  • This paper presents a procedure within the framework of linear potential theory for predicting the lateral drifting forces on a cylinder floating on the free surface of a finite depth water. The disturbance of a regular incident wave caused by the presence of the floating body is represented by the sum of the diffracted and radiated wave potentials, which are determined by using Green's theorem. The lateral drifting forces are calculated by use of momentum theorem, and the scattered waves are expressed in their asymptotic forms. The computed lateral drifting forces on a Lewis form cylinder(b/T=1.25, $\sigma$=0.95) for water depth to draft ratio of 5.0 are compared with the Kyozuka's experimental results for a deep water, and found to be in good agreement. The water depth effects on drifting forces of the same model are also calculated.

  • Marine algal assemblages on the artificial reefs at three stations (Haengwon, Geumneung, Pyoseon in Jeju-do) and the growth pattern of Ecklonia cava with water depth were studied before and after rocky cleaning. Nine algal species occurred at three artificial reefs before rocky cleaning in July 2012, however, 19 algal species were found at three artificial reefs after rocky cleaning in July 2013. In particular, 13 of 19 species in 2013 were replaced by different species which were not found in July 2012. Algal biomass rapidly increased in July 2013 after rocky cleaning. The nMDS plot based on the presence and absence data of macro-algal assemblages on the artificial reefs showed that the species compositions between artificial reefs were similar to each other before rocky cleaning operations in July of 2012. However, after rocky cleaning, the species composition of macro-algal assemblages in Haengwon region was similar to that in Pyoseon region while that in Geumneung region was different to those in Haengwon and Pyseon regions in July 2013. It is needed to clarify the suitable water depth for transplantation of perennial Phaeophyta E. cava. According to the data on seasonal changes in total length, total weight, blade length, blade width, blade weight of E. cava, it began to grow rapidly from April and reached to the maximum value in June, and then degeneration of the blade occurred in July and continued to early August. Although the total length of E. cava at 10m water depth was larger than those at 5 m and 15 m water depths, there was no significant difference statistically among water depths by ANOVA test. However, in the values of total weight, blade length, blade width, and blade weight, the growth patterns at 5 m water depth were larger than those at 10 m and 15 m. Thus, it is assumed that the most suitable water depth for transplantation and its maximum growth and effective release of zoospores of E. cava will be 7~10 m water depth.

  • This paper examines the spatial and temporal variability in the water depth caused by artificial structures in Geum Estuary of South Korea. Water depth data set extracted from marine maps of 1979, 1990, 1996 and 2004 were used in a GIS to derive volumetric estimates of gains and losses of sedimentary material. Artificial structures caused above 2m in water depth to be shallow between 1979 and 2002 in the estuary system, particularly through disturbance of a natural transport in suspended sediment concentrations. The mutt significant change in suspended sediment transport were observed in area affected by embankment for fresh water, inducing the water depth shallower than before in almost 80% of the area. This was probably because of an continuous abundant mud supply from coastal river oven after blocking the fresh water. The spatial analysis made it possible to identify area wide patterns of water depth change subject to many different type of artificial structures, which tanner be acquired by traditional field sampling. It is anticipated thai this research could be used as a valuable reference to confirm the outputs from past field researches for sedimental process in more visual and quantitative manner.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum water intaking depth for water treatment plant based on the changes of phytoplankton distributions in Unmun reservoir. Sampling was carried around of intaking tower near the Dam site at monthly intervals from February to Ocotber in 1998. Total 79 phytoplankton taxa were observed and they were classified into 4 varieties, 75 species within 51 genera. Diatoms were mainly dominated from February to July. However Rhodomonas sp. was a dominant species in August, and Microcystis ichthyblabe in September and October. Cell density of 122,800 cells/mL in October was the highest, and 415 cells/mL in May was the lowest. The pattern of vertical distribution was similar until May; however, the cell density in the epilimnion was much higher than it in the hypolimnion during the periods with the high water temperature over $20^{\circ}C$ since June. The water depths showing over 5,000 cells/mL ranged from the surface to 9m in June, surface to 6m in September, and on the only surface in October. Based on water temperature and phytoplankton vertical distribution, the depth of 6m appeared to be the optimum intaking depth far water treatment plant: 75.4 to 98.0% of phytoplankton cell densities could be avoided and the temperature over $18.3^{\circ}C$ was preserved to prevent cold water damage for rice growth at the water depth during cyanobacterial blooming period in Unmun reservoir.

  • Chemical analysis, measurement of pumping rates of 60 production wells and depth to water tables of 57 monitoring wells were carried to protect depletion of water resources and deterioration of water quality for the commercial portable ground-water. Borehole depth of production well averages 149m(31 boreholes), casing depth is 28m(29 boreholes), production rate is 70 $m^3$/day and depth to water table of monitoring well is 23.26m, respectively. The geology of 60 wells can be divided into Daebo granite(20), Okchun metarmorphic complex(18), Precambrian granitic gneiss(15), Bulguksa granite(4), Cheju volcanics(2), Cretaceous sedimentary rock(1). Average electrical conductivity and pH are 152$\mu$S/cm, and 7.35, respectively. The contents of major cation and anion predominantly $Ca^{2+}$>N $a^{+}$>M $g^{2+}$> $K^{+}$ and HC $O_{3}$$^{-}$ >S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$>Cl ̄>F ̄. Water type is predominantly $Ca^{2+}$-HC $O_{3}$$^{-}$(81.7%). It's possible that water chemistry of some wells were affected not only by the geology of boreholes penetrated but by inflows of surface water or shallow ground-water. Therefore, it is strongly necessary to steadily monitor the water quality and hydrogeologic conditins of production wells.ells.ls.ells.

  • The optimal environmental ranges of the establishment phase for the distribution of Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia was determined to develop a set of basic data and criteria of planting substrate for the restoration, conservation and management of wetlands. The study was carried at 17 wetlands in the Kyunggi-do and Gyeongsangnam-do region where inland wetlands place intensively in June, 2005. Total 127 quadrats were sets in growing areas of Zizania latifolia and Typha angustifolia. $NO_3-N$, K, Ca, Mg and Na in the water variables and soil texture, LOI (loss on ignition), soil pH and soil conductivity in the soil variables were analyzed. The optimal range of water depth for the distribution of Zizania latifolia was -5~39cm, $NO_3-N$ content of water was <0.01~0.19ppm, K content of water was 0.1~5.9ppm, Ca content of water 0.5~44.9ppm, Mg content of water was 1.2~11.9ppm, Na content of water 3.4~29.9ppm, water conductivity was 48~450${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal range of LOI for the distribution of Zizania latifolia was 1.7~11.9%, soil conductivity was 25.5~149.9${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal range of water depth for the distribution of Typha angustifolia was -20~24cm, $NO_3-N$ content of water was <0.01~0.19ppm, K content of water was 0.2~2.9ppm, Ca content of water 0.6~19.9ppm, Mg content of water was 0.2~5.9ppm, Na content of water 3.5~19.9ppm, water conductivity was 96~450${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal range of LOI for the distribution of Typha angustifolia was 2.4~15.9%, soil conductivity was 17.6~149.9${\mu}S$/cm, respectively. The optimal soil texture were loam, silt loam and sandy loam in both species. The lower water depth (-20~40cm) is appropriate to increase biodiversity in both species dominated community and it is better to maintain water depth of 40~100cm for water purification. Both species appear frequently in the soil with high silt content.

  • In this study, the optical depth is analyzed with the effects of droplet size distribution of the water curtain nozzle to attenuate the radiative heat transfer. The HELOS/VARIO equipment is used for the measurement of the droplet size distributions. The spray characteristics are quantified by the investigation of Deirmenjian's modified gamma distribution function. The distribution constant of the nozzle can be obtained as ${\alpha}=1$ and ${\gamma}=5.2$. The generalized equation of the optical depth related with the droplet size distribution is introduced. These results will be applicable to the analysis of the design condition of the water curtain nozzle.

  • This paper represents the experimental investigation of chloride penetration into plain concretes and reinforced concretes. The main objective of this work is to study the main influencing parameters affecting corrosion of steel in concrete. Plain cement concrete and reinforced cement concrete with different water-cement ratios and different cover depth were subjected to ponding test. Ponding of specimens were done for different periods into 10% NaCl solution. Depth of penetration of chloride solution into specimens was measured after ponding. Specimens were crushed and reinforcements were washed using $HNO_3$ solution and weight loss due to corrosion was calculated accordingly. There was a linear relationship between depth of penetration and water-cement ratio. It was also observed that, corrosion of reinforcing steel increases with chloride ponding period and with water-cement ratio. Corrosion of steel in concrete can be minimized by providing good quality concrete and sufficient concrete cover over the reinforcing bars. Water-cement ratio has to be low enough to slow down the penetration of chloride salts into concrete.

  • Herein the motion of a freely-floating sphere in a water of finite depth is analysed within the framework of a linear potential theory. A velocity potential describing fluid motion is generated by distributing pulsating sources and dipoles on the immersed surface of the sphere, without introducing an inner flow model. The potential becomes the solution of an integral equation of Fredholm's second type. In the light of the vertical axisymmetry of the flow, surface integrals reduce to line integrals, which are approximated by summation of the products of the integrand and the length of segments along the contour. Following this computational scheme the diffraction potential and the radiation potential are determined from the same algorithm of solving a set of simultaneous linear equations. Upon knowing values of the potentials hydrodynamic forces such as added mass, hydrodynamic damping and wave exciting forces are evaluated by the integrating pressure over the immersed surface of the sphere. It is found in the case of finite water depth that the hydrodynamic forces are much different from the corresponding ones in deep water. Accordingly motion response of the sphere in a water of finite depth displays a particular behavior both in a amplitude and phase.

  • The effects of foundation scour depth and riverbed condition on the natural frequencies of a typical cross-river integral abutment bridge have been studied. The conventional operational modal analysis technique has been employed in order to extract the modal properties of the bridge and the results have been used in the Finite Element (FE) model updating procedure. Two tests have been carried out in two different levels of water and wet condition of the riverbed. In the first test, the riverbed was in dry condition for two subsequent years and the level of water was 10 meter lower than the natural riverbed. In the second test, the river was opened to water flow from the upstream dam and the level of water was 2 meter higher than the natural riverbed. The results of these two tests have also been used in order to find to what extend the presence of water flow in the river and saturation of the surrounding soil affect the bridge natural frequencies. Finally, the updated FE model of the bridge has been applied in a series of parametric analyses incorporating the effect of piles' relative scour depth on the bridge natural frequency of the first four vibration modes.
