  • This study aims to suggest wastewater treatment options for diaper recycling by identifying characteristic analysis of wastewater from diaper recycling process and efficiency evaluation of wastewater treatment units. The wastewater characteristic analysis showed that the concentration of organic pollutants and ionic materials were very high comparing to seawater. Through the investigation of similar wastewater treatment, six treatment units were identified to reduce pollutants. It is found UF(ultra-filtration), DAF(dissolved air flotation), fenton oxidation, electro-coagulation and chemical-coagulation are effective in reducing organic pollutants while membrane system and ion exchanger are effective in reducing ionic materials. Even though the target of water quality should be secured in terms of managing organic pollutants level, the application of treatment unit for reducing ionic material needs lots of considerations. This result suggests that reuse of pulping wastewater after controlling organic pollutants is better than direct discharge of pulping wastewater. To select the appropriate wastewater treatment unit, an economic analysis about operation condition, wastewater flow, cost, efficiency should be considered.

  • This study introduced wastewater treatment method by High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS). HGMS treatment was high efficient method for various industrial wastewaters. The system is currently research state, but we have surveyed commercialize the technology for industry. In rolling plate process, coolant wastewater was recycled by sedimentation and sand filter system. It needs several large reservoirs and long time to remove suspended solid (SS) like metal fines and iron oxide in hot rolling plate making process. If removing rate of suspended solid in rolling coolant wastewater is improved by using HGMS system, the productivity of working process can be increased and the area of reservoir can be reduced. We manufactured high temperature superconducting HGMS system that had a purpose to treatment of coolant wastewater in rolling plate process. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel 430 mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system, In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS system, it has been clear that the fine paramagnetic particles in the coolant wastewater obtained from rolling plate process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.

  • Constructed wetland system which can be applied to the rural wastewater treatment system was examined by pilot plant in Kon-Kuk University. Hydraulic loading rate of wastewater was about 0.16m$^3$/m$^2$. day and theoretical detention time in the system was 1.38 days. The effluent of the septic tank for the school building was applied as inflow to the system. The influent concentration of DO was zero but effluent was up to 4.37mg/${\ell}$ which implies that oxygen was supplied enough from atmosphere by reaeration to support biological activity of the system. Average influent concentration of BOD was 104mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 24mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 76%. Average influent concentration of COD was 215mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 63mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 70 % . Average influent concentration of SS was 78mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 10mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Two components, BOD and SS, are regulated by law to keep maximum water quality standard of 80mg/${\ell}$ when daily outflow rate is less than 100$m^3$/day which is the case of most rural communities. Therefore, the results from the experiment showed that constructed wetland system can meet the water quality standard easily. Average influent concentration of total nitrogen was 165mg/lwhich is relatively higher than normal wastewater, and effluent was about 156mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of only 6%. Average influent concentration of total phosphorus was 41 mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 6mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Overall, constructed wetland system was thought to be effective to treat wastewater if nitrogen removal mechanism is improved. Considering low cost, less maintenance, and high treatability, this system can be a practical alternative for the wastewater treatment in rural area The experiment was performed during the summer and fall season, and treatment efficiency of the system is expected to decrease in low temperature. therefore, further study including temperature is required to evaluate feasibility of the system more in detail.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate applicability of pretreatment on the existing biological treatment for domestic wastewater reclamation. From Jar Tests, it was found that optimum dosage of coagulant was PAC 0.5mg/L and $FeCl_3$ 180mg/L for urban sewage. In this study, PAC 0.5mg/L was selected considering sludge production and the amount of coagulant required. In a continuous experiment performed with combining chemical coagulation and biological treatment, a considerable removal efficency was obtained in term of BOD, SS, T-N, T-P and ABS. When the raw sewage was supplied into the pre-chamical treatment facility, the removal of BOD and SS was 48.3% and 81.1%. However T-N removal was very low which means T-N consists of $NH_3-N$ mostly. T-P was almost completely recluced by the chemical addition. The effluent BOD & SS was 57~76 and 21~43mg/L, which could reduce the size of biological treatment facility. From the cost estimation pre-chemical treatment could save around half of the area required for biological treatment with post ceagulation.

  • In this study, we applied ENERWATER to evaluate the energy consumption labeling of wastewater treatment plants in Korea using the Korea sewerage statistics data. The results showed that the energy label status was excellent in the SBR process for small and medium-scale wastewater treatment plants and the A2O process for large-scale wastewater treatment plants. The energy labeling of wastewater treatment plants of 50,000 tons capacity was excellent. The statuses of metropolitan cities and Jeollanam-do province were excellent. We analyzed the effects of renewable energy on wastewater treatment plants' energy consumption and found out that digestion gas for large-scale plants and photovoltaic energy for small-scale plants were effective in improving energy labeling. In addition, we compared the energy labels of four wastewater treatment plants in "Z" city and wastewater treatment plant "X" had the best energy label, and the wastewater treatment plants "V" and "Y" had to be selected as priorities for the energy diagnosis and improvement project. In a comprehensive conclusion, the applicability of ENERWATER was confirmed based on sewage statistics data and labeling can be used to set priorities for the energy diagnosis and improvement project.

  • An eco-friendly water purifier was developed using natural minerals, plants, and sludge from water purification plants. A wastewater complex treatment system using this water purification agent was developed. The wastewater complex treatment system goes through the process of inflow of contaminated water, input of water purification agent, operation of a pressurized flotation device, sludge flotation, sludge collection and treatment water discharge. This device was applied to the removal of green algae in livestock desorption liquid, broiler washing water, factory wastewater, sewage treatment plant and pond to obtain excellent removal rate. The use of natural water purification agents for organic waste purification has not been investigated.

  • Sewerage supply in rural community is the important for water quality protection of water system such as river, lake and wetland. And characteristic of small scale wastewater system that have wide range of inflow and concentration in sewage should be considered for stable operation of small scale wastewater treatment plant. In this research, characteristics of flow ratio (flow / designed flow), effect on treatment efficiency of small scale wastewater treatment plant and assessment of optimal flow ratio were conducted through analysis on operation result of 18 small scale wastewater treatment plant in Bong-hwa gun. As a result, flow ratio shows the higher value during summer. However pollutants concentration in sewage was shown the higher concentration during autumn and winter. Treatment of small scale wastewater treatment plant is increased when flow ratio increased, and nutrient treatment efficiency is more sensitive to change of flow ratio than organic compound and suspended solids. According to this research result, it need to be maintained flow ratio 0.8 over value for stable treatment efficiency of small scale wastewater treatment plant.

  • Advanced control is getting increasingly demanded in water and wastewater treatment systems. Various case studies have shown significant savings in operating costs, including energy costs, and remarkably short payback times. It has been demonstrated that instrumentation, control and automation (ICA) may increase the capacity of biological nutrient removing wastewater treatment plants by 10-30% today. With further understanding and exploitation of the mechanisms involved in biological nutrient removal the improvements due to ICA may reach another 20-50% of the total system investments within the next 10-20 years. Disturbances are the reason for control of any system. In a wastewater treatment system they are mostly related to the load variations, but many disturbances are created also within the plant. In water supply systems some of the major disturbances are related the customer demand as well as to leakages or bursts in the pipelines or the distribution networks. Hardly any system operates in steady state but is more or less in a transient state all the time. Water and energy are closely related. The role of energy in water and wastewater operations is discussed. With increasing energy costs and the threatening climate changes this issue will grow in importance.

  • In this study, a wastewater treatment system for hypersaline wastewater utilizing the Hypersaline Wastewater Treatment Community (HWTC) has been developed. The hypersaline wastewater treatment efficiency and microbial community of the HWTC were investigated. The average removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand were 84% in an HRT of 2.5 days. Microbial community analysis, by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments and 16S rRNA gene clone library, revealed community diversity. The 16S rRNA gene analysis of dominant microbial bacteria in 4% hypersaline wastewater confirmed the presence of Halomonas sp. and Paenibacillus sp. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the taxonomic affiliation of the dominant species in the HWTC was ${\gamma}$-proteobacteria and firmicutes. These results indicate the possibility that an appropriate hypersaline wastewater treatment system can be designed using acclimated sludge with a halophilic community.
