  • As a part of basic investigation for utilization of canned food processing by-products, a food components of the canned oyster processing waste water such as boiled and released water(BRW), wash water(WW) were investigated and compared with hot-water extracts from oyster. From the results of measuring heavy metal conte수, viable cells and coliform group, the canned oyster processing waste waters might not invoke health risk in using food resource. The contents of taste compounds (free amino acids, ATP related compounds, TMA (O) and total creatinine) of BRW and WW accounted for about 254% and 95%, respectively, in comparison with those of control (hot-water extract from oyster). The BRW showed a very high content of salt in comparing to the WW and control. In descending order, the values of whiteness index was WW, control and BRW. Sensory scores for color, oyster flavor intensity and saline taste were not significantly different between WW and control. But, BRW had the highest score in oyster flavor intensity, while had the lowest score in color and saline taste. But, the color and saline taste of BRW might be able to control by some pretreatment (concentration and drying in mild condition, desalination and recipe control etc). These results indicated that BRW and WW generated from various step during canned oyster processing could be a potential food resource by controlling of saline taste and color intensity.

  • In this study, purified peptides from shrimp waste hydrolysates (SWHs) were examined for their inhibitory effects against ${\beta}$-secretase. During consecutive purification using a Sephadex G-25 column chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography on a C18 column, a potent ${\beta}$-secretase inhibitory peptide Asp-Val-Leu-Phe-His (629 Da) was isolated and identified from SWH24 by Q-TOF MS/MS and the $IC_{50}$ value was determined to be $92.70{\mu}M$. The ${\beta}$-secretase inhibition patterns of the purified peptides were found to be competitive. Among synthesized ${\beta}$-secretase inhibitory peptides, Leu-Phe-His had higher ${\beta}$-secretase inhibitory activity than the others. The result of this study suggests that the ${\beta}$-secretase inhibitory peptide derived from SWH24 could be potential candidates to develop nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals.

  • A particle flow visualization, electrostatic charging measurement and separation of triboelectrically charged particles in the external electric field by a fluidized bed tribocharger are conducted for the removal of PVC particles from mixed waste plastics. The laboratory-scale triboelectrostatic separation system consists of the fluidized bed tribocharger, a separation chamber, a collection chamber and a controller. PVC and PET particles can be imparted negative and positive surface charges respectively due to the difference of triboelectric charging series between particles and particles in the fluidized bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. To visualize these charged particles, He-Ne laser is used with cylindrical lenses to generate a sheet beam. In the charging measurement, the particle motion analysis system (PMAS), capable of determining particle velocity and diameter. is used to non-intrusively measure particle behavior in high strength electric field. The average charge-to-mass ratios of PVC and PET particles are $1.4\;and\;1.2{\mu}C/kg$, respectively. The highly concentrated PVC (91.9%) can be recovered with a yield of about 96.1% from the mixture of PVC and PET materials for a single-stage processing. The triboelectrostatic separation system using the fluidized tribocharger shows the potential to be an effective method for removing PVC from mixed plastics for waste plastic recycling.

  • Recently due to dramatically increasing demand of liquid crystal display (LCD) panel in IT industry, the used LCD panel glass has been wasted from electronic items, and also panel glass of poor quality during manufacturing process. The wasted LCD panel glass was crushed in the range of 0.42 to 2mm and evaluated for its usefulness as a aggregate in production of cement concrete brick. Cement concrete specimens with various mixing ratios of weathered granite soil, LCD panel glass and cement were cured in wetness for 7 days at $40^{\circ}C$ and then tested for uniaxial comprehensive strength (UCS)(KS F 4004 method). Specimen with a mixing ratio, 1:6:3, of weathered granite, LCD panel glass and cement, respectively, showed the highest average in the UCS test($26.51N/mm^2$). It is much higher than that of commercial brick without glass($17.00N/mm^2$). Conclusively waste LCD panel glass can be reutilized economically as a raw building material of good quality.

  • Lipid-extracted algae (LEA) cell residue is generated as an organic solid waste in the process of biodiesel production from microalgae, and its recycling or reuse is important in the aspect of waste minimization. In this study, the influence of the addition of LEA hydrolysate to Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) cultivation on cell growth and biodiesel production was investigated to seek a possible use of LEA as a carbon source. LEA was hydrolyzed by three different methods: acid hydrolysis, autoclave, and ultra-sonication. The resulting hydrolysates were supplemented with three background media: formulated defined medium (BG-11), organic liquid fertilizer (PAL1), and distilled water. Both cell growth and lipid production of C. vulgaris were improved under mixotrophic cultivation. By supplementing hydrolysates, biomass productivity was increased several folds because the LEA hydrolysates contained monosaccharides such as glucose and galactose. Lipid contents and biodiesel productivity were bestly increased in PAL1 medium supplemented with ultrasonication (UL) hydrolysate, from 11 to 25% after 14 days, while nitrate concentration was quickly reduced from 55 to below 10 mg/L. The suggested recycling option of the LEA to microalgae cultivation was helpful to improve biodiesel productivity as well as to reduce organic waste generation.

  • Treating methods and characteristics of waste from a nuclear fuel powder conversion plant were studied. To recovery or treat a trace uranium in liquid waste, the ammonium uranyl carbonate(AUC) filtrate must be heated for $CO_2$ expelling, essentially. Uranium content of final treated waste solution from fuel powder processes for a heavy water reactor(HWR) could be lowered to 1 ppm by the lime treatment after the ammonium di-uranate(ADU) precipitation by simple heating. Otherwise, in case of the waste from fuel powder processes for a pressurized light water reactor(PWR), it is result in 0.8 ppm as a form of uranium peroxide such as $UO_4{\cdot}2NH_4F$ compounds. Optimum condition was found at $101^{\circ}C$ by the simple heating method in case of HWR powder process waste. And in case of PWR powder process waste, optimum condition could be obtained by precipitating with adding hydrogen peroxide and adjusting at pH 9.5 with ammonia gas at $60^{\circ}C$ after heating the waste In order to expelling $CO_2$. As the characteristics of recovered uranium compounds, median particle size of ADU was increased with pH increasing in case of HWP waste. Also, in case of uranium proxide compound recovered from PWR waste, the property of $U_3O_8$ power obtained after thermal treatment in air atmosphere was similar to that of the powder prepared from AUC conversion plant.

  • Various waste PCBs arose during disassembly of LCD TVs and monitors in which they originally functioned for transmission of imaging signal, power supply, and imaging control. In those functional PCBs, gold and copper are contained at far more acceptable level, exceeding mining grade ores. Those valuable metals and their contents widely vary with functionality and end use of PCBs. Therefore, compositional analysis of individual waste PCBs from disassembled LCD TVs and monitors were performed in the present study to classify them into three categories: high gold yield and low gold yield PCBs and those without gold contents. Besides, additional chemical analysis was made to reveal gold and copper contents in the waste PCBs arising from actual disassembly/separation of end-of-life LCD TVs and monitors.

  • Modern waste management units, so-called "landfills" protect human health and environment from hazardous leachate and gas. Accordingly, it must be constructed with a bottom liner system that includes a gas collection layer. Leachate is the contaminated liquid that drains from the waste material pollutes ground water. For this reason. bottom liner system must have durability and low hydraulic conductivity (in case of compacted clay liner, no more than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ ). P county in Kangwon province constructed a solid waste landfill with bottom liner system. In this study. it is mainly introduced that the test results on construction and quality control of bottom liner system by "Multiple composite liner construction technology", which is selected for bottom liner system in P solid waste landfill.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of waste foundry sand (WFS) and the asphalt mixture made of a foundry waste sand. To estimate the applicability of WFS, chemical and physical properties were measured by XRF(X-ray fluorescent), and SEM(Scanning electronic microfilm). To improve the stripping resistance of WFS asphalt mixture, anti-stripping agents (a hydrated lime and a liquid anti-stripping agent) were used. To improve tensile properties and durability of WFS asphalt concrete mixture, LDPE(low-density polyethylene) was used as an asphalt modifier Marshall mix design, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio(TSR) after freezing and thawing, moisture susceptibility and wheel tracking tests were carried out to evaluate performance of WFS asphalt concrete. Comparing with conventional asphalt concrete, WFS asphalt concretes showed similar or the better qualify in mechanical properties, and satisfied all specification limits. Therefore, it Is concluded that waste foundry sand can be recycled as an asphalt pavement material.
