In this study, a model to optimize residual chlorine concentrations in a water supply system was developed using a multi-objective genetic algorithm. Moreover, to quantify the effects of optimized residual chlorine concentration management and to consider customer service requirements, this study developed indices to quantify the spatial and temporal distributions of residual chlorine concentration. Based on the results, the most economical operational method to manage booster chlorination was derived, which would supply water that satisfies the service level required by consumers, as well as the cost-effectiveness and operation requirements relevant to the service providers. A simulation model was then created based on an actual water supply system (i.e., the Multi-regional Water Supply W in Korea). Simulated optimizations were successful, evidencing that it is possible to meet the residual chlorine concentration demanded by consumers at a low cost.
Drainage water in lowland paddy fields is quantitatively influenced recycle and/or repeated irrigation by irrigation facilities, i.e. pumps, check gates, small reservoirs and so on. In those drainage channels, nutrients accumulation and increasing organic matters are considered to be occurred, and water quality would be degraded not only environmental aspect but irrigation purpose. In general, Total Nitrogen (T-N) is interested water quality index in irrigation water, because high nitrogen concentration sometimes caused decreasing rice production by excess growth and fallen or degrading quality of taste, then, farmers would like to clear water less than 1mg/L of T-N concentration. In drainage channel, it is known that the nitrogen concentration change is influenced by physical, chemical and biological properties, i.e, stream or river bed condition, water temperature, other water quality index, and plant cover condition. In this study, discharge data (velocity and level) in a drainage channel was monitored by an Acoustic Doppler system and water quality was sampled at same time in 2011. So those data was analyzed by multi regression model to realize hydrological and environmental factors to influence with nitrogen concentration. The results showed the difference tendency between irrigation and non-irrigation period, and those influenced factors would be considered in water quality model developing in future.
The Four Major Rivers Restoration Project started in 2009 and completed in early 2013 is a large-scale inter-ministry SOC project investing ₩22.2 $10^{12}$ and one of the Project's objectives was to enhance the water-quality grade through recovering the river eco-system and environment. The average concentration and probability distribution of water-quality constituents at given and selected sampling sites are very significant elements for analyzing and controlling the water-quality of rivers or reservoirs effectively. Average concentration can be estimated by point estimator, distribution function of water-quality constituents or Bootstrap method, in which the distribution function estimated with more data in case of insufficient dataset, is applied. Ipo and Gangcheon water-quality monitoring stations in South Han River were selected to compare and analyze the variation of concentration before and after Ipo and Gangcheon Weirs construction, using the whole 4-year's data, from 2005 to 2008 and from 2014 to 2017. Water-quality constituents such as BOD and COD relating to oxygen demanding wastes and TP and Chlorophyll-a relating to the process of nutrient enrichment called eutrophication were also selected. The guidelines for water-quality control and management after weir construction including evaluation of water-quality constituents' variations can be presented by this paper.
Accurate assessment of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations in inland waters using remote sensing is challenging due to the optical complexity of case 2 waters. and the inherent optical properties (IOPs) of natural waters are the most significant factors affecting light propagation within water columns, and thus play indispensable roles on estimation of Chl-a concentrations. Despite its importance, no IOPs retrieval model was specifically developed for inland water bodies, although significant efforts were made on oceanic inversion models. So we have applied and validated a recently developed Red-NIR three-band model and an IOPs Inversion Model for estimating Chl-a concentration and deriving inland water IOPs in Lake Uiam. Three band and IOPs based Chl-a estimation model accuracy was assessed with samples collected in different seasons. The results indicate that this models can be used to accurately retrieve Chl-a concentration and absorption coefficients. For all datasets the determination coefficients of the 3-band models versus Chl-a concentration ranged 0.65 and 0.88 and IOPs based model versus Chl-a concentration varied from 0.73 to 0.83 respectively. and Comparison between 3-band and IOPs based models showed significant performance with decrease of root mean square error from 18% to 33.6%. The results of this study provides the potential of effective methods for remote monitoring and water quality management in turbid inland water bodies using hyper-spectral remote sensing.
Inorganic ions and water are major components of ambient fine particles. Water content in fine particles is mainly determined by ambient meteorological conditions and the concentrations of hygroscopic species such as inorganic ions. Thus, to reduce fine particle mass concentration, it is important to accurately estimate the relationship between water content and the concentration of ions in fine particles. Water content in fine particles in Seoul are estimated by using a gas/particle equilibrium model to understand the characteristics of fine particle mass concentration. In addition, sensitivity of fine particle mass concentration to the changes of particulate ionic species (sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) is estimated. It was found that water content in Seoul is mostly determined by the concentrations of the hygroscopic ionic species, especially, sulfate and ammonium, and ambient relative humidity.
Tall fescue (Schedonorus phoenix Scop.) is resistant to abiotic and biotic stresses through a symbiotic relationship with Neotyphodium coenophialum. However, this endophyte has been considered detrimental since it produces toxic alkaloids to animals. It is vital to understand mutuality between these two to maximize positive impact of the endophyte on agri-ecosystem. Little research has been conducted on endophyte transmission mechanism in planta. To provide basic information related to endophyte transmission, an experiment was conducted to examine the effect of endophyte genotype and water stress on endophyte transmission by imposing soil moisture deficits at different stages of panicle development. There was water stress effect on endophyte frequency but not on concentration, whereas endophyte genotype significantly influenced endophyte concentration in pseudostem of tall fescue at boot stage. Reproductive tillers showed greater endophyte frequency and concentration. Endophyte frequency in florets or seeds depended on position within panicle. There was no drought effect on endophyte concentration, but showed the effect of endophyte genotype on endophyte concentration in florets and seeds. Overall endophyte concentration in seeds was higher. From this study, we may conclude that although water stress reduced endophyte frequency in vegetative tiller, water stress does not have effect on endophyte transmission, suggesting that drought is not an important factor controlling the endophyte transmission from plant to seed. Endophyte genotype and seed position in a panicle affected endophyte transmission, indicating that these two factors are involved in endophyte transmission and may determine seed transmission of endophyte in tall fescue.
Surface oxides and intergranular (IG) oxidation phenomena in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration were characterized to obtain clear insight into the primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) behavior upon exposure to pressurized water reactor primary water. When hydrogen concentration was between 5 and 30 cm3 H2/kg H2O, NiFe2O4 and NiO type oxides were found on the surface. NiO type oxides were found inside the oxidized grain boundary when hydrogen concentration was 5 cm3 H2/kg H2O. However, only NiFe2O4 spinel on the surface and Ni enrichment were observed when hydrogen concentration was 30 cm3 H2/kg H2O. These results indicate that the oxidation/reduction reaction of Ni in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration can considerably affect surface oxidation behavior. It appears that the formation of NiO type oxides in a Ni oxidation state and Ni enrichment in a Ni reduction (or metallic) state are common in primary water. It is believed that the above different oxidation/reduction reactions of Ni in Alloy 600 depending on hydrogen concentration can also significantly affect the resistance to PWSCC of Alloy 600.
26 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were investigated, to determine the characteristics of manganese (Mn) concentration and removal in Korea. Mn concentrations of raw water in most WTPs were higher than the drinking water standard (i.e., 0.05 mg/L); thus, proper removal of Mn at the WTPs is needed. Mn concentration was generally higher in lakes than rivers due to seasonal lake turnovers. The Mn concentrations of treated water at 26 WTPs in 2012 were less than 0.05 mg/L, due to strict law enforcement and water treatment processes optimization. However, before 2010, those concentrations were more than 0.05 mg/L, which could have led to an accumulation of Mn oxides in the distribution system. This could be one of the main reasons for black water occurrence. Therefore, regular monitoring of Mn concentration in the distribution system, flushing, and proper Mn removal at WTPs are needed, to supply clean and palatable tap water.
Fluoridation of drinking water to a level of about 0.8mg/l (below 1.5mg/l) for reducing the incidence of tooth decay is recommended. However, concerns about potential problems of unknown effects and overdosing hinders the fluoridation. This study describes the work performed to obtain information on the behavior of fluoride under various conditions in the process of water fluoridation. Effects of water treatment chemicals, water treatment unit, and water distribution on water fluoridation were investigated at both lab and an actual water treatment plant. Residual fluoride concentration was not affected by lime and chlorine dosage up to 20mg/l. Flocculation with PAC slightly decreased the residual fluoride concentration as PAC dosage increased. Average fluoride concentration of 0.87mg/l at an intake basin was decreased to 0.83mg/l by sedimentation, 0.81mg/l by dual media(sand+anthracite) filtration, and 0.79mg/l by granular activated carbon filtration in the water treatment plant.
The fluoride work management of water supply conveyance has been recommending by the WHO to prevent of tooth decay. Fluoridation of public water supplies has been practiced since 1945. The present approximately 67 countries reported community water fluoridation benefiting many cities. At our country, Fluoridation began in 1981 in Chongiu and Jinhea. In 2002, approximately 40 cities have large populations consuming fluoridated water. But Chongiu stopped fluoridation water works. Few public health measures have been accorded greater clinical and laboratory research, epidemiological study, clinical trials, and public attention than has water fluoridation. In this study, chemical analysis of Sodium Silicofluoride and Fluoride Feed Equipment analyzed. And this study proposed to Fluoride concentration experimental (lab. and field exp.), economics analysis, prevention effect. This study can be decided on the concentration of fluoride injection in Water Fluoridation. Hereafter, this study will be useful in safety and economics of Water Fluoridation in the future.
