The sprinkler system is a basic fire extinguishing system that uses water as an extinguishing agent. In order to evaluate the fire extinguishing performance of the sprinkler system, information such as the discharge angle, discharge speed, discharge pressure, flow rate, and water droplet size of the installed head are required. However, there is a lack of research on droplets size compared to other requirements. In this study, to evaluate the extinguishing characteristics of sprinkler system, the droplet size distribution was measured for various types of sprinkler heads actually used. The size of the droplet was measured using laser diffraction method. The 50% cumulative volume distribution ($D_{v50}$) according to discharge coefficient(K factor) was $540{\mu}m{\sim}695{\mu}m$ for K50, $542{\mu}m{\sim}1,192{\mu}m$ for K80, $980{\mu}m{\sim}1,223{\mu}m$ for K115 and $1,188{\mu}m{\sim}1,234{\mu}m$ for K202. Based on the measured results, the vaeiance of the droplet particle distribution and the distribution ($D_{v50}$) according to discharge coefficient(K factor) was $540{\mu}m{\sim}695{\mu}m$ for K50, $542{\mu}m{\sim}1,192{\mu}m$ for K80, $980{\mu}m{\sim}1,223{\mu}m$ for K115 and $1,188{\mu}m{\sim}1,234{\mu}m$ for K202. Based on the measured results, the vaeiance of the droplet particle distribution and the Rosin-Rammler index value are presented. As a result of the fire simulation with FDS, it was confirmed that the performance difference occurs according to the water droplet size distribution even when the same amount of water is used. Therefore, the extinguishing performance of the sprinkler system should be evaluated considering the droplet size distribution according to the sprinkler head type.
A micro-water-nozzle, as one of a cooling means of micro-electronic devices, has been proposed and investigated. The I-V characteristics of the micro-water-nozzle and effect of applied voltage on the meniscus formation and deformation and ejection processes of de-ionized water on the micro-water-nozzle tip have been investigated. The water ejection processes, such as a drop formation, a drop deformation, a dripping, a cone jet, and an atomization, were taken place on the micro-water-nozzle tip by the electrohydrodynamic forces acted by the DC and AC high voltages applied on the meniscus of the micro-water-nozzle tip. The I-V characteristics of the micro-water-nozzle-to-plate electrode system were different from that of the same metal-point electrode system, due to the meniscus formation and water droplet ejection at the nozzle tip. The positive and negative DC and AC high voltages showed the water droplets ejection, the ejection rates of 1.8, 1.5 and 1.2 g/h respectively, which, however, showed that the proposed micro-water-nozzle-to-plate electrode system could be used as one of an effective pumping means.
Nanofluids are that metallic or nonmetallic nanometer-sized particles are dispersed in liquid. They can be used in various fields to increase the heat transfer rate because the thermal conductivity of nanofluids can be increased significantly. Nanofluids may be used as a good alternative of coolants in spray cooling. This study conducted experiments to compare the characteristics of sprays between water and nanofluid sprays. The radial distributions of droplet velocities and diameters of water, 0.2% wt.(weight), and 0.5% wt. $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids at the pressure of 0.2 and 0.3 MPa were measured by laser doppler instruments. The radial distributions of droplet diameters and velocities at two axial positions with water and 0.2% wt. nanofluid sprays didn't show much difference. A big difference, however, was observed between 0.5% wt. nanofluid and water sprays. With the increase of the mass of nano-particles, the average droplet diameters were increased and the average droplet velocities were decreased.
The water droplet motion in an air flow microchannel with pores through which water emerges is studied numerically by solving the equations governing the conservation of mass and momentum. The gas-liquid interface is tracked by a level set method which is based on a sharp-interface representation for accurately imposing the matching conditions at the interface and is modified to implement the contact angle conditions on the wall and pores. The numerical results show that the droplet growth and detachment pattern depend significantly on the contact angle and inlet air velocity. Also, the dynamic interaction between the droplets growing on multiple pores is investigated. The pore arrangement subject to droplet merging is found to be not effective for water removal.
The effective water management in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the key strategies for improving cell performance and durability. In this work, an ex situ measurement was carried out to understand the water droplet behavior on the surface of gas diffusion layer (GDL) as a fundamental study for establishing novel water management. For that purpose, simplified cell including one rib and two flow channels was designed and fabricated. Using this ex situ device, the water droplet emergence through the GDL of the PEMFC was emulated to understand liquid water transport through the porous diffusion medium. Through the visualization experiment, the emergence and growth of water droplets at the channel/GDL interface are mainly observed with the surface characteristics of GDL (SGL 10BA, 24BA) and rib when the liquid water passes through the GDL and is expelled to the flow channel. It is expected that the results obtained from this study can contribute to the better understanding on the water droplet behavior (emergence and removal) in the flow channels of PEMFC.
An experiment was conducted to characterize water droplet charging performance of an electrostatic spraying nozzle for an electrostatic wet scrubber. Charge-to-mass ratios, the nozzle currents divided by the mass flow rate of water were obtained with respect to the applied voltage to the ring-electrode for 2 different flow conditions. It was shown that the charge-to-mass ratio increased in proportion to the applied voltage and tended to saturate at a certain higher voltage.
In this study, the mechanisms of binary droplet collision were studied with diesel, ethanol and purified water. The droplet collisions of liquid droplet have been investigated for the same droplet diameter. In order to obtain the digital images of the droplet collision behavior, the experimental equipment was composed of the droplet generating system and the droplet visualization system. The droplets were produced by the vibrating orifice monodisperse generator. The visualization system consisted of a long distance microscope, a light source, and a high speed camera. The outcomes of binary droplet collision can be divided into four regimes, bouncing, coalescence, reflexive separation and stretching separation. The impact angle and the relative velocity of binary droplet are main parameters of collision phenomena, so the transition mechanism of droplet collision can be divided by the impact parameter.
In the present work, surface wetting effect on spread-splash regime and transition criterion of the water and ethanol droplets impacting an unheated dry wall has been experimentally investigated. The droplet was directed on a polished STS plate and a glass slide, and the impinging behavior was visualized and recorded using a CCD camera. Droplet diameter and velocity approaching the wall were measured as well. The critical Sommerfeld number representing the spread-splash boundary for the ethanol droplet impinging on the substrates turned out to be smaller compared to that for the water droplet impinging on the substrates with the surface roughness condition remained unchanged. The shift of the transition boundary is considered to be due to the effect of the surface wettability represented by static contact angle and surface tension of droplet.
In this study, the evaporation characteristics of water or nanofluid droplets on a heated surface was investigated by visualization of the evaporation process and evaluation of the heat transfer coefficient using the droplet temperature measured. The evaporation characteristics was compared between water and nanofluid droplets and the effects of the mass ratio of nanofluid and the inclination of heated surface were analyzed. The heat transfer rate of nanofluid droplet was higher than that of water droplet. The heat transfer coefficient was increased with the increase of the mass ratio of nanofluid. The effect of the inclination of heated surface was much higher than that of fluid type used, which indicates that the inclination of heated surface should be considered as one of influential parameters in the spray cooling process.
Simple and highly efficient droplet merging method is proposed, which enables two nanoliter or picoliter droplets to merge regularly in a straight microchannel. Using a cross channel with inflows of one oil phase through the main channel and two water phases through the side channels, two droplets of different sizes can be generated alternatingly in accordance with flow rate difference of the water phases. It is shown that for a fixed oil phase flow rate, the flow rate of one water phase required for alternating droplet generation increases linearly with the flow rate of another water phase. By this method, the droplets are merged with 100 % efficiency without any additional driving forces.
