  • Mushroom waste medium refers to the waste biomass generated after mushroom cultivating. And, the burden of treatment on mushroom farmhouse is increasing due to the absence of appropriate treatment method and increase of treatment costs of the mushroom waste medium. In this study, in order to assess the energy value of mushroom waste medium by an anaerobic digestion, methane potential and anaerobic organic matter decomposition characteristics were investigated. The theoretical methane potential(Bth) of mushroom medium(MM) was 0.481 Nm3-CH4/kg-VSadded, and the Bth of mushroom waste medium(MWM) was 0.451 Nm3-CH4/kg-VSadded. The biochemical methane potential(Bu-exp) of MWM was increased by 18% from 0.155 for MM to 0.183 Nm3-CH4/kg-VSadded for MWM. In the reaction kinetics analysis by the Modified Gompertz model, the maximum methane production rate(Rm) was increased from 4.59 for MM to 7.21 mL/day for MWM and the lag growth phase time(λ) was decreased from 2.78 for MM to 1.96 days for MWM. In the reaction kinetics analysis by the parallel first order kinetics model, the easily degradable organic matter(VSe) content was increased by 5.89% and the persistently degradable organic matter(VSp) content was 2.03% in MWM, and the non-degradable organic matter(VSNB) content was decreased by 7.85%. Therefore, it was evaluated that the anaerobic digestion efficiency of MWM was increased. The anaerobic digestion efficiency of MWM was assessed to be more improved than that of MM.

  • Researches were carried out to find the optimal conditions of carbon sources, nitrogen sources and pH for the maximum production of sporophore of Lentinus edodes. Dextrin, aspartic acid and pH 4.0 were the best conditions for yield of sporophore by using replacement culture technique. The production of sporophore was stimulated by addition of 0.8% triacylglycerol in NS medium. Coffee waste was chosen for the best substrate among the poplar, oak, white aspen saw dust and coffee waste. Increased growth of mycelim and yield of sporophore was obsewed by adding tannin up to 0.1% as substrate.

  • Results for application of RDF(Refuse Derived Fuel) to selected wastes in metropolitan and small and medium cities are as follows. The physical characteristics of waste are paper, plastic, food waste, and so on. The proximate analysis in P city showed 20.2% of moisture, 71% of combustible material, and 8.8% of ash on annual average. That in G city showed 31.6% of moisture, 59.5% of combustible material, and 8.9% of ash. Ultimate analysis in P city showed 52.04% of carbon, 7.02% of hydrogen, 28.80% of oxygen, 0.66% of nitrogen, and 0.09% of sulfur. Heating value was 3,363 kcal/kg. Ultimate analysis in G city showed 50.85% of carbon, 6.56% of hydrogen, 29.86% of oxygen, 0.79% of nitrogen, and 0.12% of sulfur. Heating value in the G city was somewhat lower than that in the P city with 2,632 kcal/kg. Thus, application of RDF in metropolitan city was more effective than that in small and medium cities. Heating value in mixture for the P city was lower than that in waste of the volume rate waste charge system alone by 143 kcal/kg. In proximate analysis, moisture, and combustible material were likely to be more adequate to RDF.

  • The measured radioactivity of gamma-emitting radionuclides in each radioactive waste drum using the non-destructive waste assay method is underestimated than real radioactivity in radioactive waste drum because the gamma-rays are attenuated within the medium. Therefore, the measured radioactivity should be corrected for the attenuation of gamma-rays. For the correction of the attenuation of gamma-rays, the attenuation correction method should be applied differently by considering the distribution and density of medium in radioactive wastes drum generated from nuclear power plants. In this study, the model drums were fabricated for simulating five types of radioactive waste drums generated from nuclear power plant and the optimum methods of the attenuation correction were experimentally determined to analyze the activity of radionuclides in the waste drum accurately using the segmented gamma scanning system. With the determination of the attenuation correction methods from the experimental results the transmission method and the average density method for the miscellaneous waste drum, the transmission method and the differential peak absorption method for the shielded miscellaneous waste drum were used to measure the density of medium in waste drums. Also, the average density method and the differential peak absorption method for the spent resin drum, the paraffin solidified drum, and the spent filter drum were used.

  • The waste-water from the industry for production of a soybean curd (the soybean curd waste-water) was investigated to use for the substrate to produce the endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-1 used as one of well known microbial pesticides. The pH of the soybean curd waste-water was 9.8 and its chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and phosphate (TP) were 276.0, 71.1 and 5.5mg/$\ell$, respectively. The higher was the concentration of the soybean curd waste-water in the medium, the more endotoxin was produced. Maximal sporulation occurred at which concentration of $K_2$HPO$_4$in the medium supplied with the soybean curd waste-water was 1% (w/v). Production of the endotoxin with the optimized medium supplied with the soybean curd waste-water was 1.5 times higher than that without the soybean curd waste-water. The soybean curd waste-water was found to be suitable substrate for production of the endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-1.

  • The effects of the composition of a mixture containing food waste compost (FWC), rice bran (RB), and oak sawdust (SD) on the antler-type fruiting body (FB) yield of Ganoderma lucidum were studied. Experiments were performed using 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40% (w/w) FWC added to a basal growth medium consisting of 20% (w/w) RB and 80% (w/w) SD. The content of 15% FWC gave the highest FB yield ($27.0{\pm}1.3$ g/bottle), which was 44% higher than the yield ($18.6{\pm}2.8$ g/bottle) of the control treatment. However, FWC contents of 20~40% showed reduced yield (2.4~23.0 g/bottle), partly because FWC had a high Na concentration (0.6%). These results demonstrate the potential for use of FWC as a component of a growth medium for production of G. lucidum FBs.

  • A blast furnace slag(BFS) has been used as a filter medium for the treatment of domestic waste waters during the period of 9-month. More than 90% of phosphorus was removed while the hardness of the treated water increased by 5 times and the pH was significantly raised from 6.8 to 10.8. The high hardness and pH of the treated water indicated dissolution of BSF by the sewage. The experimental results suggest that BFS could be utilized for the removal of phosphorus in the waste water treatment plant using aquatic plants and gravels.

  • The recycled aggregates produced from waste concrete by crushing and granularity adjusting processes only can't be used for structural aggregates because they display low density and high abrasion rate by including lots of mortar and cement paste. However, the recycled aggregates include a lot of aggregates for concrete. Using the heavy medium separation method that is one of the specific gravity separation methods, about 45% of the waste concrete could be converted to the recycled aggregates.

  • For the accurate safety assessment of potential radioactive waste disposal site which is located in the crystalline rock it is important to simulate the mass transportation through engineered and natural barrier system precisely, characterized by porous and fractured media respectively. In this work the methods to construct discrete fracture network for the analysis of flow and mass transport through fractured-porous medium are described. The probability density function is adopted in generating fracture properties for the realistic representation of real fractured rock. In order to investigate the intersection between a porous and a fractured medium described by a 2 dimensional rectangular and a cuboid grid respectively, an additional imaginary fracture is adopted at the face of a porous medium intersected by a fracture. In order to construct large scale flow paths an effective method to find interconnected fractures and algorithms of swift detecting connectivities between fractures or porous medium and fractures are proposed. These methods are expected to contribute to the development of numerical program for the simulation of radioactive nuclide transport through fractured-porous medium from radioactive waste disposal site.
