitatively made at the same speed between the computation and experiment in which the grid sensitivity is numerically checked.

  • A three-dimensional numerical model for the simulation of meso-scale local circulation is developed and it is applied to the land and sea breezes which take place around Ulsan. The surface temperature and moisture on the land are determined by means of the surface heat budget with a layer of vegetation considered. The vertical diffusion coefficients of momentum, heat and specific humidity at the surface layer are obtained by the lever-2 model of the turbulence closure proposed by Yamada (1982). This model proved to be effective in simulating the structure of the land and sea breezes around Ulsan.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze the control variables according to condensation occurrence, to find the range in floor surface temperature and frequency of condensation, and to evaluate the control methods through simulations when the radiant heating system is used for cooling. Through the simulation analysis the control methods such as on/off control, variable flow control and outdoor reset with indoor temperature feedback control are evaluated and compared. The results show that the lowest floor surface temperature is around $23^{\circ}C$, the surface condensation can be prevented by controlling indoor humidity within 20g/kg(DA0, and that outdoor reset with indoor temperature feedback control is more appropriate than on/off control and variable flow control with regard to prevention of the condensation and thermal comfort.

  • Natural Phenomena are simulated to make computer users feel verisimilitude and be immersed in games or virtual reality. The important factor in simulating fluid such as water or sea using 3D rendering technology in games or virtual reality is real-time interaction and reality. There are many difficulties in simulating fluid models because it is controlled by many equations of each specific situation and many parameter values. In addition, it needs a lot of time in processing physically-based simulation. In this paper, I suggest simplified fluid-surface model in order to represent interaction between rigid body and fluid, and it can make faster simulation by improved processing. Also, I show movement of fluid surface which is come from collision of rigid body caused by reaction of fluid in representing interaction between rigid body and fluid surface. This natural fluid-surface model suggested in this paper is represented realistically in real-time using fluid dynamics veri similarly. And the fluid-surface model will be applicable in games or animation by realizing it for PC environment to interact with this.

  • In cases of water pollution accidents, accurate prediction for arrival time and concentration of contaminants in a river is essential to take proper measures and minimize their impact on downstream water intake facilities. It is critical to fully understand the behavior characteristics of contaminants on river surface, especially in case of oil spill accidents. Therefore, in this study, the effects of main parameters of advection and diffusion of contaminants were analyzed and validated by comparing the results of Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) simulation of Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC) model with those of Global Position System (GPS)-equipped drifter experiment. Prevention scenario modeling was accomplished by taking cases of movable weir operation into account. The simulated water level and flow velocity fluctuations agreed well with observations. There was no significant difference in the speed of surface particle movement between 5 and 10 layer modeling. Therefore, 5 layer modeling could be chosen to reduce computational time. It was found that full three dimensional modeling simulated wind effects on surface particle movements more sensitively than depth-averaged two dimensional modeling. The diffusion range of particles was linearly proportional to horizontal diffusivity by sensitivity analysis. Horizontal diffusivity estimated from the results of GPS-equipped drifter experiment was 0.096 m2/sec, which was considered to be valid for applying the LPT module in this area. Finally, the scenario analysis results showed that particle movements could be stagnant when discharge from the upstream weir was reduced, implying the possibility of securing time for mitigation actions such as oil boom installation and wiping oil contaminants. The outcomes of this study can help improve the prediction accuracy of particle tracking simulation to establish the most suitable mitigation plan considering the combination of movable weir operation.

  • Unsteady nonlinear wave motions on the free surface over a plane beach of constant slope are numerically simulated using a finite difference method in rectangular grid system. Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation are used for the computations. Irregular leg lengths and stars are employed near the boundaries of body and free surface to satisfy the boundary conditions. Also, the free surface which consists of markers or segments is determined every time step with the satisfaction of kinematic and dynamic free surface conditions. Moreover, marker-density method is also adopted to allow plunging jets impinging on the free surface. The second-order Stokes wave theory is employed for the generation of waves on the inflow boundary. For the simulation of wave breaking phenomena, the computations are carried out with the plane beach of constant slope in surf zone. The results are compared with other existing experimental results. Agreement between the experimental data and the computation results is good.
