  • Mungbean trypsin inhibitor (MBTI) was isolated and purified from Mung bean which has been used as a galenic and traditional food. MBTI and poly(ethylene glycol) were conjugated by using water soluble carbodiimide. We evaluated the therapeutic value of the MBTI and MBTI-PEG conjugate using animal models, sublethal septic shock model in guinea pig caused by pseudomonal elastase, shock model in rat caused by lipopolysaccharide, and the vascular permeability test by using pseudomonal elastase. In two shock model in guinea p Is and in rat, hypotesion shock was inhibited by pretreatment of MBTI. And also the vascular permeability caused by pseudomonal elastase reduced by pretreatment of MBTI. Also, therapeutic value of the MBTI-PEG conjugate was evaluated by using the sublethal septic shock model caused by pseudomonal elastase. The MBTI-PEG conjugate was more effective than native MBTI against pseudomonal elastase induced septic shock in guinea pig model.

  • The feed-water piping system constitutes a complex flow impedance network incorporating dynamic transfer characteristics which will amplify some pulsation frequencies. Understanding pressure pulsation waves for the feed-water recirculation piping system with cavitation problem of flow control valve is very important to prevent acoustic resonance. Feed water recirculation piping system is excited by potential sources of the shock pulse waves by cavitation of flow control valve. The pulsation becomes the source of structural vibration at the piping system. If it coincides with the natural frequency of the pipe system, excessive vibration results. High-level vibration due to the pressure pulsation affects the reliability of the plant piping system. This paper discusses the piping vibration due to the effect of shock pulsation by the cavitation of the flow control valves for the recirculation piping of feed-water pump system in combined cycle power plants.

  • Underwater lighting is installed in water tanks, fountains and pools in waterparks, it has direct contact with water and in case of any electrical failure due to faults from electrical equipment, there is a lot of electrical shock risk. In this paper, we proposed an improvement plan of the standard of judgment of electrical code which is MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy) notification by fact finding survey and analysis of the domestic and foreign codes.

  • This paper presents the evaluation electric shock risk in water so that we made and designed a bathtub which is the same size in real public bath. and then we did an experiment, provided of electric leakage in various conditions so, we measured how to form an electric gradient and knew the electric gradient is formed variously under exposed conductor in water. also we made certain that electric shock risk is down if we insert an insulated pipe in bathtub pipe which is prevent from being formed the electric field sharply.

열처리에 의한 케일 새싹의 기능성물질 축적 (Heat Shock Treatments Induce the Accumulation of Phytochemicals in Kale Sprouts)

  • 이번 연구는 새싹채소 재배 시 고온의 물을 이용한 열처리가 케일 새싹의 항산화물질과 항암성물질 등과 같은 기능성물질 축적에 영향을 주는지 확인하고자 수행되었다. 실험I 에서는 파종 후 4일째 40, 50, $60^{\circ}C$의 증류수가 담긴 항온조에 각각 10, 30, 60초 동안 침지하여 열처리 하였고, 실험II 에서는 $50^{\circ}C$의 증류수에 각각 10, 20, 30, 45, 60초 침지처리 하였다. 열처리 한 케일 새싹은 다시 정상적인 생육 환경에서 2일 동안 추가적으로 재배되었다. 열처리 전, 후에 생체 중, 건물중, 전해질 유출 정도, 총 페놀 농도, 항산화도, 총 플라보노이드 농도, 페닐알라닌 암모니아-리아제 활성, 글루코시놀레이트 함량을 측정하였다. 실험I의 결과, 열처리 후 2일째 대조구에 비해 모든 처리구의 생체중, 건물중이 감소되었으며, 특히 $60^{\circ}C$ 열처리가 40, $50^{\circ}C$의 열처리보다 그 정도가 심했다. 세포 파괴에 의한 전해질 유출 정도 또한 $60^{\circ}C$에서 가장 높게 나타났다. 총 페놀 농도는 $50^{\circ}C$의 열처리에서 대조구에 비해 유의적으로 증가했으며 항산화도 또한 비슷한 경향을 보였다. 실험 II의 결과 $50^{\circ}C$ 열처리는 실험I의 결과와 같이 생체중의 감소를 보였지만 그 정도는 크지 않았으며 건물중에서는 대조구와 유의적 차이가 없었다. 열처리 후 2일째 모든 처리구는 대조구에 비해 유의적으로 높은 총 페놀 축적을 유도하였다. $50^{\circ}C$에서 20초 이상의 열처리는 대조구에 비해 약 1.5배 이상 총 페놀 농도를 증가시켰으며, 항산화도는 대조구에 비해 약 1.2배 유의적으로 높았고, 총 플라보노이드 농도 또한 대조구에 비해 높은 수준을 나타냈다. 페닐알라닌 암모니아-리아제의 활성은 열처리 24시간째에 대조구보다 모든 처리구에서 높게 나타나, 열처리가 이차대사산물의 생합성을 유도하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 열처리 후 2일째 글루코시놀레이트의 함량은 20초 열처리에서 유의적으로 가장 높은 값을 나타냈다. 따라서, 케일 새싹 재배 시 열처리는 항산화 및 항암물질과 같은 기능성물질의 축적을 유도하여 케일 새싹의 영양학적 품질향상을 도모할 수 있는 잠재적인 수단임을 확인할 수 있었다.

Experimental Study of Time-Dependent Evolution of Water Droplet Breakup in High-Speed Air Flows

  • This paper presents experimental data on water droplet breakup in high-speed air flows. Exact-time-dependent evolution of wave and droplet interaction as well as breakup processes were optically visualized using a shadowgraph technique. Droplet experiments were conducted in a shock tube. Five flow conditions were used with an incident shock wave Mach number from 1.40 to 2.19 with Weber number based on the droplet initial diameter from 2300 to 38000, respectively. This corresponds to post-shock flow speeds varying from subsonic to supersonic. The considered droplet diameters were 2.0 mm to 3.6 mm. Some interesting wave patterns in the near wake were found. The present data shows that with an increase in the Weber number the droplet acceleration coefficient decreases and the level of decrease was weaker for the case of higher Mach numbers. This state of affair is different to the existing data in literature. Possible reasons are discussed.

Osmotic Shock에 의한 Vibrio vulnificus 사멸에 관한 연구 (Bactericidal Effect of Osmotic Shock Against Vibrio vulnificus)

  • As a process to establish an effective preventive measure of V. vulnificus septicemia, bactericidal effect of distilled water against V. vulnificus was studied. When about $2.0{\times}10^7\;CFU/ml$ of V. vulnificus was inoculated in distilled water, a dramatic decrease in the number of viable bacteria by 5 to $6LOG_{10}$ was observed in 5 minutes. Bactericidal kinetic curves could be divided into the first rapid killing phase until 1 minute and the later slow killing phase after then, showing the heterogeneity of the bacterial population inoculated. When V. vulnificus was inoculated in saline solutions having various salinities, significant decrease in the number of viable bacteria was noted only at salinities under 0.2%. The higher was the concentration of NaCl, the greater was the degree of protection against osmotic shock. When glucose, NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaCl_2$ were diluted with deionized water to give same osmolarities and V. vulnificus was inoculated in each of them to compare the bactericidal curves plotted during the first 5 minutes after inoculation, the protection efficiencies were in the order of $MgCl_2>CaCl_2{\gg}NaCl{\gg}glucose$. Above results indicate that treatment(or thorough washing) of contaminated sea animals or other products with distilled water can be used as a preventive measure of V. vulnificus septicemia, and divalent cations can protect V. vulnifcus to osmotic shock with high efficiency.

SBR에서 충격부하에 따른 완충효과 (Buffering effects of shock loads in sequencing batch reactor)

  • In this study, we investigated the buffering effect with different COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and TP shock loads on the performance of lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor(SBR) using synthetic wastewater. This study was operated under the following conditions : HRT, 12 hrs : MLSS, 2,000 mg/L : F/M ratio, $0.2kgCOD/kgMLSS{\cdot}d$ : SRT, 20days, and was increased by a factor, COD : ranging from 200-2000 mg/L, $NH_4{^+}-N$ : ranging from 30-300 mg/L, T-P : ranging from 5-50 mg/L in the reactor. As results, COD removal rate at different shock loads was decreased until 42.1%(stable state : 95%) and concentration with effluent was higher than 695 mg/L(at Run 6). In case of $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal rate was decreased until 35.8% from 97.0% and also T-P removal rate was decreased until 5.0%. Effluent concentrations of COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and T-P were rapidly increased according to shock loads and needed 3, 4 and 6 additional cycle times for recovering the stable condition.

  • we performed the underwater explosion analysis for the liquefied oxygen tank - a kind of fuel tank of a mid-size submarine, and tried to verify the structural safety for this structure. First, we reviewed the theory and application of underwater explosion analysis using Structure-Fluid Interaction technique and its finite element modeling scheme. Next, we modeled the explosive and sea water as fluid elements, the LOX tank as structural elements and the interface between two regions as ALE scheme. The effect on shock pressure and impulse of fluid mesh size and shape are also investigated. As the analysis result, the shock pressure due explosion propagated into the water region and hit the structure region. The plastic deformation and the equivalent stress highly appeared at the web frame and the shock mount of LOX structure, but these values were acceptable for design criteria.

PDP 제조 공정시 유리의 열충격 파손 예측 (Prediction of thermal shock failure of glass during PDP manufacturing process)

  • There is an increasing need for large flat panel display devices. PDP (Plasma Display Panel) is one of the most promising candidates for this need. Thermal shock failure of PDP glass during manufacturing process is a critical issue in PDP industry since it is closely related to the product yield and the production speed. In this study, thermal shock resistance of PDP glass is measured by water quenching test and an analysis scheme is described for estimating transient temperature and stress distributions during thermal shock. Based on the experimental data and the analysis results, a simple procedure for predicting the thermal shock failure of PDP glass is proposed. The fast cooling process for heated glass plates can accelerate the speed of PDP production, but often leads to thermal shock failure of the glass plates. Therefore, a design guideline for preventing the failure is presented from a viewpoint of high speed PDP manufacturing process. This design guideline can be used for PDP process design and thermal -shock failure prevention.
